If you can get a second hand pro or semi pro woodsplitter with a bigger table and a loglift, that would reduce the pressure on your hernia. The added advantage would be that these splitters usually are a lot faster than the boxstore splitter you are using now. another option would be to roll the logs in the bucket of the farmall and lift the bucket to the height of the splitter, that would reduce your lifting by hand and give you a bigger working area at the splitter. I know you are very busy but maybe you can work toward the goal of splitting your firewood a year in advance. Espewcially your oak firewood will not be dry enough to be burned with good efficiency this year. That usually takes over a year to dry after splitting (rule of thumb is one inch per year from the outside in which is why splitting it small reduces the frying time). It will often burn when it is not seasoned, and it will burn longer, but a lot of the heat is lost to evaporating the moisture in the wood, in the end it will result in less heat available for heating.

I would be curious to know how much you save by using the wood boiler besides the hot water wouldn't a efficient wood stove in The Farmhouse be a better route
@NorthernSeclusion2 ай бұрын
We save a lot. The wood boiler heats the house and the house hot water and the whole workshop building front and back and it heats the guesthouse building. We heat all the buildings for about the same amount (a little less actually) than it costed us just to heat the house prior to mus getting the boiler. We could not afford to heat all 3 buildings if we did not have the wood boiler.

I would suggest that you hook up a trailer and throw the wood in it to move it. That way you are not having to pick it up to put it in the bucket and save your back. It wouldn't be hard to tap into the heater from the wood boiler for hot water, so you don't have to carry it from the house.

@NorthernSeclusion2 ай бұрын
They would be easier to mange but cost wise, what you buy for 60.00 (round bale) would cost you about 200.00 if you bought the same poundage in square bales. It is worth the extra work getting the round bales because of the money savings.

I can't eat more than two servings of corn (I love corn), and if I do, I get a bit runny - It causes inflammation in my gut and the gut wants it gone.. Could it be that you're sensitive to the seed coat too, and that you've got a contact dermatitis allergy (Not a deathly allergy, but something that's a but of an annoyance)? .Curious …you seem to pick up then cut wood, throw each piece off to side then load each piece on tractor haul aga then stack. Could it be possible to slim down lifting steps? Maybe after just cutting instead of throwing to side throw directly on tractor since your throwing anyway…the same with splitter instead of picking each piece off ground after splits and throw to side after splits throw on tractor. Just a thought.
@NorthernSeclusion2 ай бұрын
I will be using the tractor to get the big pieces up to the splitter but as far as cutting and then loading it on the tractor, I would then have to go unload the tractor and stack all that wood and then come back and cut another bucket full. I just want to cut and cut and cut, and then do the hauling later. I want to be doing one thing at a time.
@WilliamWBG2 ай бұрын
@@NorthernSeclusion….but after you split the work on the splitter, why not go ahead and stack it onto the tractor. You are adding an entire process by throwing it on the ground after splitting

Why do you take the food away?
@NorthernSeclusion2 ай бұрын
The bucket is usually empty or almost empty. They get grain 2 times a day and if the bucket is still out there Mesa (the one I just milked) will go push Festus away to finish whats left. I only want the cows getting a certain amount of grain every day. If given unlimited grain, a cow will eat itself to death. Also, by giving that grain bucket and Festus getting excited that is it "time to eat," it will make it easy to load him in the trailer next August 1st when he goes in for processing. Cows are animals that want and need a set schedule, he is learning that he only has a certain amount of time to finish that grain, no lolly gagging around. When they first got here and we started doing this, he would only eat a third or half the bucket, now, he gets it usually finished before I come get the bucket.
@R.E.HILL_2 ай бұрын
Nice one.. what happened to the manual milk separator, to much hassle..?
@NorthernSeclusion2 ай бұрын
We will play around with that at a later time. We do want to use it sometimes just to see how it was back then but you learn very quick once you are milking that cleanliness is crucial and you spend a lot of time doing the whole process start (milking) to finish (cream separated and everything clean and ready for next time). Right now we have cut that time down considerably with how we do things to a manageable amount of time. Figuring out the manual cream separator and keeping it sanitized will take time and right now we are still trying to mange the time. If that makes sense. Lol. I will say this, now that we have to disassemble and clean every part of the electric one, putting the parts together and getting the manual one to work will be a lot easier, now that we know how they work.
@WilliamWBG2 ай бұрын
@@NorthernSeclusion…..I’m a bad germaphobe. I know I would spend 5X the time cleaning and disinfecting as I spent milking. In fact, I probably couldn’t drink the milk or cream from a cow that I milked. I would worry too much about it not being pasteurized. LOL. When I cook chicken (or any raw meat), i bleach the entire kitchen and everything that it could have possibly touched. Ive never had food poisoning so I don’t know why I’m so obsessed with it. It’s only the kitchen that germs me out
