The bottom of the door seal seems to be binding and keeping my door from closing nicely. What is the likely cause?
@Sam_Mebane3 ай бұрын
I don't follow the term "vining", what is happening?
@kleekru2 ай бұрын
@@Sam_Mebane sorry, that was a typo. I believe it was supposed to be "binding"... either way, I found some 50 year old crusty, painted over door seal material and scraped it out so it is better but the door alignment still seems off and I cannot get either door to open easily with the latch even after several door adjustments. Pulling the door handle is VERY hard and the doors won't close all the way without a heavy slam. Any advice would be appreciated!! (Love all the JBugs videos by the way).
@Sam_Mebane2 ай бұрын
@@kleekru I'm guessing by binding, you mean the door seal. If you think that it is the problem, I would start by removing it and checking the operation of the door latch and handle. If everything works well and the door isn't sagging or mis-aligned and the problem only exists with the door seal in place, most likely the door seal is not fully pushed in place. I can say from personal experience, this is most likely the problem. Getting the new seal to sit into the channel is not easy. Especially if there are any remnants of the old door seal in place. While doing the body work on these doors, I spent a good amount of time with a knife and screw driver cleaning out all the old seal pieces. It is not easy when the door is off the car stands, it's even harder when the door is on the car. Double check that the channels are cleaned out completely and make sure the seals are fully in place. A trim tool helps to get the seal (most all of the squared portion) into the door.

@@Sam_Mebane Thank you so much. I'll try the door without and with the seal again and do a more thorough cleaning (thought I did it pretty well already but clearly I missed some) and see if I can get a better result. Thanks again.

can anyone tell me what size screw is used at the top of the vent wing window frame? the small screw that holds the top into the door tunnel. Thanks!
@Sam_Mebane Жыл бұрын
Same size thread as the window crank screw, 5x.75mm, about 7mm long, with a pan head.

I’ve watched this video many times to help me put my 73 SB door together. Your video is great, but I have a serious problem, and I’m hoping you can advise me. I’ve used all new parts, but my window is tilting in so bad it won’t hardly roll up and down. I’m wondering… is the felt channel brace adjustable? The glass is not being guided straight up. It’s at an angle! Or is there a different felt channel brace for a different year door? I had to replace the door with one from a junkyard. Unfortunately it was a pre 1973. I really don’t know what year. I’m beginning to think I’m using a 73 felt channel brace on a wrong door. Could that be a problem. Thanks in advance for any advice!

If the glass is in place in both the felt channels, the rear channel at the back edge of the door, and the front felt that sits on the back edge of the vent wing assembly, there should be no way for it to tilt. Before attaching the glass to the window regulator, make sure that it slides up and down in the felts relatively freely before attaching it to the regulator.

Hey Sam , how did you guys clean / prep / paint the inner , hard to get to spots inside the door ? I had a hard time so I coated the inside of the door with fluid film. I hope I don’t regret it someday.
@Sam_Mebane2 жыл бұрын
Corroseal is an awesome rust converter. I used it inside the doors and quarters before paint and bodywork. I also used it on the entire chassis, especially on the tunnel, inside and out. Since I had the body off, it was easy to flip the chassis over to make sure it covered everything.
@johnmartin51532 жыл бұрын
@@Sam_Mebane nice ! I’ll check that stuff out. Fluid Film is more for winter corrosion protection. The stuff never dries. It turns into a gelatinous goo. I tell ya though, that door will never rust ! 😂 Thanks again man

@@Sam_Mebane I also wanted to ask you if there’s any videos on getting the rear gravel guards on ? I can’t seem to get that top seal to stay on and i can’t get the guards to stay flush on the car. They always pop out a little. And the fender seal sticks out a bit too. Any tips ?

@@johnmartin5153 that isn't a video we've done. Clear silicone would probably be best to hold them in place. Additionally it will probably help seal against any dirt and debris that will get behind the guard.

Just pour a bunch of paint in there and slosh it all around. It will find every nook and cranny.

Do you have video for a convertible door assembly? I see that white one hiding back there. Specifically, I'm interested in how to remove and install the door windows. 🙏

Not as of yet, that Convertible is on loan from a friend of ours for product testing so we don't have free reign on it yet.

@@Sam_Mebane Shoot. I'm in the middle of fixing a 67 up but I can't find any videos or forums to help me figure it out. I have a service manual for it but it doesn't talk about the convertible door door assembly. I'm considering just leaving them in since I'm hoping to be painting in the spring. Hoping you can do one soon! LoL

This is not the way it goes together folks. Its not that easy. Those clips are junk. Tab come off soon as they are touches. End up drilling riveting them on.
@Sam_Mebane Жыл бұрын
It is in fact the way it goes together. If you get cheap clips, the tabs can break, absolutely. In this video, I installed the clips with a hammer and punch and I didn't break any of them. If you feel installing them with a rivet works best, by all means, take the time to drill the holes and go for it. Or, do what VW did in 1964 and earlier models and glue them in place.
