I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that you read this and loved it. It is one of my and my gf's absolute favorite books of all time and it pains us both how under-rated it is. Hopefully this means more people will pick it up and read it so it is given the attention it deserves!

OK, you convinced me - I just bought The Spear Cuts Through Water for my Kindle. I'm currently reading The Adventures of Amina al-Serafi and you didn't let me down on that enthusiastic recommendation. 😊 The twinkly white-lighted tree is beautiful!

Yes! I read this earlier this year and was just blown away. Easily my favorite book of the year. Literally the only negative thing I could say about it was that I really needed to be paying attention while reading, so couldn't read while tired or when I couldn't devote my full attention. But it was so worth sitting down and giving it the attention it deserved. Phenomenal and so creative. I was amazed how we could get just a sentence or two from some nameless character that would never be seen again and it would still hit so hard! Everyone was so fleshed out and so human. And the theater and description of the play and the actors, amazing. Ugh I want to read it again now!

I was so jealous watching this, I read the Spear Cuts Through Water this year and really didn’t get along with it and I was heartbroken. I absolutely loved The Vanished Birds so I was highly highly anticipating his sophomore novel, and I couldn’t even say for sure what it was but I really struggled to get through it even though it’s something I should have adored. Happy to see it getting the love it plainly deserves!

Your description of The Spear reminds me so much of Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James. Anyone here who has read both? Anyway, that series is one of my favourites, so I’m definitely getting The Spear and reading it… maybe my first book of 2024?
