Shipping container conversions' playlist: • Shipping container homes
Kam Kasravi and Connie Dewitt wanted a modern cabin that wouldn't disrupt the Redwoods on their property. First, they considered prefabs, but quickly realized they wouldn't fit up the narrow road to their land in the Santa Cruz mountains. So they convinced their friend, architect David Fenster, to design them a home made from shipping containers.
Built from recycled cargo containers hand-picked from the Port of Oakland, Six Oaks was built around the footprint of the land. The containers were building blocks that were cut and stacked to fit between Redwoods along with a steep grade.
While the home was assembled in 6 hours, it took nearly a year to finish the interior since so much of it was custom. The unique materials meant some unique requirements: instead of carpenters, they used welders; a commercial roofer had to be hired, etc.
According to Connie, it wasn't "the cheapest way to build", but It cost about $50 per square foot less than a more conventional custom home.
They didn't aim to build an extreme home, but the couple feels confident their home will hold up well under extreme conditions- i.e. falling trees, forest fires. Connie jokes that if a tree does fall on the home, "it will get a little dent and we'll call the auto body shop to fix the house".

Recycled? You say that as if they turned trash into treasure. They didn't Salvage anything. If they didn't buy the containers someone else would have.

There are several factors in creating an amazing design. One place I discovered which succeeds in merging these is the Magic Container Plans (check it out on google) without a doubt the most helpful course that I have ever seen. look at this great resource.

Very nice job. I live in a home built from 2 40' containers side x side with a 16x16 living room 2 8x10 bedrooms and 8x12 bathroom and kitchen built myself central hvac w heat pump and I love it. Best thing is it was paid for when I sat them on the ground! My floor is still exposed also and 1 wall in my kitchen. Been living in mine for nearly 5 yrs now.

Nice to hear from another person who DID it instead of masturbating on the internet! I have two 40" High Cubes as my machine/welding shop and love it. A separate 40 with doors on each end is my motorcycle garage. If you ever need to seal external pipes/conduit/etc try 3M 5200 marine sealant. It beats the hell out of silicone because it's designed for thru-hull boat use. Good for you! My example got two of my bros into containers. We made a sweet machine shop in one's High Cube, and the other in in progress but because he's using containers he can store his hot rods out of the weather in the meantime.

Don't let the negative trolls get you down. Some people have absolutely nothing nice to say. I Absolutely love the design. Was thinking about this 3 winters back how awesome it would be to use Seacarts in a home design. My husband looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned it. We do real estate development and some rehab properties. Was just talking to my kids the other day about the idea. How awesome it was to come across the finished project. Now I have something to show him how great an idea it is. Absolutely fabulous, thank you!

Great job on the design. I have worked with several container conversion projects for the past fifteen years. One of the biggest challenges is insulation. As you mentioned you do not want to sacrifice space. Yes, closed cell foam is an excellent choice however it offers only R6 per inch. Many of our customers live in hot or cold climates that requires better thermal control without sacrificing valuable space. We are able to meet their needs by combining the closed cell foam with our ceramic insulation coatings. The ceramics do not absorb heat like the foam does. The result is a much more effective insulation system that will better contain heat in the cold winter climate and more effectively block heat transfer during the warm or hot summer. The advantages of using our ceramic insulation coatings is that you can enhance your existing system without deconstructing simply by coating over the surfaces that face the heat.
@brenrem
@brenrem 5 жыл бұрын
The closed cell foam is the best to prevent condensation and the damage that comes with it over time. If it's cold outside and warm inside you're going to get a condensation build up and regular insulation is just going to absorb it, and over time it's going to cause mold. And closed cell has a higher R factor than some of the regular insulation. If you are in a cooler climate like I am with winters in Canada, the closed cell foam and then a vapor barrier on top would prevent future problems with condensation build up.

I would think that, coating the outside with a double wall, so you don't have to take away from inside dimensions would be a solve, outside ureithain 2 component insulation, covered in porciline epoxy sealant, just an idea !

Cool house. But the total cost was noticeably absent, and I'm guessing that many small house fans, like myself, are tiring of seeing very wealthy homeowners showing off their small, forward-thinking homes that have prices well out of reach of most people. That's one reason why I stopped subscribing to Dwell--the vast majority of homes showcased simply aren't affordable.

Each 20 x 8 ft container is 160 square feet. Therefore 6 containers are 960 square feet. the cost is about 50 dollars per square foot, so the price is 48,000 dollars. This does not include the price of the land. If you have to insulate it will cost extra.

UG-RailTrance You could get them for USD 2.000 delivered, However, you will making a BIG mistake! First, Those containers are 20 years old are damaged (dented) and rusty. Containers for Housing must be the one-trip kind or nearly new. Second. and most IMPORTANT! The containers need to be High Cube or HQ. Why? HQ containers are ONE foot higher and also rare and hard to find and as a result more expensive when new (or one-trip containers). That ONE foot of extra height makes all the difference when it comes to the look and feel of the house you are building .... and is worth the extra cash. Best to get 40-foot HQ containers and cut them in half (1/2) if you have to do so .... to save on the cost.

Sadly most of the big ones are gone as the logging companies clear cut them. I got a chance to live in them a bit north of this video. Highly recommend it. There are some areas where you can live among the gaint ones, but not many. Driving among them is awesome.

Maybe the government should look into placing these train cars out there for the homeless population rather than spend billions on affordable housing their not interested in . The majority of homeless folk like the idea of being alone and separate from the norm. . I think this would make great shelter for hobo camps.

5:36 if those containers are from the late 70´s and the working life of the container is about 20 years... those do look really good to have about 40+ years. I wonder from where they get their water and heat/electricity because such kind of metal can get very cold. And the sound from the rain and any animal walking on the roof I am sure it must be kind of loud ... and maybe surprisingly scary if it happens to wake you up during the night.

I would recommend "Food-Grade" Containers as more Safer and still Affordable. I know shipping containers well from work, they move all kinds of goods including Toxic chemicals who may spill down in transit, I dont recommend using old shipping containers as homes/living quarters, it may cause hard to explain negative health effects over time. You certainly dont want to walk barefeet on that exposed floor of a 20 year old container, chemicals can seep into the wooden floorplates even fuse with the paint, its best to replace or cover the floor, or at the very least put some thick layer of coat. Also rust is a big problem with old containers, they usually get holes with time, best to sandblast it away repair the holes and coat it again. If you see a long downward line of rust after drops running down the side on the inside of a container then there is usually a hidden rust hole at the top of it. Ideally buying new/newish containers is safest for the health, unless you plan on using them just for storage or a workshop etc, as in not living in them. Exceptions: there are older/cheaper but still more safer than not containers around called "Food-Grade" containers, they are normal containers that have been selected by acompany to only carry foodgrade items, and Should not have at any time carried dangerous and/or toxic chemicals if correct company procedures are being followed. There are also different type containers called Bulk-Containers, they are usually 20 feet and carry animal feed etc back and forth their entire livetime, they usually have 3 small openings ontop and one down at the back. There are 3 age/quality classes I know of. VG - Very Good, G - Good and U - Usable. Buying a Foodgrade container in Good quality/class may be the best of both worlds if you value safety but also want to be economic, as they are not as expensive as a new one, not as cheap as a really old one but not in as potentially bad shape or unhealthy either.

Wow, what a wonderful comment full of great advice! (Non ironical) I'm loving the tiny house trend but am rather leaning towards shipping containers. Plenty around in the harbour in my city! It's not feasible for me to own a shipping container home quite yet, but I'm really happy to get some info on them so I can dream. I'm also dreaming of becoming a interior / project designer so your comment is doubly helpful to me. :)

Is the idea behind using containers to have an affordable living space...this is wonder full if you have gobs of money to invest in it...but the main idea is an alternative home for those who don't want a mortgage. It seems more like some yuppy style showpiece...some young couple just out of college could never afford it...but it is a cool place!! I would live there or anywhere there is woods...

Ben dover they used 5 containers here. Good containers cost $3000. That’s $15000 on 90% of the materials & everything is pre cut & fabricated so there are no labour costs & company installs & delivers itself. You could build it for less then 75k

During George Bush II era, he lightened the restrictions on metal recycling. Enabling metal taken from nuclear plants(below a certain radiation amount) to go into the general recycle system. As mentioned in this clip, these are older containers. But for newer containers I'd look at them with a Geiger counter.

I'm assuming this costed a fortune... since these are the kind of people that can afford an architect and only use it as a vacation home. Not building it yourself will cost a fortune... plus, builders will know that you're the kind of person who can afford it, so they'll overcharge you out the ass.

Iron is a great thermal conductor. So basically these people are living in a single layer of closed cell foam. In the winter they will regret this design decision. Shipping containers do not have enough interior space for the insulation needed in most regions of the world.

Whats with all the quiping about cost......if your willing to get your hands dirty its a very cheap option. Iam planing a 3-4 bedroom thats going to cost aprox 10-15k pounds to build including pv solar. Buy a cheap welder angle grinder 200-300 pound 3-4 contaners 250-2500pound each. Go for miss mesured double glazzeing units. Pallet wood flooring (looks great once sanded up) kicthen units can be had cheaply if you shop around. This is very easly a cheap option. The only real expense is the land
