This is one of my favorite episodes. I remember when it was briefly removed from airing because of the real-life Columbia disaster back in 2003. It feels like a lifetime ago... Also, Doohan is named after actor, James Doohan. He played Scotty on Star Trek: The Original Series. Both characters are engineering geniuses with incredible skills and a bit of a temper.

Some notes: "Wild Horses" is a Rolling Stones song. "Doohan" the mechanic is a reference to James Doohan, Scotty the engineer from _Star Trek TOS._ The three pirates are named George, Harmon, and Ruth, which is the real name of baseball legend Babe Ruth: _George Harmon "Babe" Ruth_ who played for the Boston Red Sox. Miles is a fan of the fictional "Blue Sox" baseball team. The real Space Shuttle Columbia broke up on reentry and was destroyed about 5ish years after this episode was produced. Spike's marks on the glass of his ship window to keep the Swordfish at a certain angle are based on the last flight of the Mercury program when pilot Gordon Cooper had to do the same thing during reentry. (It is important to enter the atmosphere at the correct angle or the spacecraft will get too hot due to compression heating and burn up like a falling star.) All of Doohan's technobabble about repairing the Swordfish is not real, but very similar to conversations I've had hanging around old mechanic shops many times. (I have a friend who races old VW bugs, and this is very reminiscent of talk in his shop.)

Fun notes to add: 1. This was produced a few years before the Columbia was destroyed upon re-entry. RIP, crew of the Columbia. 2. Ein's actions actually save the Bebop, most likely. By allowing the mono-system to be corrupted briefly (he interrupts Edward's attempts to override the virus), the Bebop actually stays put, spinning in place. If Edward had taken the Bebop directly into the fracas before the hijackers decide to make their getaway, it's very likely that the hijackers actually TAKE the Bebop instead of just making tracks. Sure, it will take longer for Edward to rescue Faye and Jet, but at least they get to keep the Bebop.

VKunia , major points you missed in episode ,the Old man's face structure and hair style notice a similaritiy ? He's Spike's Father , , , he gave Spike the Swordfish , , the helper revealed the Swordfish was a well known "Mono-racer" , perfect space vehicle for a bounty hunter chasing bounties , , , it's a fun Anime and it had a limited run , , therefore easy to collect entire DVD set 😸👍👍

July 23/24th.....we're coming up on 3 months. Girl....if I did this for a living, I would NEVER just quit THIS series at episode 19 without a word. How about a pinned comment with a brief explanation?? Or edit the description?? ANYTHING. Like....my god....what a slap in the face. I can't imagine doing that to my audience!! You have SEVEN EPISODES LEFT! At this point you can still redeem yourself by recording the remaining episodes and posting a few back-to-back uploads. Worse than quitting this series, which can happen due to copyright and legal issues....exponentially worse....is the SILENCE about it....while you watch...the Mandalorian? And random movies. A simple paragraph..... few sentences.....like how do you maintain an audience but avoid such a basic gesture??

If there is nothing after 4 months then i think im out. If only we could get one chanel update addressing this then it would be fine. I'm guessing the low views are the reason but you never know. I think the most viewed Bebop episode got 15k and the average episode seems to get around 7 or 8.

9:06 Getting back to Earth is maybe the most dangerous thing a spaceship could do! It's all about the right angle of approach. If you come in to shallow, parallel to planet surface, you bounce back into space similar to how a jet ski bounces on water. If you come in too steep like going straight down vertically, you burn to ashes because of the air friction. In order to enter the atmosphere safely, you also have to have heat shielding on your ship and maintain the ship in a heading where that shielding can block most of the heat.

The problem with this episode is that the shuttle would burn up if it lost even one heat shield. It happened in real life after this anime was made.

Oh boy! I have been watching anime since the 70s (yup, I am THAT old). I remember watching on TV such classics as Speed Racer, Star Blazers, Robotech, Kimba The White Lion, Astroboy, Par Man, and in the late 90s and early 2ks I have bought Tenchi Muyo, Ah! My Goddess, Stratos 4, Love Hina, Najica Blitz Tactics, Demon Beast Invasion, Blue Seed (to name a few). You should watch The Girl Who Leaped Through Time, Riding Bean, Gunsmith Cats, Gunslinger Girl, Noir, Tri-Gun.

The old man I always thought was ironic because in Gundam 0083 he looks like a Cross between the Flight Lieutenant and the Albion's Captain (Main ship) English Dubs he even shares the same Voice Actor as the Captain so it always makes me smile, because of the similarities.

Angle of entry into Earth’s atmosphere is important. At the wrong angle it’ll destroy the ship you’re in. 🤷‍♂️

You have to come in at a broad angle when you land....anything...but especially a complex machine with landing gear, if you're trying to salvage anything about it including the pilots/passengers. The force of gravity at a certain point near a planet is too much for the forces generated by the ship to resist and you go into free fall. Jet and Spike were separated by asteroids and too much distance.....to meet up, they were both going to ease their paths circling the Earth drifting towards each other over a long distance....but if you watch.....as this is being discussed, Spike's Swordfish just straight up gets pulled into a nosedive by the Earth's gravity. This is something he can't break/brake out of...which means he'll burn up and die as the Swordfish is torn apart by the force of direct free fall....so he relents and tells Jet to have his whiskey...in his memory.

happens happens. Spike live on a daily basis. If Spike loses, then he wins, and that's how he relaxes. Even well-meaning people can be serious about important things. But he is sad when he remembers the time he spent with his girlfriend and Vicious. When he falls out the window, he sees his previous adventures. People will not be sad forever because new things come out. It's very simple for me to die if I lose. That's Spike. They worry when their partner is in danger, as if they don't care. They are such people that they will die someday. Also, Bounty Hunter has nothing to do with it, but it can keep us entertained.

well...looks like her patreon doesn't exist....her giving up on this series but binging the Mandalorian and watching all this other dopey shit is such a smack in the face. she had like 7 episodes left. no communication. no responses. take whatever delays you need...ya know...life.....but don't leave your audience in the dark. it's the entire point of having a channel.

@@no1guy825 Yhea a lack of communication is never good. To bad it was fun seeing some one watch it for the first time, So what might have happened? Bebop is one of her least viewed series so that might be the reason, but that would be easy to communicate. She seemed to enjoy the show so it would be wired to just stop. It could be problems with the copyright holders but then why are the other videos still up. Maybe she is just taking a break from the show but why no communication? I'll give it a few more weeks maybe it will return.

What's odd about the series is that while you are watching it, you don't appreciate the filler episodes, but when you are done, you find that they become some of your favorites. I just love that mechanics don't change even when the vehicles do.

So out of curiosity, are you planing on watching the Cowboy Bebop movie? The Japanese version is "Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door," and the dubbed version is "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie" (hard to remember I know). It's a stand alone film and an enjoyable watch for Spikes' fight scenes alone. In the timeline of the series I believe it takes place between episodes 22 and 23, so it may be a chance to prolong the inevitable. It's fun seeing you react to the series, but a little sad knowing it's drawing to a close. Cheers!

This is an odé to American "that cranky old geezer stuck in his old ways" films, where there's a old mechanic who fixes up old cars (in this case an old spaceship). There's a young apprentice mechanic who likes modern car mods and some highway bandits causing problems. Spike is the guy who comes to see the only guy who can work on such a relic (classic muscle car) that is the Swordfish. The old man goes on one more/last adventure to show the young'uns he still has it. The Columbia takes on the character of the classic car in the garage.
