Dr. Chen Fu, a hospitalist at NYU Langone Medical Center, reflects on his experience as an Asian-American doctor on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

I just got a new pcp who is Chinese last week and didn't even think about what race he was until just now when I saw this video in my suggestions. My old doctor is the real villain to me. He decided to switch from an internal medicine specialist to an aesthetic provider doing beauty treatments for the $$$ and as such no longer accepted my insurance. I set an appointment over the phone after highly invasive surgery and verified my insurance at that time. I arrived at my appointed time to find all of this out and was told I was SOL basically. Turns out this switch happened months ago and I, nor my insurer were ever informed. Wasn't easy getting there during this pandemic especially after surgery days before and I needed medication to keep my heart beating lol. Luckily for me any doctor is willing to take on a new patient during all of this, I could not have cared less if his name was Dr. Shen... now it makes me proud that it is.

This has happened to me once, when I was sitting peacefully in the train and this lady, who is a foreigner, come up and told me that all Chinese eat wildlife and asked me whether I eat them? Fortunately, after I said no and she'd asked about my relative; to whether they eat wildlife, three people stood up to me and I felt very grateful about this. As an westernised Asian, UK is known for it's hospitality towards people with different ethnic background. Those who says rude, offending slurs and stereotypes are just a nuisance and you should not take it in so deeply.
