Thank you for the fantastic viodeos. One should note, that it is not that simple to get a Sim-card with unlimited data. Some of them have throttling to 64 Kbps (say UltraMobile) making using the Internet impossible, unless you need to access email or ssh a server via terminal. I am testing Mint Unlimited now. US Mobile 100GB plan looks OK, and, as I have heard, throttles data to 1-2 Mbps.

I am hoping you can share some ideas of options for unlimited cheap high speed cell data for people that don't have families that have multiple lines and can add the additional unlimited data phone line for $10. .. I am thinking that i could probably get by with 150-250 gb comfortably.. but I have not really measured how much data i use on my home internet. I am just one person and stream some movies and download some movies do some web browsing.. and use VR to play.. I am not quite sure how much data my vr head set uses I would guess it is the equivlent of data used for streaming video or maybe making a zoom call? because some data is being uploaded as well as mic data from the headset. But i can't see that being a huge amount.

I watched your original video on your internet setup and purchased the router you use and set TTL to 64. Added a T-Mobile SIM card and was up and running. I thank you everyday. I am on T-Mobile's Magenta Max 55+ plan and pay $135 per month for 3 lines. They gave me a 4th line for free, not sure why, but I used that in the router. My plan also gives me Unlimited Premium Data so I am never throttled. One month I actually used more than 1 terabyte of data while traveling in the RV and was never slowed down. They claim the price I pay is guarenteed for life. We'll see if that holds true. Thanks again for putting this information out there. Oh, and they also give me free Netflix!

I just HAVE TO thank you for this. I follow 3 or 4 RV groups on Facebook and the question "what do you use for Internet?" is asked DAILY and sometimes more often, and I have never seen this suggestion. I bought the X750V2 and set TTL to 64 as suggested, and I plugged in the SIM card from a spare phone on an unused line -- it seems to work just fine! Like you, I have an ancient T-mobile account -- in 2017 I think, and again in 2020, they offered a free additional line, which I still have but had never used. It fired right up.

Thanks for both your videos about these routers, and Thanks for the reply you made on modifying the IMEI. I was about to give up and just return the Router. I’m currently using a sim card from a Samsung phone I had an unlimited data on, due to getting a better price by adding an extra line of service to an AT&T plan we’ve had for years, and the phone was just laying in a drawer, so I had to charge it up some just to get the IMEI number off of it. Anywho, it worked like a charm. I’m getting 50.1mbps download, and 20.5mbps upload speeds. Not quite the 230mbps I’m getting from spectrum internet, But I’ll be using this in the Fifth Wheel while on the road, and won’t be worried about WIFI in the campgrounds anymore, besides all that, just think of all the identity theft that happens on public WIFI. Thanks A Billion!!!

What I like about this, I am guessing there is firmware for the router that would allow you to "port" the voice on the SIM card to a ADDA converter on one of the LAN connectors and you would have the phone access by way of VOIP. 🤔

Also, my phone won't take an e-sim so I will have to maybe go into the office with the phone. I appreciate you clarifying the "$10 internet" from your previous video several months back. You glossed over the $10 bit and spent most of the time talking about the router. I have tmoible but not enough lines to qualify for that. I have a single line for $65 as my phone. I think that includes 45 gigs of hot spot or something like that. My "main" internet is a Franklin T9 and Tmobile's 4G 100 gigs/mo for $50. I'm not mobile but where I live has pretty limited internet options. I am fairly happy with this setup (based on available options) but your talk on the Spitz device makes me wonder if I could speed things up a bit with that. From what I am seeing in the menus as well as google search - seems like you can't change the TTL setting in a T9 except by using a script. No menu option.
@Joeyw-2203
@Joeyw-2203 10 ай бұрын
I haven't used openwrt in a few years, but i recall there's a menu setting for accessing a command line prompt. From there you can enter command line instructions just as if you were using SSH to the device, so you can do it all via the web interface. It does require a certain amount of basic Unix knowledge though.

Wonder how that compares to T-Mobile home Internet at $50 a month for 5g and 4g data. I had it when it was only 4g and it was ok but with the new 5g/4g router it's way faster probably twice as fast. Never thought it would be that much faster. It's also does not experience outages much at all. Overall not too shabby. I know it sucks for some it all depends on several factors the only way to really be sure is try it. I believe they have a 7 day trial period where you can back out. Not sure on the details.

On 6/20/23, I visited my local AT&T store with my X750v2 to add line to account and pickup SIM card. After locating IMEI number from device admin panel AT&T said this is a 3G/4G device--correct. When AT&T customer service entered IMEI number they said it is obsolete. He said they would not activate anything that touches 3G. I returned X750v2 to Amazon. Ordered and received X3000 5G NR. On the way back to AT&T to obtain SIM card for this device.
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine Жыл бұрын
Because it's GSM/LTE/5G, if they give you any trouble at all, I'd suggest just adding a line, grabbing the SIM and letting them know you'll put it into an unlocked device at a later time. There's no reason that they need your IMEI, thankfully! They will likely automatically deny any device like these which is "unapproved" because it's not a cell phone.

@CozyLivingMachine Great info - Thank you so much. 2 questions: 1) When adding a line to obtain the new SIM card will the provider also want to issue a cell number? I have older devices that still have the SIM. Could those be reactivated? 🤪 2) What are appropriate keywords to use when searching for this same type of "travel internet router". There are a ton out there and not all appear to have a SIM card slot, so want to filter the search to the right ones. [BTW, we have Verizon and I read through some of the comments below. Great help and answered many questions.]

@CozyLivingMachine can I take SIM card from my phone and try it in one of these routers to see if it works? I finally found out that our Verizon plan charges $40 for an additional "line". Much better than the $105 we pay for internet service through COX - which goes down frequently both at home AND our business. No Bueno.
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine 11 ай бұрын
I'm sorry, I hadn't seen your comment until now! Just in case the information may be helpful (or for others reading) 1. They will issue a cell phone number. That's fine, the router doesn't care about that, every SIM technically has a phone number (even data plans, fun fact!) Reactivating a SIM card may or may not be possible, I've had T-Mobile tell me that they wanted a new SIM, but it doesn't hurt to try either way! 2. Search terms would include something along the lines of "4G LTE Router" or "5G Router" or "Cellular Router". That should do the trick! Basically, the device has to be a Wi-Fi router, as well as contain a cellular modem. 3. Absolutely. Try your own SIM card from your phone first, within the return period. You should find that it works quite well, but just in case, it's better than paying any silly fees that they want you to. I've read others say that Mint Mobile is a good alternative as well for a great price. Definitely worth checking out. Verizon also has a 5G Home Internet option that includes the router for $50 or even less if you already have Verizon service. That's a great deal also!

This Spitz X750 v2 has the LTE bands B2/B4/B5/B12/B13/B14/B66/B71 that it will work on. T-Mobile uses a few of those, as well as AT&T, so it's all compatible. It's worth looking up the Mexican carriers that you might be using and seeing what LTE bands they operate on and see if they're all covered within that list!

Thank you for putting these videos together. I have been considering getting one but haven't pulled the trigger. I do have a couple of questions that maybe you can help with. Does the adding a line limit you to a set amount of data per month? Or does T-Mobile see the device as a regular phone? And when you use the internet it doesn't count as hotspot data. The other question I have is does open WRT have a function to fix IMEI?
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine Жыл бұрын
Glad to share! Adding a line just gives you whatever amount of data that the plan allows. So we have unlimited data on all lines, other than when it gets congested and we're over 50GB. We never notice a huge slowdown, but it's in the terms. T-Mobile just sees it as any regular phone! Setting the TTL to 64 lets them see it as a phone and not a hotspot or tablet or whatever. OpenWRT can modify the IMEI using an AT command, which I believe is something like: AT +EGMR=1,7,"yourIMEIhere"

Where the previous router (Spitz X750) was getting LTE speeds at ~20Mbps, this X3000 is getting MUCH faster 5G speeds. The trick is all in the hardware itself. This sounds really promising. Does anyone know if on AT&T, if I use the website to add a line as a "phone" they ask for an IMEI of the device. I have old iPhones laying around that I could use for this purpose, but would the SIM then be tied to that and I couldn't put it into the Spitz? Getting to the store is a real hassle around here and if I can do it online that would be awesome.
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine 11 ай бұрын
The SIM would not be tied to the IMEI. I would absolutely use the IMEI from your older iPhone. I say this as an Apple tech that used to switch phones for folks when they needed a whole unit replacement or purchased an unlocked device and just wanted to pop the SIM card into the new phone. Easy as can be! Them asking for the IMEI is silly, in my opinion, you shouldn't have any trouble though.

@ronb6182

Ok now I see the router as a phone so you have the benefit of a router for the price of a phone. I think i will just pay for another cell service that will work at home and my mountain property. I will have to put up an antenna outside in the mountains. I got taken kinda sorta on the 5 dollar mifi deal but PayPal refunded the cost of the jetpack. I recommend staying clear of grandfathered services. The idea of sharing cost is better if you got reliable friends or family members. Even at initial cost this method of internet is better than just using your phone as a hotspot. I have one question can you use this device as a hotspot with data only no voice service. Usually those services are less costly. And not tied to a phone number. 73

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine Жыл бұрын
Happy to share! Your TravelData unit can likely be reset without issue, you should have a reset button somewhere and then the default username and password on the bottom of the unit, in case you need that. T-Mobile shouldn't have to ask for an IMEI, they've never asked me for that. The SIM is what is activated, not the device itself. Worst case, pick up a free SIM card from an Apple Store, call T-Mobile up and have them activate that SIM card on your account. If they ask which device it will go in, just state that you're currently shopping for unlocked devices, it shouldn't make any difference whatsoever on their end!

I have a friend who lives in another city about 2 hours away. He doesn't have internet access, but we'd love to get him back online. Just a few questions: 1) When adding the additional line, it sounds like T-Mobile (my provider) will send me a Sim Card? 2) Will my friend living that far away cause any issues (roaming, etc...)? My parents are on my plan, but they're only about 10 minutes away. 3) Throttling. If that's an issue, is it a phone-by-phone basis or all phones are affected if one uses up the GB?? Thanks for sharing -- I'd love to get my friend back online!

T-Mobile can definitely send a SIM, or you can grab one from an Apple Store, local T-Mobile store, etc! No issues at all with roaming! We've lived in separate states for quite a long while with no issues at all. Throttling or deprioritization, if it were to occur, would be per line, not per account. That should set your mind at ease! Good luck! 🙂

Great question. I'd say it's definitely possible, as long as you can change the IMEI and TTL settings. I don't think most Netgear products run OpenWRT, so it seems less likely that you'll have similar settings, but if they did that would be great. That unit looks pretty pricey, so give it a shot if you already have one but otherwise I wouldn't spend the extra money, personally.

Well it doesn't cost 10 bucks a month if your paying 125 bucks in phones before that. Also it sounds like if you live in a city you will experience throttling. Also 15mbps down is SLOW SLOW SLOW if you have a family full of devices trying to all connect at once. Not to mention if you or the kids do any online gaming. Obviously this works but its not all sunshines and rainbows if your a power user who uses multiple TBs of data a month over the internet.

Q1. Did you try Verizon plan on this router? Does it work on Verizon? The Amazon listing of this device do mention T-Mobile/att compatibility but do not mention Verizon compatibility. Q2. Does It bypass cell phone Wi-Fi hotspot detection by using VPN? Or it natively bypass the detection without VPN? Most unlimited internet wireless plan does cap/block hotspot data on the cell phone. It is important to know if this device is actually using hotspot data or not
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine Жыл бұрын
I have used a Verizon SIM for two days of testing in the past and no problem. I don't recall having to change the APN settings either. Granted, the SIM was activated using an iPhone and then placed into the router, though I'm not sure what impact this had. This did not detect as a hotspot being that the plan didn't have any hotspot data. A VPN is not necessary because the device has to communicate with the carrier in order to configure and be accepted onto the network in advance, independent of the network traffic. This is not recognized as a hotspot at all, but instead like any other phone.

It may also be worth noting that the X750v2 spec sheet lists the following LTE bands: LTE-FDD: B2/B4/B5/B12/B13/B14/B66/B71 Verizon Wireless currently uses these bands: B2/B4/B5/B13/B66 AT&T uses bands: B2/B4/B5/B12/B14/B17/B29/B30/B66 T-Mobile uses bands: B2/B4/B12/66/B71 There is very good compatibility within the cellular chips in the Spitz X750v2.

@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine 7 ай бұрын
Generally, what I've found is that the tablet data lines don't seem to work. However, I don't know exactly why this is a limitation, it could simply be because of the APN needing to be changed to the right value (VERY easy once you figure out what that number is, if not 64 or 65) or it could be changing the IMEI to one of a tablet. Changing the IMEI is easy enough though, so it shouldn't be a huge concern. There are guides online as to how to do it, just a few buttons!
