Cozy Log Cabin- How I built it for less than $500.

This simple, but cozy bush cabin was constructed in my spare time, and was completed in 8 months. My youth group, and several people from my church were a huge help. I wouldn't have been able to complete it in time without them.
I am aware that 8 months isn't necessarily a fast building time, but keep in mind: this cabin is somewhat isolated, no machinery was used, all the logs and materials had to be carried on our shoulders, I often worked alone and in at least 3 feet of snow, I built this in my spare time when I wasn't working 50+ hours at my jobs, or spending time with my family. And any construction project takes longer when it's out in the bush.
Some people have noticed that I have a gas can in the corner of the cabin next to the stove. Obviously it is dangerous to keep a gas can near a running stove. The only reason why the gas can is there, is because I temporarily put it there for filming. The stove was off, and as soon as I was done filming, I returned the gas can back to where it belonged; outside.
Of course there are things that I can, and could have done, to make sure this cabin lasts 100+ years:
1- The logs could have been debarked before I used them.
2- In the future I can jack the cabin up and put it on footings so that the logs will be kept off the ground.
3- In the future I can put a metal roof on, to replace the tarp.
So why didn't I just do the above 3 things right away? I was under a strict time & budget constraint. I only had $500 and I had exactly 8 months to complete the cabin (it's a long story). Although I had a lot of people who helped on various occasions, I worked alone most of the time, often in temperatures of -30, with only a chainsaw, an axe, and my arms. Although I had to take a couple of shortcuts (because of my constraints), I do not regret any decision I made in the cabin's construction. If I chose to build the cabin exactly the way I wanted it to be built, I wouldn't have been able to build it at all. In the future, I plan to build a bigger log home. And when I do, I will be sure to take the time to build the cabin exactly the way it needs to be built.
The cabin cost only $500 to build. Most the the money went into the lumber that I put into the roof. As for the items that were donated, all of them were scrap to begin with. That means the donated items were worth $0, and they only took on value when I was able to make use of them.
The stove was donated because I had a friend who had it sitting in his scrap pile and he knew I could probably use it.
A farmer friend I knew told me that he had a bunch of thrown-out windows in a garbage pile in his back field. He said that if I could dig them out of the snow, I could have them.
The door was a coffee table that another friend made, but he was going to throw it out because the varnish didn't go on properly. So I took it off his hands.
My point is, that even though the above items were donated, they were salvaged items that were going to be thrown out anyway. This is another reason why I was able to keep my costs down. Because I was able to take other people's garbage, and make them into something useful.
I was given permission to build this cabin on a privately owned bush lot.
Cabin details:
I have no previous experience in construction, only a passion to learn and build.
The cabin is 10'x10'. While the roof section is 11'x16'
It has 52 logs, approximately 25 inches in circumference at the base. I left them with the bark on.
It only cost me $15 worth of gas, and $30 worth of oil to build the entire cabin with my chainsaw.
The floor is set on 9 patio stones, with 2"x4"s for support, and 2.25" thick rough-cut Poplar floor boards on top.
I made square notches in the logs, which I found to be a sturdy way to fit the logs together.
We didn't use any machinery (except for a chainsaw). Just good ol' fashioned man power.
I used a heavy-duty tarp to cover the roof.
To fill the gaps between the logs I used brown-coloured insulation. Not the best way to fill the gaps, but it's certainly cheap, quick, and efficient.
Since the cabin is small, I didn't place it on any footings. The logs are sitting directly on the level ground. I'll see in the years to come, how well the cabin holds up. But it's already lasted through a whole winter and spring without any problems.

So many unnecessarily negative comments. You did it with a youth group, for less than 500 dollars, and with very little previous experience yourself, right? I say very well done indeed. You should ignore the arm-chair experts making comments they are unlikely to be able to support in the real world. So what if it lasts only a few years, if that turns out the be the case. Well done and thanks for sharing the video.

I’ve watched your channel from the start. 9 years. I doodle house plans to relax, and when I saw this video I was really into cabin floor plans, and this made my imagination run wild! I had only been on the internet a few years at the time. I see the like I gave the video disappeared, so I clicked like again. Maybe the likes are erased when the device they were made on permanently crashes. Anyway, got to like your video 2x! I’ll miss seeing you working with your dad. God bless him and may he enjoy Heaven. I’m guessing he is up there building a cabin and getting it ready for when the whole family is Home together again. I loved seeing this cabin. God bless. Take care.

I am really struck from what you did. this remember me when I was younger, but you were surely more determined brave and strong to do such a thing in your spare time after work (it's quite hard even to believe!). and all these people criticizing this and that, in most (not all) I feel the smell of envy from a mile away, in this boring clarification of details, we've all seen, "wow I've noticed that the welds of the stove are terrifying"... lol ... another thing that amazes me is how you take all the compliments and you do not get scratched by this negativity that many people, unable to do much more than chat (and suck), pour over who has the courage to embark on bold projects, even if not exact on everything. who cares, rock on!

I just ask myself, seriously, not rhetorical, in front of some difficulties of some particular projects, at the beginning before starting: at the end it would be better with a non perfect all thing, or without it at all. mostly I go for the first choice but why not, even the second, not for lack of belief in myself but because I think the world is already full of inutile expensive horrible things. and putting in one more with my name on it was not courage at all, but too much belief in yourself that is the first step to manic of greatness.

Even though this was 2 years ago, I suggest putting a trapdoor on the floor so you can store some kind of water tank under the flooring for fresh water, and put a bucket on the roof and some kind of output for a filtration system under the bucket connecting the water tank with a plastic tube or hose, so that you can filtrate rain water and boil it on the stove. You should also experiment using a solar panel, to put on the roof so that if you decide to, you can use an electric stove and recharge your devices, at the same time providing electricity to the lanterns that you use. You should also put some kind of curtain or blinds on the windows and window on the door. Also put up a rack like some plastic hooks on the walls/logs so you can hang up your clothes, etc. . And finally if you can, double layer the windows with another layer of plexi... Whatever you call it glass, so that the cold doesn't go through the windows. If you choose to expand the cabin, make a storage room for food and wood... Idk, flint and steel, etc. and an outhouse. Actually, now that you think about it, that place would make a really good zombie apocalypse shelter... But that's just a thought... And seeds if you wanted to farm.

I absolutely love it brothers! You guys all seem to be fairly young & claiming it took 8 months to build your little fortress, that alone says so much that idle hands can always find something "constructive" to do. I'm starting in April myself to build me a small getaway on a 20 acre or so parcel I own that has an old home on it that's partially collapsed. It's got the best rough sewn lumber in it imaginable with some of it exposed to the elements for decades & is still strong as it can be. Mine's going to be a tad more unorthodox than yours because I'm going to mix a lot of architectural kinks in mine but I got some cool little ideas from what you did. That small storage area you guys have in the loft will be perfect for a prone type shooting area if I decide to take a deer in the morning or dusk with just a small flip up opening to give me perfect view a hundred or so yards away at normal tree stand height without spooking the deer. A question though,, does the contrived heater you guys built smell badly burning the old motor oil? This would be a good backup idea to my fireplace if it doesn't give the place the odor of burned oil. I wasn't necessarily going to go the loft route but I'm thinking a covered porch area to the rear of my cabin would give me some really great reading or resting time with a hammock stretched out in the summertime & throw me a mosquito net up. I was smiling while I was watching the progression of your getaway. People just don't realize how things like this could help the youth of our nation stretch their thinking capacity while giving them a sense of self worth doing such projects. When I think of the billions wasted by our gov't "giving people things" when they could instead reinforce positive actions through voluntary efforts to organize kids to be leaders instead of loafers! Great job guys,, a big thumbs up to ya!!

Ro'ber Harpane' Thanks for commenting Ro'ber! Sounds like you've got the makings of a great getaway building. To answer your question about the oil heater, it actually doesn't smell at all. It usually burns hot enough that barely any smoke comes out of the chimney. I'd recommend a commercially built one though for safety reasons.

You want to seal the joins with a straw/hay + Mud mortar. Nail some blankets to the roof for insulation. Seal the gaps in the doors to prevent the cold air being drawn in by the escaping heat. The stove pipe can be redirected and ducted around the floor before venting out or a radiator on a wall. A PVC Half Pipe to collect water and run through a filter to collect debris from fallen leaves before run into a sink inside. If the floor is below ground level you might get flooded from rain and snow melt. You would want to seal the whole cabin with pitch, tar or resin. Solar panels, deep cycle batteries and an inverter will give you power for lighting and small appliances, lap top, lcd tv, fan (This can also help in cold weather to circulate the warm air from the top of the cabin down. Great work, Would be nice to do.

I especially appreciated that the church youth group and other volunteers came together to make it happen. The testament of good ppl coming together to make wonderful memories and a lasting cabin to show for it is the big message. I really liked and is the first used oil drip stove system that I have seen and so I took that away from your video. I also liked the even extra crawl space second loft. not to mention that will keep heat lower to main living space and to first sleeping loft, etc.

I think this is one of the coolest projects I have seen in a while. I am a pastor now and I am planning a camping trip this spring with my youth group. I have been part of youth camping trips with other youth ministries in the past and they were very well received. I was also privileged to be involved in these type of retreats when I was a teen. I will add one thought, as a former contractor, see if you can enlist a local contractor to add his input and possibly even surplus material. I would also have your local fire dept inspect any heating system. My father and uncle both had homes catch fire from improperly installed wood burners. Congratulations on all your hard work. I love your creativity! Blessings on your ministry!

It's neat for sure! With a budget of 500 dollars, you stretched that money a long way to make something completely live-able. Is it without issue? No - but you'd be hard pressed to get a shed for the money. It is possible to get the things that you got for free, people are tearing out old windows all the time, and every year when students move out furniture is thrown out onto the curb as students make transitions. The more you're willing to spend in sweat equity, the more you can overall save in costs (As long as you aren't paying yourself) and being able to use local trees for the bulk of the structure really helps (Something that not everyone would have potential access to). Though, this video isn't really "How you can build a 500 dollar cabin" It's how he build one.

As far as ventilation goes, it's the same as a wood stove. The fire is enclosed in the stove, and it vents out through the chimney.

Great job, yes you'll have problems with the bark left on the logs. Insects and eventually peeling off as it dries. Doesn't look like you put any kind of foundation underneath the cabin?, so the bottom sill logs are going to rot out. Deck pier blocks are inexpensive and gets your wood off the ground or 6 inch Sonotubes work great as piers using bags of premixed concrete that you can find at any big market DIY/hardware store. I like your oil fed heat/burner. Do you have a video on that? Insulate the roof and a few minor upgrades and you have a very livable abode. Very well done, thanks for sharing.

Thanks NWHiker. You made some very good suggestions. I'll be moving the cabin this summer, so it will give me a chance to peel the logs and get some proper footings underneath. I don't have a video for the waste oil stove yet, but it's coming!

Yes I did. The local building code says that you don't need a permit for anything that is 10'x10' and smaller. This is why I built the cabin exactly 10'x10'.

I don't know the regulation that California has, so I couldn't say. They could be a little more strict, or they could be more relaxed about it. Let's hope it's the latter. Getting a permit is a pain.

I think it is awesome that you went for it with only the experience on resources you had. It shows great motivation, creativity, and intelligence. It was a learning experience for you and those who helped. And the feedback (even negative) will help you learn and grow. You obviously never made yourself out to be an expert in the matter and never said this was the way everyone should build a cabin. So don't even worry about anyone passing judgment on here. So many (probably a lot of the people complaining) wouldn't have the guts to take a project like that on. People like to criticize and point the finger, but many of them aren't experts in the first place. For the people who are experts, some constructive criticism should always be welcome if it is done in a well intended manner. Anyway, I think the cabin is cute. I like that you were creative with the front gable area and the lock. The door was creative as well. Great job re purposing old materials too. So many people just throw stuff away that is still totally useful. Kudos to you!

You can still peel the logs after it is built. Get a plane and go after it. You can also jack up the floor with a bottle jack and timbers and put a flagstone or equivalent perimeter foundation. A floor can be built on an interior ledger board attached to the wall. You can make lime stucco chinking to fill in the logs.

For never having done this before, you guys did a great job! Do those logs insulate pretty well? Have you spent the night in it on a REALLY cold day/night? I've been toying with the idea of making a house that is 12'x12'x12' with everything designed to be multipurpose and/or foldaway (staircase to the upper loft folds into the wall when not in use; all furniture folds into the floor or wall). I would also use solar panels with battery storage. I think I could do the whole thing for under $5000 and ZERO mortgage! JW3HH

I saw a tiny home with a similar roof. For insulation, you could use old blankets, sleeping bags, foam, etc. held in place against the roof with chicken wire attached to the studs. Better than nothing, seems like you'd lose a lot of heat without any, tho. Great job, church families are the best.

I would, but saw to many flaws. Give it ten years before it is unsafe. I am being generous here. I know a little about this. My mother just spent $150,000 to repair her log lodge. This was after 18 years and better constructed.

I don't think he was looking to retire in it but rather stay in it for short periods. Like on summer break. He did a great job for what it is! As your mother's log lodge proves, nothing is perfect and meant to last forever.

John Roberts Agreed, this id not a house. Agreed, nothing lasts for ever. This was built for and by the kids. Teach them how to do it right. First, never have wood to ground contact. Second, debark the logs. Third have some sort of foundation.to protect against frost heave. Fourth, this is where my dad went wrong, larger soffits. Fifth, seal the end grain of the logs. I doubt that this thing will last 5 years. What happens if this thing collapses and one or more get hurt or killed? What about all the waste time in building this killer. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

Also agree that anything worth doing is worth doing right. Edison failed around a thousand times before he made the light the right way. When reminded of this fact he said "I learned a thousand ways NOT to make the light!" We learn from mistakes and as we get older they are lessons learned.. My guess is that most of these kids were better off learning how not to make a log cabin than getting high in their moms basement and then going out doing something else stupid. The Pro's & Con's to this are many. :)
