I still make baked beans using my grandmother’s recipe which is nearly identical to this with the exception of the bbq sauce. Instead of bbq sauce, I use molasses and some chunked or crushed pineapple and juice for that sweet and tang to go with the chilis. Now I’m going to have to go see if I have all the ingredients on hand to make it!

I usually doctor Bush's Country Style Baked Beans by adding fried bacon, chopped sweet onion, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder and more brown sugar and they're great! Sometimes I'll throw in some pork shoulder (shredded) that I cooked whole in my smoker and man, that smoke flavor! A few slices of fresh jalapeno doesn't hurt either!

I make mine similar. I have tried all kinds bbq sauces and keep going back to regular kraft. Its cheap and a little thicker. I also love to add a smoked sausage that I brown with bacon, onions, bell pepper, and garlic. Add green chilies and fire roasted tomatoes . Although I have never used pork and beans or baked beans probably will soon. My family aways used used dark and light red beans. Jalapeño cornbread and that right there as my daddy used would say “that’ll put hair on your chest boy” . I really have enjoyed watching yalls videos for years here in central Alabama. Hi Kent! I love your channel, because it reminds me of all the great times I had growing up with my Dad in the wild, God's beautiful outdoors! I grew up with my Dad backpacking, mountain climbing, primitive camping, and sailing on the Great Lakes and oceans. We always learned to eat what ever we could find that was indigenous to the areas, along with whatever we brought with us. Dry pinto, kidney, and Navy beans were always a main staple for us, and we would cook them over the fire, and serve them with what ever meat we had, and wild greens or other plants we would find. We often carried home made venison and beef jerky, freeze dried pork chops (that could be reconstituted with water when cooking), sausages that didn't need refrigeration....etc, as well as catching fresh mountain trout or crawdads, and redfish, grouper, and stone crabs from the ocean. We also gathered and ate local dandelion greens, clover, day lilies, wild onions, cattails, swamp potatoes, berries, apples, fried cactus in the desert areas, chicory, mushrooms, walnuts, hickory nuts, and pine nuts (that we would roast on a fire), sarsaparilla roots for hot tea, and mint leaves for refreshing cool drinks. I am much older now, and a diabetic, though I am becoming good at cooking and baking good foods that keep me healthy, and are satisfying. These Cowboy Beans look GREAT, though I would have to make them from scratch, using much less sugar. If I started with dry beans, what type of beans should I use, and should I soak them over night, or just cook them over the fire? I have become pretty good at making "substitutes" for BBQ sauce, using tomato sauce, Swerve Brown Sugar (a great no carb brown sugar made of natural ingredients for diabetics), onions, and other spices. Thank you!!

In Britain baked beans are virtually always in tomato sauce. I recently visited the US and had beans there and they were soooo much better

I must add, these beans are truly a winner. I used 50% more chipotles in adobo, a bit more onion which I first sauteed in a bit of bacon grease and a bit less brown sugar (I used what I had on hand) and the results were amazing. Thanks, Kent and Shan!

Making these tonight! I was raised by a Cajun mom. She made a big pot of rice every evening. Rice with every meal and leftover the next morning with butter and sugar. Forgive me if I eat these over rice and cornbread. Plenty of sweet tea to wash it down with! Oh, by the way, got a big leftover smoked NY strip that'll swim with the bacon!
