Part of the lore of the Crab Orchard & Egyptian, and one of the ways it gained national attention, was its appearance on the nationally televised program "On the Road with Charles Kuralt."
The program was doing a segment on Louisville & Nashville locomotive engineer Billy Byrd, who would in retirement be a fixture at the throttle of trains at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Mr. Byrd was a dyed in the wool steam fan, so the production headed up to Marion, Illinois, from Madisonville, Kentucky, to shoot at the CO&E.
Legend has it that they wanted to get Mr. Byrd in the cab and at the throttle, but there was work to be done and the railroaders didn't have time for all of that stuff. Mr. Byrd however, enjoyed seeing Consolidation #17 at work.
This is the segment that aired in the early eighties.
