I needed an extra key for my Honda Pilot. I called the local dealership and they wanted $90 per key, I needed two. I went on Amazon and bought the keys for under $20. I then got ahold of a local locksmith and they programmed both of the keys for $40. It took him all of 10 minutes to complete the job. Dealerships are such ripoffs!

I agree but franchise dealerships usually have deep pockets and lawyers that go along with those deep pockets. They can easily drag these people into a courtroom for defamation even though they may not win that's besides the point of why he's placing cameras in the vehicle, he just wants to let the world know, do what you can to stay away from dealerships in general. If you watch this and you still go into a dealership to buy a new car and you didn't like the experience or you take your car into service at one of these dealerships and you didn't like the experience, and you have the gall to complain about it, you really should have your head examined.

I lost my only working key/fob for my 2012 Honda CR-V. I called one locksmith I used before, but they could only duplicate keys, he referred me to another. These people come to you. He got the car open in a couple of minutes. He figured out the physical key in about 10-15 minutes then cut a new one shortly thereafter. Programmed the remote entry device in maybe a minute. All for under $200. Again he came to my house and did this all from his van. Then I went to a local hardware store and got a spare made for under a $100 Parts, labor, and tax. The crazy thing is the dealership wants $100 to change my engine air filter and cabin air filter. Oh that's with coupon, hence a bargain price. I bought the filters from Walmart for under $30 and I did the engine filter in two minutes. The cabin air filter took my 16 y/o girl about 10. It's her first time. I'm teaching her about basic car maintenance. I've turned the 2012 CR-V over to her. BTW I do my own windshield fluid. The other thing with the dealership, they will add fees for shop supplies, the tech wiped his hands on a paper towel, and environmental fee. They threw the old filters in the trash.

With my Tesla, I can add/remove keys myself in the UI; in the normal settings, not even some special service screen. Not that you need a key when your cell phone is your key over bluetooth. My initial keys also got bent (key cards) before reaching me so they also sent me a free 2nd non-bent set... so I have 4 key cards and my cell phone as keys haha. Glancing online, not too well priced though for spares--$40 for 2 + a fancy branded card holder for them. Maybe could get cheaper 3rd party keys though--I assume any programmable card probably works. Since they're programmable yourself, if you had multiple Tesla's you could probably use one key for multiple vehicles too.

The next time after I now have put on 15,000 miles on those brakes, they would mark their inspection correctly. Another 15k miles later after I know I brake a lot and I have put on 30k miles since brake replacement, the service tech marks it as the best again like the brakes are brand new. In one case no only did I not get those two things, but the vehicle was missing the foam with cut outs for the factory tire inflation device and tow hook that I found out later on that my model comes with but mine was missing. You think that's bad try to get a key for a 20 year old Passat. $750 out the door for one key. On my truck the skim module went bad. I wanted to replace it and get my existing keys to work $2500. I replaced the skim module. I ended up buying a tune for the truck and deleting the skim because that was cheaper and the key would work.

Keep in mind that dealerships add on the cost of parts because they are selling them to you. Generally you can find the same parts for far less and just bring them with you to the dealership and have them put it on.

My local Toyota dealership wanted just over $500 for a fob (no emergency blank) and a fob programming. This is just craziness. The fob was $318.29, tax included, and $195 for the programming.

I keep a 360 always-on dash cam in my car with giant eye stickers. People act very differently when they're being watched and see giant eyes looking at them.

Considering the historical greed and dishonesty inherent with car dealerships. It’s mind boggling to think car companies and the government want to force consumers to only take their cars back to their designated repair shops, after having purchased the vehicle.

The last time i stopped at a Chevy dealership for a popping noise from the suspension, they tried the good ol scare tactic on me and quoted me $2,000 for new front and rear struts. I got the hell out of there, then fixed the problem myself. What was the problem? It was two front swaybar endlinks that cost $17 each.

One time i took my car to the dealership for an oil change. I had just changed the cabin filter at home. Guess what, they recommended i change it. I asked them to pull the one i had and they were looking crazy when i busted them. And that was at the Honda dealership.

Im completely on the side of reasonable billing. And dealers are generally the least flexible and most expensive. They make up for losses though warranty on cash customers. In my experience as a 30 year journeyman flat rate is the fairest system for actual repairs. I can do most jobs in half the time. Where some mechanics may take longer than book time. As an independent now I charge time and materials but most of my work is custom or well beyond what book time could estimate. Point being. If you want the mechanic to charge by the working hour you better find a really good mechanic and expect to pay a high rate per hour. I suggest finding a trustworthy mechanic and sticking with them. Even when they move shops, which they will. If you're in good with your mechanic they will help you to find the best shop for things they're not set up to do. Like getting keys programmed. Much love

Yes technicians should be payed for their skill. No that doesn't give dealerships the right to price gouge.
