Coyote stalks elderly lady and small dog in city. Caught on tape. Had to stop filming because I thought the coyote was going to attack the lady but she started yelling and waving the stick. Coyote backed off. Location Burnaby B.C. Canada.
I tried to scare off this coyote for 3 weeks (before this video) and called the conservation officer but the coyote kept coming around stalking and growling at kids. Conservation officer told me he could not do anything unless the coyote bites someone. So I captured this footage to prove just how aggressive this coyote was. I did not want to wait until the coyote attack a child. Coyote disappeared after media pick up the story.
Keeping Safe Around Coyotes
If you live in an area that has a coyote population, these items can help you stay safe:
Personal alarm or whistle -- deters the animal and can get help for you if necessary.
Carrying a cell phone for emergencies is also helpful.
Carry a flashlight and an umbrella, both are known to deter coyotes from approaching you (open and close the umbrella and shine the light at them)
Avoid letting your pet off leash to roam freely while you walk. Keep your pet leashed.
Avoid walking during heightened coyote activity times, dusk and dawn.
If you are approached, stretch out your arms and legs to make yourself appear large and make noise. Stay calm. Never run.

Holy cow this lady lives at the end of my street! The dog is a miniature Japanese Akita. who has got to be about 15 years old now. His name is Ito. I saw him today so he survived this encounter, but i'm going to start taking a stick when I take my 17 month old son for walks! Thanks for sharing.

Seriously? If the photographer thought the coyote was about to attack, why did he just keep filming? I once saw a coyote trotting across my pasture. He ran up to a neighbor's dog, and they rubbed noses. Then he trotted off into the woods.

I have a pack of Coyotes across the road and out in the woods. I hear their pups yapping and the howling often. But never have the tried to harm my dogs or myself. But I have been threatened by a pack of violent Raccoons. I punted one like a football as it charged me out near my trash can. Raccoons don't play , I'm fairly certain they had homicidal intentions . They came in masks !

I'm wondering of someone has been feeding this coyote. If it associates people with free food, it would be logical that it would approach people like that. Adults don't have much to worry about from a single coyote, but a small kid might be in danger.

I grew up in the country and I have heard coyotes howling many times at night, and around dusk but only one time did I ever see a pack of them, they stayed out of sight the best they could. they walked along a fence line and I was on the road. they was not aggressive at all but I never trusted them because they were in a pack. seldom ever will they bother a human unless they have rabbid

By the way, many Coyotes/Coywolves have mange. It doesn't mean the animal is sick and perfectly healthy Coyotes roam and hunt during the day. It does NOT mean it they have rabies. If this particular coyote had rabies, it would have attacked without much hesitation instead of curiously following.

Very interesting video and it's very interesting that you've actually has some experience with coyotes. I've been out in the desert before sleeping and have had Coyotes just walk very near my sleeping bag. this was in Henderson Nevada area a lot of coyotes being pushed, hungry, could hear small pups howling really kind of got to me they were hungry as what they were, and kids are going out there and shooting them. When I was a kid I once picked up a dog on the side of the road in Oregon and actually he looked like a coyote. I took him up to my dad's ranch and he's says well just leave him alone and we'll see what he does. Next day he was gone. This wild dingo dog or coyote never was aggressive with me he just got in the car and took him up to the ranch and let him go on the ranch, next day and he was gone after my dad gave him some fresh beef meat. Then I was throwing some arrows with a hunting friend of mine and he shows me a picture of how he shot a coyote in the eye with a 30 ought 6. I never threw arrows with this guy again. I believe in hunting for game to eat and I think that's god-given. But I do not believe in hunting coyotes and just shooting them for fun and sport. when I was in Reno actually met a guy and older guy who had a baby fox and then he was holding it in his arms and he was petting him. And that I see also how many people even shoot foxes for sport. Why would any human being kill an animal other than to live by it.?

Don Robertson is almost right. A young musician of 19 years of age named Taylor Mitchell was attacked while hiking alone and killed by 2 coyotes in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia. It happened in of October of 2009. She was airlifted to Halifax where she died of her wounds. She was a full grown young woman and, unable to defend herself successfully, she lost her life. Imagine the risk that a coyote is to a small child. They do not belong in an urban setting.

She was killed by coywolves, a hybrid of an eastern wolf and coyote. I see western coyotes all the time in my back property. I have never been fearful of them but I do not feed them or attract them to me. Sometimes they move in packs up to 5-6 going up and down the road during the night. We leave them alone and they mostly leave us alone, however they will leap fences to get at small dogs.

I saw a video on coyote behaviour today. It said that they're hard-wired to consider dogs, especially those of similar size, as competitors to their territory so they have a lot of animosity toward them. They drive off or kill foxes and intruding coyotes when they encounter them just like wolves do to coyotes.

People think they are doing something good when feeding wild animals, when in fact that is the last thing they should do. When a wild animal associates people with food the end result is NEVER good. Many of the wildlife conflicts I am called to solve start off because of some uneducated idiot feeds the animal. Many times the only action I can take to protect the public is to put the animal down (breaks my heart most of the time).

Richard Fuller you have no honor hence the name rat. wolves did not go extinct. they went endangered. people do not hunt rats for their fur because they do not have the beauty a wolf does. rats have such large numbers because they breed very fast and have many children they mate with thier brothers and sisters and their siblings' children and even their own parents. wolves mate for life because they ave honor and order. so, vermin, you have been dismissed. go back to the sewers.

Robert Anderson You got that right. I was nearly attacked by a tourist fed bear. He thought I was supposed to provide him with food. I didn't have any, I was a long way from any other people, and I was unarmed. The bear got within 10 feet of me after following me for 150 yards. He knew when he could corner me on that trail. I turned around before I got to that point. But that bear was aggressive because of being fed by humans. BTW bears are exploding in numbers also. Our brilliant government decided we needed more predators without realizing how much food was available for them to eat. Once that food is gone what do all those hungry bears eat? Picnic baskets?

That coyote isn't showing any sign of aggression more signs of being rabid. Idk agree that it has a mild case of the mange but he isn't on the prowl for old women or dogs. Lol people need to educate themselves with animals and behavior's before they make assumptions. He has more than likely been thrown food by a few people and now expects food from everyone to whom he sees. Not a good video headline. Just another example of underthought assumptions

My jack russell was attacked by a coyote a few months ago - yelling, having a stick, and other people around didn't really help; it's almost like the coyote was on a mission and nothing else mattered. Luckily, she was fine and escaped with a very minor scratch on her belly - guess the natural hunting instincts and high energy kicked in and she went for the coyote's neck and legs while retreating each time. The coyote finally ran away. ...to add drama to the story - it did come back like 3 minutes later with 2 or 3 more coyotes (which I've heard it's unusual for them to be in a pack); but we were safe inside the car. My dog was shaking and I could tell by her ears and tail that she was pretty afraid, she also had some blood on her; but after washing her off and taking her to the vet it turned out to probably be from the coyote. Maybe I'm crazy; but I did feel a bit bad for the coyote (but was also happy about my dog not becoming dinner).

There's no reason to feel sorry for a coyote. They are thriving beyond belief. Feel sorry for bobcats if you want to feel sorry for something. They are threatened. All these city people that think they know wildlife mostly don't have a clue. Check out my channel and see what I spend my time doing. I spent countless hours getting the videos I have posted there for the most part. There are a couple that aren't related to wildlife. But see if you can find any wildlife videos on the channels of the coyote lovers. They have no clue what goes on in the real world. They really don't. Do I look like I hate animals? Look at my videos before you answer. Then see how many others in this thread spend ANY time with wildlife. I love being out there. I show things in a positive light that many people hate (like beaver, copperheads, raccoons, etc.). These are just my videos that I have posted. I have lots more not to mention my photos. What are these people doing to help animals? Whining about a poor little coyote threatening an old woman. Talk about callous humans. Maybe someone will return the favor someday and ignore them when they are threatened. That is something I will never understand or accept.

Humane officer view. I live with them in and around my property and yard. They never bother my animals. they do act different if there is a dog in heat. they do look at small animals as prey. There are some cases where they breed with wolves and even fox. Its fur looks to be molting on body but tail could be mange or from a snare trap. there have been rare occasions where one has attempted to play with another animal, but it should be avoided as wild animals are very unpredictable. And every animal and plant has a part in our eco system.

I dig at the den site getting as much of my scent in the area as possible, than turn on a caller with pups in distress. I wait for mom and dad to come running, than chase and stalk them for about 10-15 min. So far 100% success rate with only one service call. I am also armed at the time, and know how to read wild animals. I would not suggest this technique to anyone who does not have experience with wild predators. I worked nights and used to come home in the early morning hours anywhere between 1am to 4am. My mobile home park has been here about 50 years and is right next to the Indian reservation here in E. Scottsdale, AZ Coming home from work a few years ago I saw a pack of coyotes in the park: 2 coyotes and a dog the exact same size. A few weeks later they did a kill either right in back of my place or On My Roof at 2am! It was a hell of a commotion! I saw therm again about a year later but without the dog. It seemed to me the coyotes had gotten a lot larger. So I started doing more research than I had already done. COYWOLVES (coyote and wolf bred in the wild) are real and populations may be growing so be AWARE and Be Prepared and be Careful out there. A quick note to Monkey Vibes: I had never seen or heard of a racoon in AZ. One night as I entered the back door of my house after work, I heard a strange growl. I turned around and there was a racoon growling at me up on it's hind legs. I chewed him out and said "Don't you growl at me!"! He got down off his hind legs and waddled toward the very back of the yard that was a dry creek bed. It flows during heavy rains. Well all of a sudden there was another 'coon' following it, and then another and another. Then there was a little one and they kept coming till I had seen about 15 or 20 of them. Darndest thing I ever saw. Turns out my dumb neighbor had been feeding them. There is a VERY Dangerous Parasite in their Feces. It will kill an old person and turn your kids into vegetables. I don't imagine it's very good for middle aged people either.

Many coyotes DO live on their own for periods of time but, usually not until they've reached maturity. At that time, they either leave on their own in search of a mate and their own territory or are forced out of the pack. Coyotes mate for life and raise their pups together. They usually stay as a family unit until their young are around 2 years old. By then, the pack has the mated pair (parents), yearlings and young pups. At that point, the pack can grow to be as many as 12-14 coyotes. I live in a large farming town in CT, where we are surrounded by a large number of packs. We don't have many of the small Western coyotes anymore. Instead, we have "Coywolves" due to the Eastern coyotes interbreeding with Canadian Gray wolves. They are larger and commonly inherit the same pack mentality as their wolf ancestors. Although, my neighbors and I will often see only 1 or 2 passing through during the day, they are usually scouting for food sources and will hunt in a larger group after dusk.

So many spineless people are scared to death of wild animals. Gary's wife here : as a 44 year old woman in a large park at the foot of Pikes Peak walking (without a leash) my 80 pound Border Collie, a Coyote appeared and my dog put to the chase. I was calling his name and he just kept chasing. Then two other Coyotes came up from behind my dog and started chasing him. This is a common practice of wild coyotes to take down a dog. They work as a team. Well, 44 year old MAMA started chasing them all on foot. I had no fear and no weapon but I am really good and using my fist and can aim for a dogs nose if necessary. My dog finally stopped chasing Coyote number one and turned around to face off with the two following him. He saw me coming and somehow the two coyotes became aware that I was after them.....and they ran away. Yes, there were tree limbs and sticks around and if I needed one I would use one. We have to share this planet with the animals and stop thinking that we are justified in extinguishing life just because it scares us or inconveniences us. The number one group of people I TOTALLY DISRESPECT AND DON'T CARE IF THE WILD ANIMALS RIP THEM APART are the ones that move from the city into the mountains and plains and just because they have high paying jobs and lots of money, they believe that they can move into the natural habitat of animals and have the animals destroyed. We have a large acreage and lots of coyotes, antelope and such cross our land. Whatever.....they are beautiful creatures created by my beautiful Holy Heavenly Father and I thank him for this beautiful earth he created.

Josephine Sehon Oh Good Lord, Josie; now it isn't man that's vile, just the damn white man. Everyone else lived in peace and harmony with nature, and the little song birds came down from the trees to light upon their fingers. Not that there isn't a lot of truth in what you say, as a race Europeans ARE a vicious lot. But different cultures have different strengths, and weaknesses, and as it happens our only two strong points are mechanical ingenuity and being the most efficient killers ever to walk the planet. Don't like that second claim? Look at a globe or map of the world from before WW II. Anyway, you might want to go easy with the Noble Savage stuff, it's actually a little condescending...
@sehonj
@sehonj 9 жыл бұрын
Robert Findley I did not imply that Europeans are worse than all other humans; I merely stated that most of the people native to this continent had cultures that allowed them to integrate themselves with their surroundings more effectively. This lead to a lower population and less advanced technology, but increased sustainability. I admit that I don't know anything about the environmental sustainability of the native cultures of, say, Mongolia, or the entirety of Africa, but as they are entirely unrelated to the current discussion, I feel that such ignorance on my part can hardly be classified as racial or cultural prejudice.

I feel sad for coyotes. We encroach into their territories and then label them a menace. I suggest people who are walking with small pets or small children carry something with them to scare them off with if they live in overlapping territories, be that a stick or a spray of some kind. Just like you might do hiking in the woods. This seems more reasonable than just eradicating them. Most coyotes easily scare off. I would feel more nervous seeing a large dog off a leash.

back in 2010 i was attacked by a small slender coyote. when i saw it i ran to my house and it started chasing me and as soon as i went inside my house it locked its jaws around my right pants leg and jerked my leg left and right. i tried to get it off by pounding on its head but it still had grip, then my dog came in and charged it then my dog started to wrestle it but then it bit the shit out of my dogs belly and they started to wrestle under the table in my dining room and my uncle walked in and saw what was under the table and hes like what the fuck? then he grabbed it by the skin on the back of its neck and threw it away from my dog and it went to my front porch and then my uncle kicked it in the ass very hard and it yelped and ran into the woods i was 11 i never saw it again. we thought it was a fox at first but foxes don't do that unless they have rabies and if it had rabies i would have it too because it bit me. btw im 15 now

if you didn't get a rabies vaccine after being bitten by an aggressive wild animal, your uncle/parents/guardians/etc are total morons and you should probably do the world a favor by not having any children now that you are aware of your defective genetic history. assuming of course, your guardians are blood relatives. i suspect there may be some inbreeding going on.

I am glad to hear you didn't get rabies because that sounds like one of the most aggressive coyotes I have heard about! Tip for people: Never run from a coyote - This will make the coyote give chase and you will tire your self out. Walk, act big (arms out), yell at the coyote, throw rocks at it and pick up anything like a tree branch to defend your self. Most coyotes fear humans when you have something in your hands (tree branch, umbrella, hockey stick.)

"Bad idea... walk across the street." Showing fear is the last thing you want to do in that situation. That only encourages the coyote to hang around the neighborhood and wait for opportunities (including children). The best thing to do is not wait to be attacked, but go after the coyote (without abandoning the dog). Including screaming at it, and beating the coyote upside the fucking head if it gets within range, which it probably wouldn't, if faced with a person who was angry and strong enough to do something about it. If the dog is aggressive and willing to back up its owner, that's even better, especially if it's under voice control and can be called back if it takes off after the coyote (to avoid a possible ambush, etc). If every adult who saw it went after it, instead of being cowards, and let the coyote know they were intent on injuring it, that would be the best chance of driving this coyote out of the neighborhood and back to the wild so it wouldn't have to be shot. No offense, but standing there filming it from a distance didn't help the woman, and it didn't do anything to get rid of the coyote either. Dogs/coyotes aren't stupid, and if people are more afraid of them than vice versa, it only makes them bolder and encourages what we're seeing here. She had more balls than you do, grow a set!! A single coyote cannot kill an able bodied man, he should be more afraid of you than you are of him!!

OK...I'm sorry, but this woman is not very bright. She's walking her dog, sees the coyote...and continues to walk him right past. If you see a coyote the best thing to do is to SCREAM/YELL as LOUD as you can and wave your arms, making yourself look bigger. We had one in the backyard once at 11 AM when our cat was also outside and my mother and I started screaming--he heard us even though our windows were closed and bolted and ran. Last night a pack of them in the neighborhood woke me up at 4:15 AM with their bloodcurdling screeching and howling; I opened my bedroom window and screamed and they took off immediately.

Where I live one can walk on a trail and see coyotes. If I am without my medium size dog I don't fear them. They stop-look and amble away. There has never been a coyote attack on a human up here in the mountains where I live. I would never think of screaming but if they hang around my back property too long lounging around and looking TOO at ease, I clap my hands loudly and they take off. The younger ones run and the older ones amble away after giving me a dismissive look.

I hunt coyotes. They are very smart, can smell and hear you for a very long way. Most coyote hunters need to use a scope, they are that hard to approach. You SHOULD never see them. A coyote you see out in the open in broad daylight in your neighborhood is hyper aggressive and most likely HUNTING. The "leave him alone" crew is stupid, knows nothing about coyotes.....This neighborhood is a hunting ground for this critter. He needs to be put down. Just a matter of time before it latches on to a 3 year old ....
@905legends
@905legends 7 жыл бұрын
Do you blame them? Human expansion is forcing them to hunt in cities, and most of the time they go for small prey like squirrels. If you really fear for your 3 year old child then open your tunnel vision eyes and keep an eye out on your loved ones.

+Alex Young Yeah "relocate" that animal to where I live. Thanks for nothing. We have an incredible number of coyotes already. For decades I've been hearing packs of them running at night. Yesterday morning there were 2 in my yard digging up moles. I have 2 cats and a dog. I wonder how long it will be before those coyotes decide my pets will make a decent meal. Most of the time my animals are in the house but not always. This is the country. They go outside when nature calls if you get my drift.
@nothingzavailable
@nothingzavailable 9 жыл бұрын
Well were else are we going to relocate them if we can't put them in your backyard?!? What makes you think that this is where animal control would bring them? By the way if you have pets and live in an area with wildlife It's certainly YOU who decided to move there, YOU who came second, and YOU who should be in charge of keeping your pets safe.

"I'm a nature lover but this animal should be put down, he's a threat..." is the reason why your video has so many dislikes. The coyote is curious and hungry, and it's a cruel world to live in for him, whereas we humans have everything given to us. He shouldn't be killed for trying to survive, he's not stalking and hunting just for kicks, like humans do. WE ARE the threats, and if you have an issue with 1 coyote, then call someone to move him out into the wild somewhere else to survive.
