That’s because ford and international blocked two of the main coolant passages on the heads in order to beat emissions by running the exhaust side of the head warmer than the intake side. That led to the overheating and cracked heads that the 6.9 wasn’t known for, despite literally being the same engine in every way aside from a rocker and oil cooler redesign, and .005 over bore pistons

@Warren No that's not in my head. The soup bowl is an air restriction that can cause a lag in acceleration. You can actually tell the difference when carrying heavy loads. That's it basically. It doesn't increase max power but does prevent a dead vacuum when you got give fuel on heavy loads. Been working on these trucks since I got my SAE 20 years ago. This was the first thing I noticed.

Classic diesel design (CDD) make super high quality parts for the idi they are still expensive but more attainable in my opinion. We use their parts in our high performance idi client builds. Our 1965 idi swapped galaxy wagon has their 130cc db5 injector pump, r&d stage 1 injectors, CDD intake manifold, CDD waste gate delete, garret ball-bearing t4 turbo ( from their site), CDD fuel sending kit, CDD intercooler kit, R&D main girdle, ARP 2000 series studs, comp cam 910 valve springs and retainers, CDD sump kit, CDD fuel return kit, CDD manual glow plug kit, and a used fass lift pump. And the results are crazy, so much usable power right there right now no lag and It is FAST! We haven't had a chance to dyno it or fine tune the pump ( we just got the chassis finished right as covid hit and our local dyno has ben closed ever since) but it will smoke my neighbors 2015 duramax with a full dan's diesel performance kit on it he makes around 850hp and over 1000 ft/lb of torque. IDI performance gets expensive fast but the quality, reliability, and simplicity of these basically fully mechanical monsters are 100% worth it in my opinion. If you live around the southern ohio area come check us out i promise you wont be disappointed and it will completely change the way you look at the IDI platform.

The hotside turbo kit from r&d is 1200 dollars and a s369 like this is probably about 1200 too. A 110 db pump from them is 12-1300 then 4-500 for injectors and however much it would cost to intercool it would vary. I'm sure it would need a clutch and gauges plus other supporting mods like fuel system. All in all probably about 7-8k for the full build on stock internals.
