I was wondering about the plants. Your explanation makes sense to me. I'm a hobby gardener/indoor plant enthusiast and even putting them 5 inches outside of their ideal light range can kill the damn things. I agree that there's probably not enough light in there. If you REALLY wanted to have plants, you could do a full spectrum /"sunlight" flourescent bulbs from home depot. They basically do the same thing as grow lights, without the luxury markup. You can absolutely wire them into whatever timing system you've got. Godspeed you funky eel man

You have so much potential with that pond and I don't see a need to ever have to rehome anything especially seeing how you can adjust the height of the water. With plants you can get ones that you can keep in a pot or planter that can overhang into the water so you can move them when it's cold. I think it's awesome what you're doing I raise fish myself and love all the different kinds you have. And thanks for sharing your videos I really do enjoy watching them.
@X3nophiliac Жыл бұрын
i could see the amount of turning space being an issue with a 6ft gar or longer, the height could be higher but the 2 ft of water rn seems like a good fit

The "only filtration," dude... that whole pit is biologically active, you have a TON of filtration FOR SURE. As long as you had circulation, you probably wouldnt even need that cannister... but Im sure you already knew that, lol. Im so envious of your setup. So amazing.

You could look into java fern, it’s a great low light plant for the warmer months the good thing about this plant is that it does not root into the ground, so you can take it out in the colder months so it won’t rot.

You should definitely add a shoal of around 100 zebra danios, they just breed naturally and I reckon they’d keep you a constant cycle of snacks for the larger fish. Due to the scale and actual volume of the whole setup, I don’t think they’d made a single difference to the bio load too 🤣 Awesome video man, I’m addicted. Looking forward to more 😄❤️

You could also maybe stock it with some salamanders? A ton of native diversity in Kentucky/Tennessee and they often like hanging out in old pumphouses, cisterns, climbing the walls etc. You could also stock it with some sirens or mudpuppies! And crayfish! I'm surprised the blue crab survive there, I didn't know they can live in completely fresh water

That's a really nice setup! It's like the best of both worlds. It's about as convinient as having a large aquarium indoors and not worrying about temperature fluctiations. Really cool and interesting set up. A couple of ideas that I think would improve the aesthetics. Firstly, I think a couple more lamps with some side lighting would help soften it. It looks a bit harsh with just a single downlight on it. Secondly, an airstone could help break up the light surface scum that is evident from the underwater shots.

When I was in high school I had a 55 gallon tank that I put 2 elvers (about 3 inches long) in that I hand netted from the Quinnipiac river here in CT. They grew to be about a foot long and I let them go back in the river where I got them. Funny thing is, I had never intended on having pet eels. I worked at a pet shop in high school and had lots of tanks but that day I was actually fishing in the river and just happened to look down and there were just loads of these little baby eels all around so I went home and got the net lol.

there are quite a few north American plants that would be suitable for the eel pit, some thicker stemmed ones should be able to handle the crabs, of course you should wait for the sturgeon to get bigger first, but I'm sure there is something you could use instead of fake plants

I might recommend some sort of cave, using the cinderblocks 3 high with some sort of covering on top, and a small glass window to look in To use less cinderblocks maybe some sort of plank across them could work Raising the water level should be exiting for new opportunities Note I am not a fish owner, but from a building perspective of layout this could work Also, like in other pond builds, some sort of artificial lily pads could work I guess
