A more extensive London walk around Covent Garden looking at the history, vice and how it almost got destroyed to make way for a motorway. The Covent Garden Trust ensure that this will never happen again and asked me to talk about all the great buildings in Covent Garden and the debauched, fascinating, important, historical events it has seen down the years.
There's the British Communist Party, Winnie the Pooh, The Queen's toilet and plenty of prostitution.
A trip to the London Transport Museum, Samuel Pepys, The King and his mistress, Casanova and Oscar Wilde and the invention of the police force.
Of course Covent Garden wouldn't be the same with the entertainers.

I love Covent Garden and when my eldest daughter grew up she said she would buy me a pint... So not one to refuse such an offer I took her to the Punch and Judy where she duely keep her promise but declaring that this must be the most expensive pint in the whole of London. I think not but she hasn't bought one since! Great walk - loved the Opera House armourer!

What's it like having such an amazing camera guy? Our local musician who also saved the historical town of Jerome is Maynard James Keenan. The other day on Facebook, people confused Maynard with Marilyn Manson. Maynard didn't need the whole town to explain how much, we love and respect him to these folks. But, the town felt that was the treatment, he deserved. This weekend there is a gigantic and loud American Biker festival in 'Old Town.' I walking around the biker festival, strengthing out my new boots in a long green cotton summer dress. When a man from Canada stopped me and said, "You are not one of them ?!!?" I said, "How could you tell?" He replied, "Because you are not wearing a costume." I said, "That is the most accurate description of my life, I've ever heard....thank you." He then asked me to a hippie spiritual drum circle, I declined due to the fact, that I don't wear costumes. ---- I would love for you and your trusty cameraman to visit me in Jerome. But, I'm afraid, I will not be wearing a costume. ___ I hope you had a wonderful vacation. Glad you are back.

06:45 I loved The Sweeney, but for me John Thaw’s portrayal of Inspector Morse will forever be his most iconic, not only for the gravitas he brought to the role, but also capturing perfectly the eternal struggle of holding on to our pasts against the endless tidal waves of an uncertain future. I don’t know if you get the chance to read these comments Jules, but it would be nice if you could stray further afield and give us a guide to Oxford one day.

I had a summer job there as a road sweeper just before the market moved. Fantastic atmosphere. Michael Crawford (some mothers…..) used to come round to chat with his friends in the flower market. The sweepers used to dump the waste in front of what is now the transport museum. Three times a day a bin lorry would come round and myself and another guy would shovel it into the crusher. Most of the day we were free to pick up odd jobs. I learned the phrase “ There’s a drink in it for you”. Our canteen was in the basement of the building across the alley from what is now the museum. In the other part of the basement was a recording studio. Glam rockers Sweet were there. Nice guys. Then Breton folk band with Alain Stevel. Aloof and arrogant. The film Frenzy, as you wrote, captured perfectly the atmosphere of the market in those days.

Many a pints and ciderrrrs were had at The Lamb and Flag when my cousin had a tapestries shop in the main market level indoors during the late 80's. Before the new building was built (1999 ) I couldn't understand why she got up and moved to Milton Keynes? Ugh!

I spent Jan 1973 in London on Independent Study at college, and had the time of my life. Jan 11 saw Fonteyn & Nureyev in "Swan Lake" which I will never forget. Jan 18 saw "Madame Butterfly" which was one good song done to death. Was rooting for a quick suicide by the end. Both were in Covent Garden. The Lamb & Flag was intensely crowded. Chelsea Drugstore (now defunct) was... while I was there, a cute thin girl danced topless to "Nights in White Satin", which gave the tune new meaning for me. Many many other pubs & plays, including Olivier, Rigg, and the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company (now defunct).

Michael Melen - you must write more of your memories and impressions - When was it you saw Fonteyn & Nureyev? I saw Michael Flanders & Donald Swann in 'The Drop of a Hat' in 1956 - or there-abouts - met Donald Swann about twenty five years ago when I recorded him and asked him to sing some of his early songs for me - which he did. Recorded on a 10 1/2" reel - to - reel. Ha-Ha-Ho!

@@michaelgamble296 Jan 1973. I was happy just with the music. I knew nothing about ballet at the time. Now I know only a little. But each came in alone and danced, and they were pretty good, I felt. When they were both onstage together, you could feel how they felt about each other. It was palpable. I had never encountered that before. They wrapped the audience up in their emotions. It was stunning. Now, the performance of Merchant of Venice at the Old Vic starring Diana Rigg... sorry, Dame Rigg!

Awesome. Used to work here in the late 90s. Love the place. Especially getting to watch the orchestra and Ballerina practicing at the Royal Opera House - only about 10 of us in the audience. Not good for skateboarding though, haha.

A trick has been missed with the floral hall. It would make a wonderful Winter Garden or Palm Court.
