That riverside bar. Imagine getting some bands to play whilst enjoying the scenery with a cold one. Great find. Always wanted to go for a peek there.

I did contract work there about 25 years ago. We did full rebuilds on army Unimogs and Land Rovers. I remember drinking in that bar - dollar jugs on Tuesday afternoons, lol!
@urbexgecko2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome Jack! Love the bar and decking area,made for dollar jugs on a nice Tuesday arvo haha. Bit sad seeing it like this mate? Must be pretty weird to see it change so much.
@the1after9092 жыл бұрын
@@urbexgecko sad or weird? not really. I've gotten used to seeing a lot of change around Brisbane. Some changes for the better, some not :) it's was an interesting job in that it took 6 to 12 months to restore one vehicle to army specs. Before that I was a regular mechanic working on 4 or 5 cars a day.
@urbexgecko2 жыл бұрын
Bet you have,fair call! Wow,that's crazy...bit of a change in scenery and turnaround per job haha.

I had the good fortune to be posted there in 1969, RAEME ( Royal Australian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) Northern Command Workshop, Bulimba, later called 1 Mil. District Workshops. The best place in Australia to be posted.. The faded area high above the main door was where there was a RAEME Badge, the Bar is the Sergeants Mess, Sad to see it closed down. Great memories, good mates, fair administration. Couldn't have asked for better. Loved the place.

There's old army barracks in my town been closed for decades ,there's about 15 houses still there that people live in, & 1 big main building out in a paddock on its own abandoned all smashed up inside & there was also about 20 comms towers there but all have been torn down,its cool that it still there & the houses are still used
@RelapsingNerd2 жыл бұрын
I spent some time on that base. The first part you're filming in was the old army side. I remember, because I my car blew it's radiator when I posted in and that's kind of where it stopped near there. Just near the 'waterfront bar' there were actually a few more buildings that were living quarters.
@urbexgecko2 жыл бұрын
Wish I could've seen it before they flattened all the other buildings.

I remember my dad being posted at this barracks, I don't know to much about it, as he was discharged on my 7th birthday after serving 25 yrs in the army and receiving the rank of WO2. I remember it as being an army water transport depot, which barges were docked along with larcs and other boats and equipment, and spending my school holidays down there with my brother and sister eating ration packs and playing hide and seek on and around the boats. That was before the water transport unit was shipped up north somewhere from my understanding. However, before it was at this location, it used to be under the story bridge at the Howard St warfs.

I lived at bulimba barracks whilst patrol boats got refitted at ABA … that is until HMAS Bundaberg caught fire and was destroyed. The gym there was that old it had early doors Arnold pictures up on the walls like from his 20’s , we called it the time warp gym This was circa 2014 , was a FKN cool old base !!!

It was an Army workshop for many years. I was first posted there in 1959. There was also an Army reserve unit in the area (CMF). The Navy came later after moving from further up the River. I understand the area was initially built by the US Army in WWII. Army small ships also moored there but from the video the wharf and slip way appear to be gone now. I am told that it is now being redeveloped for housing.
@craigie60257 ай бұрын
It was the 1st Workshop Battalion. I was posted there 1977 - 1980. This video brings back many memories of a good posting. It was an ARMY base , the NAVY had nothing to do with it to my knowledge.

The rifle range was under the swimming pool, and there was a hospital on the base. Army and navy base. One of the names for the base was SQLG and 1 field base.

So can someone tell me when the close date for this place was? I know the video said he thought maybe 2016 but I've seen on other articles someone say 2006 and another said late 90s.
@Dyylnn Жыл бұрын
do you need permission to enter there? I really want to get my car into there and take some really cool photos but I checked on google maps and its gated off and is owned or protected by a company called X or something (not twitter lol)
@urbexgecko Жыл бұрын
Would be a mint location for a car shoot. You could always try and ask the developer. If that fails, a padlock on the main gate is all that stands between your car and the bando. As for security, they might do random patrols, but there's no cameras or anything like that. Myself and countless people I know have never had any issues there.
