I love that there is no holding back on anything. Kent, you tell it as it is. Your explanations are so direct and true to the home cook. You are truly out there to help us cook the old-fashion way without a lot of fancy equipment. Yes cast iron is expensive, but it is a one time purchase, as long as you look after it.

Been eating shepherds (cottage) pie since i was a kid in the 70's. My mum never bought ground beef. She would buy a chunk of meat and mince it herself. Even after moving to the US, it was still a weekly dish. Best thing, it's so easy to make. Thanks Kent, I'll have to try the cowboy version now. :) Congratulations on 400k subscribers!

I shared this creation with my Mother, and my neighbor, and they all agree it's also the best shepherd's pie they ever had. I hope this recipe is in the new cookbook that's coming out in March of 2023. If it's not, then I'll have to write it down. Mr. Kent Rollins is a God send.

Kent, I have made a number of your recipes and enjoyed every one. I made this for me and my room mate (we are both closer to 60 than well, 59). This man was raised in a house where his mother boiled everything until it was not identifiable. I made this the first time and he had a plate. I have mentioned my fussy room mate in previous posts, and he has always liked your recipes. This time he ate a few bites and said to me, "This is a home run!" I think that was an understatement. I have a friend who has "Orphan" Christmas or Thanksgiving for those of us who either don't have family or can't be with them on the holidays. As a thank you, I went there last week and made this for his family, it was a huge hit.

This was a favorite with my parents on the farm. I loved it, still do. Mom also added fresh corn, no peas. she added cheddar cheese in the taters and parma on top. Your recipe gets it up a level, just got your spice and it is a definite now on just about everything. Well done.

Kent, thanks for sharing your cooking. It's mid Sept and hunting season is right around the corner. A few of us at the camp try to bring something new every year for the Dutch Oven and this will be a good one. Of course I will be using some ground venison which is good and lean.

This is one of my favorite videos. I've watched it several times. The location is what makes it special for me. Beautiful country it is. Anytime a fella drives his pickup truck to cook a meal you know it's gonna be good. Especially if you stop at Sonic on the way for a drink for your cup holder. I do love a good shepherds pie and it must be made in cast iron.

One of my favorites! Now that I'm blessed with those Dia Beeties....I have substituted the taters with steamed and mashed cauliflower, I too add celery...and bell peppers mostly cause I like em, and no peas or corn in mine either. To the cauliflower I add shredded parmesan AND some good swiss as well (or) a layer of gouda or gruyere . Another top rail video! ( saw a peek of you in the granger smith video on some of my other favorite channels!!) Hope you tingled their tastebuds too!!

The earliest recipes of shepards/cottage pie was meat and veg, usually carrots and other root veg. So your recipe is pretty spot on to the original . Years ago, people that lived in the villages, usually in small cottages, used to use potatoes when they were running low on flour during the winter. The flour was saved for bread making. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it.

Thank you Sir. Today I've doing your recipe, but with a few changes. I've used more veggies and left out the cream. - Mince: olive oil for frying, minced meat (beef + lamb), onions (red, yellow, grated), celery (grated), carrots (grated), zucchini (grated), garlic cloves (pressed), tomato paste, corn, Sambal Oelek, red wine, beer, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, selfmade vegetable broth powder, dried Parsely. - Potatoes: mashed potatoes (dried powder), water, milk, egg yolk, grated parmesan, salt, pepper, garlic powder. - Topping: Grated Parmesan for sprinkling It was soooo delicious. Thank you and a big virtual hug. Greetings from Germany, Frank

In North America we call what is actually cottage pie “Shepard’s Pie”. Most North Americans don’t even realize Shepard’s Pie is supposed to be made with lamb, and cottage pie is ground beef. I think he called it Shepard’s Pie / Cottage Pie at the start though 👌👌 Edit: to clarify further, the main difference between cottage pie and Shepard’s Pie, other than the meat use, is the consistency. Shepard’s Pie usually holds together fairly well, vs., cottage pie has a bit more of a “gravy”. So essentially this recipe is a good mix between the two. He used the ingredients you’d make for a cottage pie, with the consistency of the Shepard’s Pie. Although I wouldn’t call this a true Shepard’s Pie OR cottage pie without peas 😂😂 classic America

I'm the cook for our local Mason's Lodge. Prior to covid, we did monthly Swiss Steak dinners. The left over swiss steak and gravy made fantastic Shepard's pie. Just added corn and green beans and the sealer, mashed potatoes. Daubed some butter on top to crisp up the top.
