Those practicals that David began giving are awesome!! If I borrowed from you, then I earn money, use enough for food and gas, necessities, the rest is "your money". Amen!! And, if you use credit cards, pay off every month... no carrying a balance. I have been doing that for 35 years. Amen! If one says they would do something, we need to let our YES be yes, and NO be no, not doing that, James says will bring judgment at Judgment Day seems to be the implication. The devil uses MARKETING to allure us into discontentment.

This is the exact same message I’ve heard in every church I’ve attended. He starts off saying being content with food and clothing is how we are to live and then proceeds to amend that statement for the rest of the sermon.

My wife and me came under convection with credit card. We didn’t like the idea of spending money we don’t have, and becoming a slave to the lender.

I grew up in the 1970s with a single mom always running from bill collectors. I started my adult life endeavoring to always pay off my credit cards each month, using them as David Bercot said he does. No revolving credit card debt is the only Christian way to have credit cards. May the Lord help us.

Sobering even if certain passages are misaligned with English word "coveteousness", we all know the message David gives here is Biblical because of commands to be content etc. Here is another layer of consideration: The Greek word χάρις charis can mean grace, favor but also thanks, gratitude. So David's message reinforced my belief that Ephesians 2:8-9 of saved by charis χάρις is both God's kindness, grace but also our gratitude, thanks in our hearts.

Favor, kindness, ... but some of Paul's passages has in THE CONTEXT the idea of unmerited. It has not been, for this reason, hard for Protestant teachers to convince people that Grace means unmerited favor.

Translations are needed but they sometimes fall short. English translation errors do not somehow change what God had written in Greek. Quite often, the Greek word translated as COVETEOUSNESS varies. Hebrews 13:5 ("not affectionate for silver" αφιλαργυρος) has a different word than 1 Corinthians 5:10 and 6:10 ("increasing possessions" πλεονεκτης from πλεον + εχω) Romans 7:7 differs also. It is the word most often translated as lust επιθυμια. This is the only word of these three mentioned so far that has ANYTHING to do with desire. It is most often translated as LUST. So Paul said "I would not have known LUST (intense desire) except had the Law not said 'Do not lust'". This is where the English OTs that translate from Masoretic Hebrew translate it as COVET but from the LXX Septuagint the word is what the NT uses as LUST (intense desire). Our English word COVETEOUSNESS is heavily about desire but not what it should be in Hebrews 13:5, neither 1 Corinthians 5:10 & 6:10.

Quality translations are typically done by teams, and preferably diverse, highly-qualified teams, to avoid as much individual, cultural, theological, academic, and other biases becoming involved as possible. Greek, especially Koine, is significantly less precise than English with a much smaller vocabulary, meaning that the variability and the possibilities for interpretation are greater. If most rigorous translations agree that the word and the context best equate to a particular English word or phrase, that is likely to be more reliable than any individual's take on it.

I really enjoyed this sermon. A question I have is would my covetous nature follow me into heaven, if it could. I mean we will be different In heaven so how could my earthly desires follow me in ?

Well since it is a deadly sin I take it as we better get rid of that tendancy or craving now in order to get in to heaven. Otherwise we won't inherit the kingdom of God. Even if we would get in I think like David B said that we won't enjoy heaven beacuse there is another standard and we would only be like Lucifer being envious etc... God bless you
