I was an OTR truck driver and I did not use a high-gain antenna: I used a flat directional antenna and a Alfa USB adapter. I considered getting a yagi and putting it on a pole to get over the truck stop full of 13'6" trailers but it was so seldom that there was nothing around that my cell phone tethering did not have enough data to bridge those gaps would not suffice I never bothered. (not to mention you lose signal strength the longer the antenna wire is). High-gain antennas just take the typical doughnut shaped transmit shape and flatten it. They can, actually, lower your reception. A flat antenna pointed at the -insert free Wi-Fi hotspot here- is a better choice for distance. Sometimes there would be a hotel around and I would call them and ask, matter of factly, "what is the Wi-Fi password again?". Only one did the front desk ask for my room number and that was a one story mom and pop motel. And I always use a VPN with open/shared hotspots.

Wonder if you could please clarify. Flat directional antennas are one thing, But Alfas are omnidirectional. Do you mean that you used a flat-ish dish behind the Alfa? I need to mount something under the eave of a house, about 30 feet from an office, and have an Alfa. I've considered buying a flat directional antenna instead, though, made for outside, with power over ethernet.

The narrow beam signal of a HGA is easily obstructed by hills, trees & buildings, so I do not recommend it for most mobile applications. However a quality external mobile antenna with a grounded base will increase the single range significantly be it, or better a removable connection, may need to be soldered into the router discussed.@@CozyLivingMachine

@@uhoh4961 "Unlimited data" is almost always capped at some amount. They get away with advertising it as unlimited by throttling your bandwidth to worse than dialup speeds or if you're lucky, just deprioritizing your traffic which would likely give you at least ok speeds. My cellular provider says unlimited, but there is an obvious throttling of bandwidth at 1GB then another harder throttle at 10GB and an even harder one at 20GB with a "completely unusable" throttle at about 23GB. Still technically not cut off. I only put up with it because it's cheap and I use home internet a lot.

Nice video, good information. I do have a couple questions though... Doesn't the GL-X750V2 have an IMEI number that lets your Cell provider know that it is not a phone but a HotSpot/Router? Wouldn't they throttle your connection after seeing that it isn't a phone? The IMEI lets them know exactly what type of device it is.

@CozyLivingMachine Жыл бұрын
I believe that the IMEI typically comes up genetic or like any other cellular device. You can also spoof the IMEI through a command if that was to be an issue. The TTL is usually how the carriers tell what the device is, that's why it needs to be changed.

Would the speed of Internet you get an a tablet plan here be effective for streaming security camera footage for a small home w/ 4-5 cameras?
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine 5 ай бұрын
Some tablet plans may allow you to use the SIM in this device, but often it's just a regular phone plan that is required. You can always try it out though! In theory, it should be no different speed-wise between phone and tablet data, and we had 5 cameras, multiple TVs and two laptops hooked up and no issues at all.

Netflix works very well, though T-Mobile restricts streaming to 480p. Using a VPN will let you stream full 1080p or 4K, depending on the content!

@CozyLivingMachine

I like the idea of those, especially if you already have one of those services. The nice thing is that it appears from the sites that none of them will charge you for the modem/router itself, which is great! Lower up front cost, and if you don't already have multiple lines to give you a discount that's definitely going to be the way to go, especially with 5G.

Looking at dropping straight talk. Considering Visible for $25 a month but saw a YT vid where people were doing just as you suggest, popping in a carrier sim card into a hotspot router as if it were a phone. Visible somehow knew it wasn't a phone but didn't say anything for a while till recently. Then they started sending out TOS violation notices & threats to cancel service. How do they know for sure if its a cell phone or not? Does changing the parameters to 64 handle that? I saw a another YT vid years ago where an RVer somehow hacked a hotspot router & used a cell phone's credentials to trick the network into thinking it was still a cell phone. That hack may be obsolete by now but since some people are still having this kind of issue it might be a work around. Any insight you or anyone could provide would be appreciated.

Thats not hacking or anything. You're just putting in a phone or tablets Imei for the hotspot Imei. This device he shows doesn't need that, it just needs the TTL changed. You can do it with netgear also, there's several routers this works with

You know, I'd have to say that the signal MIGHT be a little better with this unit, but the Netgear is pretty good as it is. However, for a real upgrade, I'd look at the bigger brother, the Spitz X3000 (there's also a battery powered version of that too). They have dedicated, larger antennas for cellular, MIMO, all that good stuff. They're definitely spendier, but in my experience, it's by FAR worth it. This is my video on that, might be worth a look! kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4Wwnop4rquIf5I

So, if I wanted to make sure I have redundancy, I could buy two and use two different SIM cards, so when I am in a dead zone for one, I could literally just switch to the other! Also, I think with that Ethernet out port, a tech person could potentially plug in their own router to boost there signal to go farther away from the router, connect a NAS, etc.

Hi. When I found your video I was researching how to send faxes from home without a phone line and without having to pay a monthly fee for an efax provider. I'm not too techie, but could I use an RJ-11 phone cable or USB cable to connect that router to a laptop to send faxes? If so, I'm just not sure what the dialing interface would be or how to send my pdf document. Would I still need additional software? Any help would be appreciated and coffee's on me.
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine 9 ай бұрын
Hi Sheryl! Unfortunately, without a phone land line you won't be able to send/receive faxes. That technology relies on that service, whereas the Spitz router here is a cellular modem. I have noticed that there are a few e-fax services online that offer a certain amount of faxes for free, so that may be an option. www.metrofax.com shows $10 for a few hundred faxes per month! I believe that the technology behind faxing requires a hard phone line, for whatever reason!

Excellent video. I'm an open source user; Linux, DD-Wrt, and gli-net routers recently. Also a TMobile customer. So the question is, doesn't TMobile monitor data amounts that the router is using and then throttle down, or at least give a warning? I had to use my phone as a hot spot a while ago when visiting a "slow" friend that doesn't believe he needs internet at home, and got a warning from TMobile about dropping my speed to 3g levels...BTW, I own 2 gli-net routers and love the interface. I use PIA vpn with wireguard since I didn't want the speed restrictions of Open VPN.

The only idea that I've seen for that is to wire up a DC to DC converter, which probably wouldn't be terrible, but because we run our inverter 24/7 we haven't worried about it too much! With a smaller setup, I've certainly considered it!

@@CozyLivingMachine Thanks! Makes sense you’re running the inverter full time. I try to conserve and run the inverter only as needed as part time boondockers, although with 640Ah of lithium not exactly hurting. On DC, it’d be a no brainer.
