I feel you on the whole 'Winter is perfect for reading Russian fiction' thing. I have a couple of Russian historical fiction books that I read last year that I kinda want to read again this year just because it fits. I am not sure if you like historical fiction, but the books are The Winter Palace: A Novel of Catherine the Great by Eva Stachniak and Witches of St. Petersburg by Imogen Edwards-Jones. But I like a lot of the books that you mentioned and hopefully, I can read them this winter season!

If you liked Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver, just making sure you know about her other stand alone fairy tale retelling, Uprooted. And if you like these books, Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth reads in a similar style. It's a retelling of Rapunzel.

I think you can do little women in one day! That edition has quite large font but as a regular trade paperback its only about 300ish pages. It does only have book 1 in it though (some have 1 and 2 in one) and I'm not sure if the movie is based only on book 1 or not as lots of people consider 1&2 together as the first book. I actually found goodreads because of little women! I was so confused about what I had and hadn't read!!

ah i love "little monsters" by kara thomas. it's the best thriller for me to read during the winter because while it's definitely not a light read, the author does such a good job with setting the cold atmosphere and cleverly using it as an advantage to make the plot more interesting. the different timelines are also a major bonus, sometimes a hit or miss depending on the person reading it, but i think without it, it wouldn't have made this novel as appealing as it was to me so just a small rec from me if you're ever interested
@tanyaball12204 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh, just got the Irish cold brew from Sbux off your last rec and it is SO SO good!! Trying to think of some winters recs: Misery (horror) One by One (suspense) Ones that I am ABOUT to read, but can’t rec yet: Christmas Dinner of Souls (MG) Link by Link: A Haunted Anthology (YA) The Bleak House (classic) I’ll try and think of more once the caffeine hits! I absolutely love your recommendations. Growing up CS Lewis was my favorite author. Love, love, love the chronicles of Narnia. So I have a question. I am teaching 6-8th grade students . The population of my students is a low incidence classroom of diverse learners. What would you recommend as far as a Christmas feel good, humor and filled with sweetness and kindness . Needs to be able to read in a week. They are able to listen for 10-15 min. Around 100-120 pages. Simple language and plot, high interest to this age group. Any suggestions? I am struggling to find a book. Usually the ones I find are picture books at a primary level. But they are starting to figure out those are as they call it”baby books”.

As far as winter atmospheric books go I really liked Winterwood, I read in in one sitting! 🥶 And, although it starts in summer and goes into winter, a super cozy book is The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, it's adorable 🥰 Spinning Silver and Uproot are on my TBR but I'm afraid, they're quite long and I've read many negative reviews about them 😓
@Selenite112 жыл бұрын
If you like magic or fairytales you cannot go wrong with Uprooted and Spinning silver.
@MeronPan42 жыл бұрын
@@Selenite11 I actually started to read Uprooted last year, but I dnf'd it. Unfortunately I didn't connect with the characters and it's actually the first book I couldn't finish 😢 I was really disappointed because I had high hopes.. Maybe I'm too old and I've grown out of these tropes, idk 😢😢 Some I really liked were Ninth House and The Priory of the Orange Tree, so if you have any other recommendations I'm open to them!

Girls Made of Snow and Glass is only one and a half books down on my reading list. And I love you said of Castle in the Clouds - "There's a little bit of a murder mystery happening..." I mean, what's a little bit of a murder? Someone is almost dead? Only a little bit dead? LOL I'm looking forward to Gregory Maguire's new book too, but I'm a bit surprised to hear you say it's been described as whimsical. I love his books but his stories always seem to be a bit..... atmospherically gloomy? And speaking of winter tales set in New York, have you read Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin? It's 748 pages, so you might want to plan ahead to read it next year, but it's so oddly beautiful. There's also a movie.
