Enjoying this vintage series. Did my apprenticeship in the mid 70's in diesel fuel injection, down in Dorset. We used to see all sorts, loads of hauliers, lots of farmers with all manner of Perkins from p3 to V8's. Even saw the Gardner stuff (usually when the fair was in town) also loads of marine stuff including the big stuff from the tug boats etc. Happy times before electronics. Keep up the good work

I also served a diesel mechanics apprenticeship in the 70s. Worked on Foden eight-wheel tippers and skip loaders with Gardner engines, Albions, Bedfords and Two-stroke Commers. The TS3 engine was an interesting beast and made a fantastic sound. Great days.

@@ianthomson4609 Good to know. Didn't do much vehicle work, just the fuel systems. Back in a time when the stuff could be reconditioned rather than exchanged. Used to do all the injection equipment for Sabre marine, so lots of Ford D series, and R & D work for them until they started their own shop. Loved the Gardners, and I remember the Commers, wasn't the TS3 horizontally opposed? I remember they had a lovely sound. Ahh the good old days
@ianthomson4609

islandjohnnyboy Yes TS3 had three cylinders but six pistons horizontally opposed with Roots blower. Our neighbour ran a fleet of half-cab Foden tippers with the Foden two-stroke engine. If you had a decent driver on the 12 speed gearbox, they would make a glorious sound and make all the office windows rattle.

@@ianthomson4609LOL Got to look into this beast! Six slugs in three bores…. Interesting. My old dodge Cummins sounds like that. I need hearing plugs to drive it. Great when you have a talkative passenger!

@@devmeistersuperprecision4155 Have a look on KZbin for “Commer TS3”. There are also some other very interesting opposed piston two stroke diesel engines - all make a great sound. For example, Napier Deltic, Leyland L60 and Rolls Royce K60. Turn up the volume to 11, rip off the knob and enjoy the noise!! 😱😂

Thanks for the latest Vintage Thursday video Dan. Interesting to see how the PTO engages inside the gearbox. I restored a 1957 Series One Land-rover a few years ago and that had leather oil seals. Before you replace the top cover, can you show the hydraulic pump and describe how the oil flows around the system please.

I am sorry, this is the one I was watching regards the lever thingy. I hope this makes more sense now. Also, on the same subject, where does the hydraulic oil go for the equipment piece at the back, in this case a slasher attachment please? Well I just watched it ALL and saw what I was looking for this time. Thank you. I must have missed it the first time. I do appreciate you videos. Very well presented and you are a good instructor.

Can you remind me of the question with regards to the lever please? The hydraulic oil is filled through the bung to the left of the 2 gear levers. Dipstick for checking the level is on the right hand side of the transmission, opposite the lever in this video.

@@CowfarmerDan Thanks Dan, both questions now answered. Now I am off to the tractor to ensure I have enough oil in the hydraulics for the slasher.

So am I to assume ground speed PTO is whatever speed you are toddling around at? What attachment would use this? I am so in love with the TO35X!!! I want one and am looking!
@CowfarmerDan
@CowfarmerDan 11 күн бұрын
Yes, that's correct. The faster you travel, the faster the shaft turns. Will turn backwards in reverse too. There's not many implements that use it in the UK, could be more in the USA. Some hay turners, planters and it can be used to power a driven axle on a trailer. There was a company here that produced a 4 wheel drive conversion using a special gearbox working from ground speed PTO.
@devmeistersuperprecision4155
@devmeistersuperprecision4155 11 күн бұрын
Thanks! I would love to see the conversion for 4x4. I am moving to a homestead in my retirement. Now that’s a joke! It’s a 50 acre maple sugar bush with no structures. So my channel will go active as I timber frame a new shop, sugar shack etc. I need a tractor and the 35 is almost a perfect fit. From skidding logs to hauling maple sap wagons thru the bush. I had an allis D17 diesel but the engine froze up. I didn’t like as it had horrid hydraulics. Only 1/2 GPM and no remotes. I got my eye on an old TO35 with gasoline engine. The Perkins 4 banger oil burner would be better but that means a 35X.

What implementes would need ground speed pto I have never used it just curious as to when you would use it ?
@richardl7161
@richardl7161 4 жыл бұрын
Presumably you use it if the pto is driving the wheels on the implement being used. I'm only guessing cos I'm not an expert or even a farmer.

I've seen trailers with the axle powered by a ground speed PTO (e.g. for working in peat bogs etc.) I had a Renault with a ground speed PTO and if l got the pick up bunged on The JD round baler I used to engage ground speed then reverse the tractor, it worked like a charm!

Dan,is the pto lever the same on a 135? My neighbours 135 pto lever keeps slipping into neutral when he is topping,must be a weak or broken spring?He ties the lever back with a piece of baleing twine

Another great video young man. A mate of mine has a 1959 grey fergy that is stuck in 1st gear. I don't know a lot about these tractors so not sure if I will be involved with it's repair? If I am, I will try to get a video of it. He has a few grey Fergy's including a great vinyard version too that as far as I know is fully working.

If it's 1959 it'll be a 35. A big screwdriver through the filler plug hole might be all that's needed to free off 1st gear 🤞

@@JonDingle My 1959 MF35 does the same thing once in a while. I use a big screwdriver through the filler hole to slide gears around until the shifter is finally freed. It took me 30 minutes the first time. It takes about 5 minutes now that I've had some practice. Can't say I really know what I'm doing though.

Any idea why the engine PTO might be jumping out under load? Can only think tired detent /detent spring, or maybe worn selector stub..or ring on selector gear. Cant be anything else? Not had it apart yet…was wondering if worn PTO Shaft ? Rear bearing or ?

@@CowfarmerDan The lady owner says someone has already checked…but i have my doubts… She grinds the splines/ gear too each time she engages it..so gotta look at clutch pedal free play too. 1/2 inch mx from memory…3/8th’s ? The bloke that worked on it recently just fixed fuel lek on the feed pipe to the filter from the lift pump by cutting the steel pipe leaving a 1/2 inch stub coming out the first filter and fitting a rubber hose 😞. Looks like the old pipe had rotted away..battery acid maybe. I was going to get filter body off and remove old fitting and clean up, bend/flare/ fit new pipe all the way to the lift pump……hate seeing such quick ‘temp’ fixes..ok if busy in the season…/in field repair..but while laid up over winter 😡
