When it comes to covers, I feel like Jeff Buckley's rendition of Hallelujah should always be number one. This is just such an emotional fucking roller coaster, what a voice this man had, what a performance it is. Such a shame we lost such a talent at such a young age. Considering Hurt, even though Johnny Cash is a legend and an absolutely unique artist, I feel like the fact that Trent is the one who wrote this song is so underappreciated. I mean, 95% of people I know who like this song don't even know that it was originally performed by Nine Inch Nails and never heard the original version. I feel like these are two completely different songs and there are two different meanings and feelings that Trent and Johnny put into it while performing (I mean, there's a reason Johnny didn't feel like singing "crown of shit" and decided to sing "crown of thorns", right?), but I still prefer the original, it's just so haunting, raw, and it's definitely the best thing Trent ever wrote lyrically and emotionally. To add to the list: Torn by Hands Like Houses (originally by Ednaswap, made famous by Natalie Imbruglia), That's What I Like by Dance Gavin Dance (originally by Bruno Mars), The Man Who Sold The World by Nirvana (originally by David Bowie). I dare everyone who haven't heard it, check out Torn by Hands Like Houses, they did so much justice to this song, it's on a completely different level than the original, I think.

I adore quite a bit of Elton John's music though Gaga takes the cake here. And I just love both versions of Hurt due to their different tones, They both are good in their own right. I didnt know Hurt wasn't originally by Cash for the longest time. I hope Cash is resting peacefully now. Aaa so many amazing songs here! If you haven't heard Chase Holfelder's cover of "Animal" you should definitely check it out! His version is more emotional and the eerie atmosphere suits the lyrics better imo.

The first version of All Along the Watchtower that I heard was the Hendrix version. I eventually found out that it was a cover, but I was told by multiple sources that his version was the superior version, so I never made a point to check out the original. Then after a few years, Nerdwriter1 made a video about the original version, and he convinced me to check it out. After I heard it, I still believed that the Hendrix version was better, but I found that I couldn’t get the original out of my head. Dylan just put so much emotion in his harmonica (I would say equally as much as Hendrix put in with his guitar), and his vocals sounded so forthright and so urgent; I couldn’t deny the unmitigating drive of the song. Eventually, I deleted the Hendrix version off my phone because it always made me want to listen to the original, and I found it prudent to just cut out the middle-man and get straight to what I wanted, so now I only listen to the Dylan version.

Seven just using one artist: 1. I'll Take Care of You by Beth Hart on vocals and Joe Bonamassa on guitar which totally eliminates the van backing up in the Bobby Bland original. Three months later after this release, Drake and Rihanna came out with Take Care. Miley Cyrus sings this version at her concerts. In a Snapchat video, Lana Del Rey is listening to this version of the song. 2. Guilty covered by Beth Hart, but originally done by Randy Newman. Beth Hart actually saves this boring song by adding energy and believability to this song. The Newman version is tired and lifeless. 3. Think first performed by Aretha Franklin. Beth Hart adds power, energy and sass to the original. 4. Strange Fruit by Beth Hart on vocals and Joe Bonamassa on guitar which was first performed by Billie Holiday. This performance makes it one of the most haunting versions ever. 5. Beth Hart's performance of Like The Way I Do. Beth Hart just out powers Melissa Ethridge by a wide margin while still keeping the emotion of the original. 6. Beth Hart and Vintage Trouble covering Get It On by Ike and Tina Turner. This version has far more energy with less players on stage. 7. I'd Rather Go Blind first sang by Etta James and covered by Beth Hart and Jeff Beck at The Kennedy Center Honors. She has covered this song with Joe Bonamassa and a few different ways with her own band. This performance was listed by the Kennedy Center Honors as one of its top five performances the Honors has had. The Kennedy Center Honors has been around for 41 years.

I don’t get all the love for CHVRCHS, CHVRCHES, or whatever. Just because you have synthesizers in the twenty-first century doesn’t make you indie. Arcade Fire’s worst album’s synths are better than everything that band made combined. That voice and lyrics are way too poppy to be indie (about sound, not record labels). At least the Monkeys bothered to have a little sound variation on AM. Great video as always, though, Jon!

I personally prefer the NIN version of Hurt. I feel like the use of the lydian chord in the verse, and richer chord voicings in the chorus make the song sound more unstable and emotional. I also prefer Trent's vocals.

I'm waiting desperately for the day someone mentions Joe Cocker's cover of The Beatles "I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends," and Gary Jules' cover of Tears for Fears "Mad World."

I was so hoping Jolene would be on here because I would sell my soul to the White Stripes just as praise for that cover

Metallica's Whiskey In The Jar just might take the cake for me. I'm lucky enough to have heard it live and it was just amazing. But All Along the Watchtower is just so damn good and engraved into my brain forever.

Metallica always play Whiskey whenever they play in Ireland & unsurprisingly it's a massive crowd pleaser + theres pictures of James posing with the Phil Lynnoth statue in Dublin

Surprised to see Silverstein's cover of Runaway here, it sounds fantastic imo. Great video, lots of crazy covers. One of my favorite covers is when a band called coldrain covered that song Uninvited, it just sound phenomenal and so full of the right energy.
