No sponsor, times are hard. But With Russia losing several aircraft in Ukraine lately, it's made me wonder why they don't use their Su-57 stealth aircraft? After all, that's what stealth is for, to avoid radar and being shot down! So we explore why they're not around, how many Russia even has, what they'd even be able to achieve, and all with the latest satellite imagery

More hollow bragging. It is easily disproven by the fact that they are not dominating the sky over Ukraine. Russia is always saying the BS that you're repeating. And if the Armata was the wonder tank you claim, again why are they not using them? Because if they did the world would see this is all more false boasts. The proof is in the pudding and they are afraid to serve it up.😆

Despite having an order for "75" Su-57s, and the Russian ministry/Sukhoi constantly claiming they'll be delivering 2 dozen "soon" for the last like 8 years, the fact is they're highly dependent on foreign components. Allegedly they've delivered all of 4 new Su57s this december (the total for the ENTIRE year), I really wouldn't be surprised if they just took 4 of the test aircraft, polished them up a bit, and slapped new numbers on them. Russia has literally been caught bolstering it's number of vehicles by changing numbers before. The rule of thumb when it comes to counting Russian assets is "If they say they have 30, or 200, or 1000 of them, but you only see 8, it's because they only have 8". They famously LOVE showing off their number of assets, be it tanks, ICBM launchers, aircraft etc. So the only reason to have so few in a picture, is because they don't have that many.

The stupid thing is that some of their weapon systems are actually very capable, but those aren't the things being hyped and shown off to the world at every opportunity. A good example is the R-29RMU2 submarine-launched ballistic missile which is reliable, has been in service over a decade now, has a very long range and makes use of some seriously impressive technology and engineering in its engines. It's a really good missile that showcases what Russian engineers can do with the right resources but you never hear about it and it's virtually unknown in the West outside of military circles and hardcore rocket nerds. Why doesn't Russia shout about R-29RMU2 when it compares favourably with the latest Western missiles? - Because it can't sell them since they're strategic nuclear delivery systems.

Last time i heard that the T-14 was officially ready for production (before the war) but then they were talking about redesigning a T-90M turret to fit a new autoloader that can hold Vacum1 and Vacum2 shells that the armata use. Also, being able to detect a stealth aircraft does not mean you can target said aircraft. Stealth aircraft can be detected with low frequency(longer slower wavelength) radars but that return isn't good enough for targeting. The high frequency (shorter faster wavelengths) radar used for targeting can't "see" stealth aircraft. That's why countries like China and Russia say "they can detect the f-35" or f-22. They can but they can not target them. But they like to play on people ignorance about how stealth aircraft and radars work. They play the same game for hypersonic missiles too.

"That's why countries like China and Russia say "they can detect the f-35" or f-22. They can but they can not target them." Russia can do both. China can do both, but at shorter range. Some other nations are also capable of this, but Russia is current leader in antistealth tech. By a big margin. China is probably 2nd in line. And because USA specifically disallowed such research up until 10-15 years ago, USA and most of Nato are FAAAR behind. "The high frequency (shorter faster wavelengths) radar used for targeting can't "see" stealth aircraft. " That's a misconception and wrong. The RANGE they can be seen is REDUCED, not made impossible. And there's a number of tricks for improving both range and chance to detect. "They play the same game for hypersonic missiles too." And yesterday, a Ukraine commander Ignati admitted that Ukraine's airdefence have NEVER even hit a Russian supersonic missile. Supersonic includes hypersonic in case you don't understand this.

It's pretty obvious why the Russians aren't using them. The final engines, which produce more power and are more stealthy, haven't even reached production yet. Currently only low numbers of aircraft are being produced and they will almost exclusively be used for training and testing. It's still quite possible that they don't even go ahead with mass production. That's actually what happened to the Armata tank. They did some field tests, looked at what they had learned in Ukraine, sent it back to the drawing board for a redesign and in the meantime the Armata production line has been shifted to other vehicles. Trustworthy information regarding how stealthy the Su-57 really is doesn't exist in public. The only thing we can 100% safely assume is that the materials are not as good as the western ones, but that doesn't actually affect low frequency radar all that much so it's more an issue regarding targeting radars and active seekers. So we can't really say how far away we will be able to spot it, only that it's somewhere between a gen 4-4.5 aircraft and a western gen 5 and that once we do it will be easier to lock on to. Ukraine has one of the most densely defended airspaces on the planet and when it comes to SEAD, if that is their main goal, then it would probably be a lot more resource efficient for Russia to just produce more long range anti-radiation missiles. It's important to remember that Russian doctrine and western doctrine are different. If we evaluate their equipment based on our own usage methodology we are bound to misjudge them.

Russian doctrine in Syria is to have air supremacy within it's area or denial, so there is an overlap with western doctrine, yet they don't have air supremacy over Ukraine territory. Not using a so-called stealth aircraft to achieve this alludes to the Russians either not having faith in their aircraft' abilities or they don't have many/any to spare....their pilot numbers may also be a factor.

Exactly and first of all they don't need Su-57's to deal with Ukraine. Secondly, Russia has only just now managed to get the right engines for them so they can fly at supercruise. As you know, you can't be a stealth jet without supercruise.

That is not even the reason. The jet is simply undergoing state trials and occasionally launches some cruise missile or weapon at Ukrainian line near the border. Curious.... I'd have expected that _at least_ one of the reasons for not using them would be that Ukraine now has NATO radars and AA missiles. And flying it over Ukraine would be a _valuable_ date collection opportunity for the US and others. Russia isn't using them in Ukraine because they have so few of them, they are reliant on parts that are made in the west so any losses can't be replaced and they still haven't worked the bugs out of the system. Russians love to talk about all their new wonder weapons, but the people in charge of these programs are usually from the Siloviki and are part of the state security apparatus not the military. Let's compare the Su57 and F-35 Stealth Design: - The Su57 is not a stealth jet, but a low observable aircraft. This is because it has numerous design flaws. From the front the turbine blades substantialy relect radar waves, because of the lack of S shaped air ducts. Furthermore rather than using radar absobant material they painted the plane blue and white for airshows. Additionatly the horrendous build quality exaggerates this flaw. Large parts of the engines are exposed and a rounded infrared search and track system (IRST/thermal) is used harming stealth even further. All in all the radar cross section (RCS) comes to a 0,5m². • The F35 has a great design with a Y shaped air duct. The lack of 90 degree angles and accuratly designed rounded surfaces avoid the double bounce effect. The aircraft utilizes large amounts of radar absorbant materials and is practically covered in it. The F-135 engine also was specifically developed to reduce radar return and the heat signature. Combining everything the RCS come to 0,001m². Electronics: - The Su57 uses a 1st gen aesa radar "N036 Byelka" with ~1530 Transmit-Receiver-Modules (TRM) of cheaper slot style antenas with limited bandwith. The predeccesor Iris-B had horrible performance being on the same level as the 2 decade old mechenical An/Pg-70 utilized on the F-15E. So it doesn't look promising for the N036 Byelka. The Su57 also employes 2 N036B side X-band radars with ~380 TRMs each. In theory this would help keep a radar lock while your aircraft is turning away. In reality the small size of the radar gives it only ¼ the range of the already poor front radar. In terms of functionality the side radars are complety useless, because a missile will be closer to the target and therefore will have a better lock than what the tiny side radar can give you. The only real use is for spacial awarness in which the range is once again a hindrance. Side radars on the modern battelfield are completly obsolete. The aircraft also employs 2 N036L L-band radars on the leading edge flaps that are primarly used friend-or-foe-identification (IFF) or for electronic warfare (EW) also called jamming. Usually the front radar is used for EW, but because 1st gen radars are practically useless at it due to limited bandwidth, the russians use the L-Band radar. The N036L does not have the size nor the power utilization as a the front radar therfore the peformance is not even close to the competition. The russian EW system also includes the L402 Himalayas with its antennas between the 2 engines. The most modern russian EW systems have been captured by the ukranians and have been sent to the USA for reverse engineering to find its weaknesses and exploits. With the gathered knowledge the F35 will get a software and hardware update to better handle EW. To detect stealth aircraft without giving away its own location the 101KS-V, a single infrared search and track (IRST/thermal) camera is present on the nose of the aircraft. In all likelihood the IRST has poor performace taking into account that the previous russian systems were technologically left behind. The aircraft can also be equipped with a ground trageting pod called "101KS-N". It has a day and thermal camera plus a laser to range and designate targets. Because the targeting pod does not have a stealthy shape the RCS is harmed further when equipped. The 101KS-U missile approach warning system (MAW) of the Su57 is based on detecting ultraviolet radiation. To detect the missile the rocket motors still need to be burning. Most anti-air missiles burn for a few seconds before gliding the remaining distance. Therefore this system has a very short range and is only effective within visiual range (WVR) and is useless for beyond visial range (BVR) combat. The 101KS-O a directional infrared countermeasure (DIRCM) system is a laser that blinds missiles equipped with an infrared seeker. This system can be found below and behind the cockpit. Obviously this has no effect on radar guided missiles and it is questionable if this system has sufficient accuracy to track a missile. An omnidirectional datalink is employed in the aircraft. This does not allow for transmitting large amounts of data and makes sensor fusion between different aircraft impossible. Stealth is also harmed, because the omnidirectional signal can be picked up by enemy aircraft. The pilots need to choose between operating with coordination or giving up their stealth. Regardless of what they choose they end up being killed if their advisery are real 5th gen aircraft. • The F35 uses the 3rd gen An/Apg 81 aesa radar with 1676 TRMs utilizing the advanced notch antenna design which is needed for effective EW. The jet also incorporates a system called An/Aaq-37 Electro-Optical Distributed Aperture System (DAS). It consists of 6 fixed wide angle thermal cameras that can track air or ground targets in a 360° sphere. It is used for MAW and spatial awarness enabling the pilot to see through the airplane. Another system called An/Aaq-40 electro optical targeting system (EOTS) contains a rotatable zoom thermal camera and a laser designator for independent targeting of air, ground targets and dropping of laser guided bombs. EOTS even allows for precision strikes in an war environment where GPS is jammed. The An/Asq-239 system has 3 main tasks: radar warning, targeting support and self protection. The An/Asq-239 system can detect incoming radar waves in a 360° sphere. It provides a radar warning and locates the position of the radar emitter for a trageting solution without even turning its own radar on. The small antennas of the An/Asq-239 have weak performance in comparsion to the front radar for EW. Thanks to the small RCS of the F35, exceptional performance in EW for self protection is possible without a large power requirement. This makes the aircraft indistinguishable from the background noise for targeting radars or incoming missiles in a 360° sphere. Even if an enemy radar is just scanning for the F35, the low power usage makes the use of EW unnoticable. As the last defense the aircraft can deploy the ALE-70 countermeasure. It is a fiber optic towed decoy that emits radar signals to jam the missile. Because the decoy is directly connected to the aircraft computer, different patterns can be created. The An/Asq-242 is an intergarated communications, navigations and identification (ICNI) system. These functions include IFF and a high speed narrow directional datalink called "multi functional advanced data link" (MADL). It allows the aircraft to send data while not compromising stealth. 97% of the electronic in the F35 are accessible without taking other componets apart. This makes the F35 easily repairable and cheaper to operate. Sensor Fusion: - For the Su57 there is a lack of information about its data fusion system, which is not a good sign. I will take an educated guess that some sort of data fusion is present, but it is in the same poor shape as the rest of the aircraft. So the extremly deficient implementation of the sensor fusion will be feed by the obsolete sensors and the slow datalink. The russian enginneers have bigger flaws to fix and with only a few aircraft operational I doubt that the fusion algorithms are anywhere close to being combat proven. The aircraft information is presented through multiple LCD displays and a heads-up display (HUD). • The F35 can command the DAS system to track a target after it leaves the FOV of the front radar and combines it with the data of the An/Asq-239. This increases range and precision of the track and avoids multiple duplicates, allowing the pilot to make faster and better decisions. The high speed datalink fuses all information gathered by all sensors of other F-35s. This enables the F35 to piece together a precise image of the battelfield and exand its capabilities. If the aircraft indetifies an object it is marked and geolocated for all NATO troops, infantery, tanks, ships, aircraft, ... This data can then be changed or updated in real time. The pilot is being presented all this information by multiple touch screens and through an advanced helmet mounted display system with intergrated night vision, instead of an inferior HUD. The Pilot has also the option to interact with the plane through a speech recognition system. Manoeuvrability: - The Su57 has a maximum speed of mach 2 powered by its twin Saturn AL-41F1 engines. The combined thrust is 177kN dry and 284kN using its afterburner. The Saturn AL-41F1 has a 3D thrust vectoring nozzle. Moreover the aircraft has an empty weight of 18t and a maximum takeoff weight of 35t giving it a thrust to weight with maximum fuel and no armament at 1,02. The jet has a combat radius of 1655km on internal fuel tanks. The russian air force has access to 15 Il-78 aerial refueling aircraft. • The F35 "Fat Amy" has a maximum speed of mach 1,6 powered by its single F135 engine putting out 125kN dry thrust and 191kN with its afterburner. Furthermore the jet has an empty weight of 13,3t and a max takeoff weight of 29,9t giving it a thrust to weight with maximum fuel and no armanment at 0,9. The jet has a combat radius of 1324km on internal fuel tanks. The american airforce has access to 398 KC-135, 58 KC-10 and 72 KC-46 aerial refueling aircraft. Moreover the F35 B and C variants are aircraft carrier capable.
@Mr.Dodo-
@Mr.Dodo- Жыл бұрын
Part 2 Conclusion: - The Su57 has lacking stealth and the electronics are uncompetitive. The ultra violet MAW and the DIRCM are well suited against Manpads that use short range WVR infrared guided missiles. This shows that the engineers knew that the Su57 is only a low observable jet and that it is completly outmatched if it tries to go into BVR combat against real stealth aircraft. So as a last futile effort, systems were added to the aircraft that allows it to fly low to the ground. This is also the reason why the Su57 put so much effort into manuvrability. The manuvrability is the only advantage were the Su57 scores and it is complety useless in modern BVR engagments. The Su57 is more on the level of other low observable aircraft like the 4.5 gen eurofighter typhoon. The eurofighter is still better, because it is getting 3rd gen aesa radars and it is combat proven with more than half a thousand aircraft flying. • F35 The advanced integrated systems were not an afterthought and this shows. The stealth, electronics and sensor fusion work well together and the strengths are amplified. It dominates in BVR combat and has great system integration with NATO. With nearly 1000 aircraft produced the power projection is massive in combination with the huge amount of aerial refueling aircraft and it being carrier capable. Maybe you think that I am exageratting the performance, but in combat exercises the F35 consitently scores 20 - 0 against 4.5 gen aircraft. Endnote: I compared the F35 to the Su57, because they are both the most advanced multirole jet aircraft of each nation has to offer. I excluded the "armaments" category, because it will strongly vary depending on the mission. Comparing air to air missiles also get way to complicated with missles with better seeker being able to outperform missiles with longer theoretical range ... Thanks for reading !!!

Nobody has published ther RCS "numbers": First of all RCS is not a number, but a spectrum that changes with the attitude of the plane. Secondly RCS is top secret for all planes, even non-stealth oenes. Let alone most modern stealth planes. So ALL the talk about RCS this and that is pure speculation. The ONLY thing that can be said for certain is that USAF uses much more expensive RAM coating in the F35 (and to extent in F22), but that RAM coating has also drawbacks like being very averse to rain and does not work as well against large waveband radars.

Su-57 may have a frontal radar cross-section against airborne radars similar to a B-2 stealth bomber or 4th gen Gripen C jet fighter in a clean configuration (0,1m2) but Su-57 will have a much lower side profile than Gripen and its detectability would be further lowered one way or another due to a rather comprehensive jamming suite utilizing multiple radar arrays. In fact, as far as I know, no Western fighter is comparable in this regard, not even dedicated US "jamming" planes like Growler, not to mention that just flying low will make you invisible to the ground radars of most nations unless you got some early warning radar in high altitude, and even airborne radar has reduced detection range against low flying jets due to ground clutter. So, all this trashing troll talk about the incompetence of the Russian aerospace industry is rather pointless. In all seriousness, the Su-57 can have the potential to be superior to the F-35 or even F/A-22 in direct AA combat due to its kinematic performance with new engines, multispectral sensors, and active radar/IR missile jamming because producing 5th gen air superiority jet fighter not capable doing so 20 years after the introduction of 5th gen jets of opposition would make little sense, especially when Mig 1.42/1.44 5th gen project was canceled as likely not good enough but due to lack of new missiles, questionable training, and overall lack of resources to get the most from their Russian tech, you can see how Su-57 can end when you look how Mig-29 performed with the underfunded armies of Middle East using export models with short-range missiles, and how Mig-29 performed in Ukraine, where it's flying to this day despite Russians operate arguably superior jets. These are among the reasons why Russia will not be in a hurry to send their newest tech into harm's way, not like there is a need for that against what Ukraine has...

this is nonsense. the us navy believes the opposite. they don't think they can detect the SU-57 with a F-35 (latest gen AESA) until they get within 40-50 miles of them. the vast majority of stealth is just geometry. and if they ever make the IR sensors a little stealthy with a better housing look out. you can see 4th gen fighters from hundreds of miles away with very old school radar ram or no ram. now the navy rekons they can get within 15-20 miles before the f-35 can be resolved but there's nothing that can take out the su-57 but the fth gen American fighters. everything else in the world loses 1000 to zero. and since Russia doesn't go pushing its ideology all over the world and attacking everyone who doesn't fall in line with liberal-capitalism it's good enough for defense when they have ground radar to help them. f-35 is so small large wave radar can pick it up and vector in assets.

real RCS F22 in front projection 0.2-0.3 side projection 0.5, Su-57 approximately the same values from the front. To protect against meter waves, you need a stealth coating thickness of at least 0.5 meters. You probably need at least half a decimeter from decimeter waves. As you know, F22 and F35 do not have a large thickness of stealth coating. The only US stealth aircraft was the F117 and it was useless and therefore discontinued (as was the F22). As for Ukraine, then this video does not tell important details that sometimes lead to incidents. So you are being lied to everywhere here.

this video, like so many, think stealth is a material - thats only about 40% of what stealth is - the biggest diffeence between the F35 and F22 is what is emitted from the flying a/c (what its systems emit in the form of electro-magnetic emissions - radar, internal systems, comms, etc) - the F22 is designed to play on its own, its nickname is the 'little awacs', as it needs little help externally - the F22 uses a passive RWR to detect, it uses something akin to multiple super-computers onboard to fuse intel into usable facts - its RWR sees others radar, comms output and other noisey internal systems to detect another but part of this stealth feature on the F22 is its mission systems computers, utilising all its fused intel into a means to help it get closer - if you can see a ground radar and identify what it is, then using detected frequencies (modes of use) you can calculate your RCS return to that radar and get much closer - the F22 uses something akin to CLOAR (Common Low Observable Auto Router) to calulate a stealthy approach onto a target or 'thread the needle' through a nest of ground / airbourne threats - this feature alone is probably worth 40% to stealth with the remaining percentage being keeping emission from onboard system to min - all these factors also take into account manourvers from your a/c, where the mission computer gives the pilot options - early prototypes of this mission computer came from the Pilots Associate Programme from R&D done back in the 80/90'see - the UK had its MMA programme this is probably what the russian's are missing - this mission system capability for on-mission stealth - modern NATO computing whilst hidden in securey, probably utilises modern GPU computing (you can buy versions of todays NVidia GPU's for airborne military use), where a nest of these processing elements could run 10's of thousands of RCS predictions against a emittor to calculate a possible route to get closer the US flys at 5k alt, whilst the Uk plays at around 50m+ (or lower) using terrain to mask its approach - the US has numbers, whilst the UK has far less numbers - Storm-Shadow shows this effect, as it is designed to fly very low using terrain masking to hide its flight, the US launches high even UK and US cruise missiles come with mission systems to calculate mission profiles, were these need to be done before the weapon can even be used whilst the SU-57 may have stealth material in its makeup, we do not know if it has an effective on-board mission system to utilise these capabilities - i think NOT - why do both the UK and US train so hard and so constantly - we just do not see this from the Russian pilots - and why are there so few SU57's - i suspect an indication came from India when it pulled out of the SU57 programme quoting tech exchange issues and not coming close to what was advertised by russia Russian does not produce its own computing tech for adv computing - its rumoured to be around 80nm, whilst just commericial computing in the WEST is around 4nm from home grown industrys, so god knows what military levels are - both the UK and US use federated computing (distributed computing) around the a/c to do adv computing, then factoring in new AI computing tech into the mix on these computing systems Russia may have AI computing tech understanding, just not as much hardware to implement it on for flight system given sanctions - this was one of the best decisions that the US / UK / EU made in limiting such adv computing maufacture to be shared outside of their regions - Russia can buy, could have bought once such computing boards, just not in any great numbers anymore

What's the point of recovering it's radar?
@trolleriffic
@trolleriffic Жыл бұрын
@@chilbiyito Stealth aircraft make use of low probability of intercept (LPI) radar technologies that make their radar signals very hard to detect and jam because they constantly change frequency, use multiple frequencies at once and employ various other techniques that make radar emissions seem like background noise. Because of this they can operate in places where using older types of radar would light them up like a Christmas tree and negate the advantage of having stealth, and it lets them operate in environments where there's heavy electronic jamming. Capturing a radar can reveal exactly how it hides its signals and defends against jamming so you can figure out how to detect and jam it. It can also give useful clues about other radars from the same product family or manufacturer. Radar tech is one of the most closely guarded secrets in modern military aircraft and maintaining that secrecy can be the difference between totally dominating the enemy's airspace and being unable to fly anywhere near it in case your planes get shot down.
