I love your tiny cottage, I am going to build one off grid in Scotland on some land my sister and I have. I was happy to learn that the presenter guy is 6'4" because I am 6' and I was worrying about all the people who have tiny houses maybe being tiny people. Well that's one worry put to rest and also the composting toilet worries Lol! This has been really informative because it is more like what I want and it looks so spacious. I'm really excited about getting mine done now..However we can build whatever we want because it is ex forestry and we have millions of sitka spruce left in the areas that haven't been replanted with indigenous broadleaf trees. So mine will be like yours but more like a log cabin if you can envisage that. I think the main difference is that mine won't be on wheels but built on those concrete thingies to raise it off the ground because that makes it a lot warmer in my experience (I used to rent a cottage that was wood framed and it was built off the ground and it's solid fuel open fire range thing that also heated the water was incredible it heated the whole house except my bedroom which had its own fireplace...like a mini fireplace. I really enjoy these videos and wish you lots of happiness in your tiny cottage xx

raleighman3000 I'm in the middle of a pretty thick forest and have too much to do to sit looking out a window..I have horses, orphaned foxes to reintroduce, lots of other animals 200 hectares of woodland to oversee and maintain, personally I think that having a cottage in Scotland and a flat in London is pretty much as good as you can get...the best of both worlds so to speak (just cos I choose to go off grid in Scotland doesn't mean my partner is giving up his job and our flat...you're a pretty depressing sounding person. ...I don't know what your experience of Scotland is but I really like the Highlands and always have. I also hillwalk, rockclimb and stuff like that. ..you have to make your own entertainment, if you are the type that sits forlornly (Personally I have no time for moaning minnies like you) then that's fine. .don't project your shortcomings on others!
@GUITARTIME20248 жыл бұрын
+Anne Anderson (Foxiepaws) all good, but both your locations are generally grey and rainy. sorry but many people could not handle that. glad your psychology is different but i need to see sun outside.
@Foxiepawstotti8 жыл бұрын
raleighman3000 Last two times I was up, the weather was better than London. .nice hot, sunny but not humid....it's not usually grey...OK in winter it can be bloody cold but the snow never stops the busses etc. The trains have to stop if it gets colder than -25°C because the points freeze. But even in winter we get a lot of sunshine. .I don't have many grey nasty days when thinking about my youth in Aberdeenshire. ..maybe in Aberdeen it can be a bit depressing but once you get inland it's much sunnier, Aberdeen has that problem with fog if you get nice weather so it would give people the impression that it's always grey when in fact that isn't true. I can't remember the last time I was up there (from May to September) when it wasn't sunny.
@ExtraordinaryLiving8 жыл бұрын
+Anne Anderson (Foxiepaws) Your Scotland locale sounds quite lovely to me. I actually love grey, cloudy weather, and rain is alright as long as I don't have to go out and get wet (or go out, get wet, and not have to worry about looking good. ;) ) I also love fog ... foggy scenes are beautiful! Contrary to most regular folks, I dislike the sun (find it annoyingly glaring and hot ... don't like the feeling of being cooked), I like cooler/colder temperatures. Snow is *BEAUTIFUL* when it is clean and white ... not the filthy black slush one gets in the cities. I don't find the presence of these natural elemental characteristics depressing or forlorn at all ... in fact, I feel comfortable, light, and peacefully joyful whenever we have one of these grey, cloudy, overcast, breezy/windy, dry days (yup, we don't get too many of this kind of days in NYC.) +raleighman3000 Different stroke for different folks! ;)

I love the spring grass, celery green of the exterior. It matches the fresh and calming energy of its occupants. I have similar open shelves in my kitchen and the previous occupants put nails in the side and stretched Bungee cords across them so a stray elbow wouldn't knock things off. Perhaps my favorite feature is the stairs. In the couple of years I've been gathering tiny home knowledge, nobody with stairs has expressed regret or second thoughts: they come in handy and make access much easier. There's a lot of timber inside, but painting the walls and cabinets keeps it from looking like a lumber yard.

She's absolutely right at the end, I wish I'd known about this kind of building right out of school. Probably because I lived in trailer parks as a kid, it felt like it would be a step "backwards"... but in the years since, I've paid a lot of rent and you never end up with anything to show for that. Putting that money into getting a piece of land and building something small (to keep, or a stepping stone to something bigger) would have set me up by now. When you're young and especially for people who are single and have no pets (and haven't accumulated a lot of "stuff" yet), if you can squirrel away enough to get started, it's really a great way to move your life forward. If you're just working to spend all your money on rent, it just feels like you're waiting for real life to start. And I would imagine building your own space makes you feel so much more connected and "at home" than just finding whatever apartment you can in your price range and fitting yourself and your life into it. Little parcels of land, too small for a full-size house, are really cheap in lots of countries (especially if you can be "off-grid"), maybe a few thousand dollars, maybe even less out in the country. I've seen that in the US, Canada, NZ, UK, etc. It's definitely a good time for tiny house builders. Anyone interested in that should go for it! (with the appropriate planning obviously) At my age, married, with a few pets, we're looking for a little more space than a Tiny House, but we're about to do a big move for work, and we're ready to start looking for a piece of land as soon as we get there. I can't wait to start building something that's really ours.
@mariebernier30764 жыл бұрын
Yes, so many points in your post are important issues in housing and the way our culture perceives what is appropriate, looks down on, would never consider. I grew up coal mining Midwest, poor and rural area. Many people in trailers long term. There is so much land, beautiful land, and so many alternatives for people to use as viable housing models - rammed earth, straw bale, made from cheap locally available materials which are in harmony with the area and proven to be lasting, energy efficient structures. You may need something a little larger than a tiny house but the beauty is that once you explore alternatives, these forms allow you to add space as you go. The American standard of a big, trimmed out 'finished' home filled with extra feature is so restrictive and dated. I'd love to construct a geodesic dome house and add rooms later but dream of living in a winterized yurt in all 4 seasons. So LITTLE to go to the landfill when you're finished. Just like a VW Beetle, simple, elegant, functional design and mostly recyclable!

I thought of watching again Bryce’s first tiny house tour while having coffee.🙂 It’s funny that the background music automatically played in my head the moment Bryce entered the house.😅 I also took the initiative to say to the owners of the house that “I love what they did on the outside and I can’t wait to see what’s inside. What a fun energetic couple. I get the feeling they are comfortable with each other and Bryce off camera. A sign of a good host, Which is always a great dynamic, until the trollers and idiots start to make comments. Even here, on something that has no relationship to anything other than better living and life sustained, the comments come to lead to a negative direction. I guess we still have the lost aforementioned that are looking for a platform to distract from even the simplest topics based on good living and humanity.

Thanks for your comment Doug. More peace, time and freedom is exactly what this is about. It's awesome that you're looking at building another one this year! Make sure you check out our website and follow us on facebook for some more inspiration! A fireplace is on our 'must have' list too. :)

Wow, this is one of my favorite tiny houses that I've seen so far! It seems so big and quite spacious for what it is. I really love their staircase and the storage it offers. I like the staircase idea better than having a ladder.

Your tiny house is beautiful. I love the colour, the interior design and the quality of the finish. I love how functional this building is, yet you have managed to imbue it with warmth and style. It is homes of this calibre that provide an example of how smaller can provide a quality of life that is just as nurturing and fulfilling as a large home. Thank-you so much for sharing your story with us.

I'm really short and I love simple stuff so I'm actually thinking of building one of these and living in it in the future.
@craftlover910 жыл бұрын
One of the nicest I've seen. I like that they didn't short change the livingroom area. So many tiny houses are so cramped in the livingroom area and this one doesn't feel that way. Beautiful work!!!! Only thing I can say I would have added would be a sky light in the loft.....

A tiny house with a great sense of space, that,s really good to see. Well designed and built. I love the concept of tiny house . Do remember to go back when they build their mud (cob?) house, and show us that, please!!!!!!!!!!!! Really delightful people too, all three of you! This was interesting and enjoyable. Thankyou.

Thank-you! We certainly will be catching up with Shaye and Tom again once their tiny house is finished, and hopefully we will be able to follow their cob house adventure too when that starts!

I really love this idea too. I've seen it done in slightly larger houses, but I had no idea that it could work so well in a house this size. It's completely functional, and adds a lot of beauty and character to the house at the same time. A lot of that really speaks to Shaye and Tom's beautiful woodwork and attention to detail.

I love your house, I've been watching tours of tiny house and I saw an other tiny house with stair to a sleeping loft. They explained and showed that the top stair was the height of two stairs. because they were climbing the stairs into a short loft, it was a much more natural transition in and out of their sleeping loft. I suggest that you remove the dark wood draw at the top of your stairs. You'll be amazed at how much more natural the movements getting in and out of your loft.

Tiny house are mostly tailored for the people that want it. They either build them on their own or have someone build them based on their very personal style, movement and preference. Big, professionally built house seldom is what the owner wants. It is a good movement opposite to people who want more, more, more. You see people in the slums live in a five by five foot!!!! rooms and still come out very happy. So it is not how big your house is but how big you are on LIFE ;). beautiful house and couple by the way!!!!

This is exhilarating! Watching TV shows where people have to have huge spaces, granite counter tops, powder room and big bedrooms looks so silly and unnecessary compared to folks who are conquering small spaces.

Great to see a tiny house that is not lined in pine or whatever they use in the US, looks bigger and lighter and I so want one!
@livingbig11 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. They have used an eco ply in this house, and then just painted it white. It's light-weight, simple and the light colour really helps to make the house feel bigger.

What a charming couple. And home!
@kevinfry461810 жыл бұрын
This was a well thought out home. They seem to be very nice folks and seem to have really put some good energy into this project. They also hit on a market that is untapped with this sized home. In the USA we seem to forget about the issue of young adults who can't make rent, move back home if they can, saddled with massive debt's and cant save for when they are older. I think this couple will be in gr8 financial shape in years to come.

The woods- cedar and the wood on the stairs and counter really make it so warm and elegant. Definitely only livable in a warm climate where you are spending a bunch of time outside. Can't see lounging on those wood benches all winter. Excited to see the straw bale house!!!
