What are we going to do with 8 VW Beetles?

We headed out on our last trip to pick up the remaining 2 VW Beetles left of the 8 that we bought from a local customer. Fortunately, it isn't as hot as it was the last 3 trips and we get them loaded up and back to the shop without any issues. But now we have 8 VW Beetle projects, none of which are running, and we're going to take one of them to a car show in less than 3 months. It won't be a show car by that point...in fact we're going to do as little as possible (in our eyes anyway) to get one of these things on the road. Here is the fun part, YOU get to choose which VW Beetle Sam drives to the show. So, please take a few moments to vote in our KZbin Community pole. Sam, the 67 would be a great choice. But then the 68 looks pretty decent. A hard choice for sure, but know you, I'm sure whatever you do will be awesome! My choice (if it were me) would be a pan off resto on the 67....my favorite year for type1.

Luckily we have two 1967s and I am pretty sure Gary and Jeff want a full pan off resto on one of em! I was kind of hoping the voters would pick the car with the most damage, the 1968 but it looks like the 67 is winning in a land slide!

I vote for one of the '74's. Late model standard Beetles get a bad rap in my opinion, but they are usually really solid cars. Plus you can sit on the bumpers!

I vote for the '74 Super, in the middle of the front row...it just kinda stood out to me for some inexplicable reason. I actually own a '68 just like the one you rescued today and wouldn't mind a matched set so if you want to restore it to like new condition and send it over I wouldn't mind 😉

Hi Sam. I vote the green Super Beetle from 1973. In Europe we call it 1303 if it's got 1300 ccm motor, and 1303S with the 1600 ccm engine.

I think we saw a sunroof hidden back there. Let's pay tribute to a 2inch front drop, 1inch rake in rear, sunroof cuz its just Arizona and a 180mile round trip with safari windows and vented rear 1/4. Let's go wild and crazy with the Orange scheme and that should include the engine as well. Make if safe with cross and drilled rotors, sway bars front and rear and just because your kids are going, throw in a Ron Lummis bolt in roll cage. Due to the heat, might add Oil coolers/fans... For the extended trip why not add a tow trailer with luggage, coolers and since it's the desert, we all need extra lights. Be safe...

I vote for the '67 with sunroof. How about a cross between a Class 11 and a daily driver? It could have knobbier tires and a little lift, maybe no cage. Something you could run errands in but also drive to the trails after a weekend.

I actually did just that with a 71 I had a few years back, it say higher than most Baja Bugs thanks to notched spring plates, Type 2 CVs and Thing front trailing arms and spindles. It was a fun build!

Class 11 cars have to have a beam front end, so the Super doesn't quite qualify. A rally inspired build would be cool though! Looks like the 67 is running away with the votes at this point.

I would like to see a baja bug or a class 11 race bug, since i have seen a lot of street bugs and daily drivers but i havent seen the more racing oreintated EMPI parts in builds

The Ghia is just for test fitting parts (R&D) and has a TON of rust. Not unsaveable....but not really something we're planning on covering any time soon. Our recent Ghia video series isn't getting much love.

That's the plan with the winner of the poll, I have to drive it to a show 90 miles away. I'm going to make it mechanically and electrically sound, and comfortable to sit in and drive. "Good" looks isn't part of the plan.

From where I’m sitting here in the rust belt, all of those beetles look very restorable. I would start with the 67, you’ll definitely have a buyer for that or use it as a show car to advertise your business. Is JBugs branching out from the parts business into restorations?

Yes, we offer conversion brackets that allow the early blade bumpers to be installed on 68-73 Beetles. They don’t have a support for the over rider though, so you will have to come up with a custom bracket for them.
