Farming with Carp

Looking at a few of our fields to see how the growth is coming along!
Welcome to Farming With Carp. This channel will show you the jobs that we do on our farm in Indiana each day. We are a regenerative organic farm that capitalizes on the uses of cover crops. We raise corn, soybeans, wheat, peas and alfalfa. We also have a growing herd of livestock on the farm that we graze across our acres. Come along for the ride!

Carp, Have you guys ever thought about flaming the alfalfa? They supposedly use it to desiccate potato plants. It may be a wild way to terminate a cover crop and about as dangerous as the zapper but in theory it sounds good. It appears the flame is burnt under the canopy to trap the heat and kill any small weeds. Its something to think about. I wish you the best of luck this growing season

Thanks for the support! It is definitely something to think about. I wonder if the flame would actually kill it. Need to do a test trial

I don’t see a bad start there quite frankly Eric. The only concern I can see is getting that alfalfa back after it’s gone through the dairy cows. Too bad you can’t get them to bring out everything that’s not making milk for direct grazing. That would give them another food label on top of organic, adding value to their product.

Just curious what you will be trying different this year planting corn into the alfalfa?

The corn seems to be slow to grow up through the alfalfa, so we have a couple products we want to use to get the corn a jump start. Also the timing of when we plant the corn, might try and plant earlier to get ahead of alfalfa growth. Weather permitting of course

Nice video. Do you plant any big warm seasno cover crop mixes behind your wheat?

Have you ever considered weed zapping the alfalfa? I believe the original guys who created the zapper tried that and it worked. I’m curious to see you try it.

We have considered it. Biggest problem is it will be a lot of material to try and zap. Might work the machine too hard. Just speculating

@@farmingwithcarp8551 it’s worth a shot I think. it’s not my piece of equipment though so it’s easy for me to want to try it.
