i usually keep all my crabs alive in clean saltwater for 4-5 days to flush out the gunk or mud from their stomachs, you get a clean, sweet flavor.

Fish rock crab So Cal 20 years captured thousands upon thousands of pounds and I always receivered them in the harbor for a couple days before I sold them .

I like the part where you filmed the crab dropping down into the abyss. That was pretty cool.

Chicken will keep them in the pot but oily fish is the best at attracting them. Herring, salmon, shad, etc. Obviously white fish will also work but oily fish is the best since as soon as they start picking at it there is an oil slick that attracts crab from quite far away. Great video!
@DieHardFishing7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip! Might try some more oily fish next time!

Hey Adam, what cooler are you using in this video. I noticed the lid opens length wise vs width wise, which is easier to open when stored behind a kayak. Thanks

@chimyshark7 жыл бұрын
if I had a kayak, I'd never go snaring. too inconsistent. not guaranteed.

Kayaking is definitely more productive but I do want to try snaring one of these days!
@troutwardbound7 жыл бұрын
You had some rock crabs (brown, rounded claws) as well as red rock crabs (red, pointed claws) in there. I think that the brown rock crabs' claws are tastier even than dungeness, though the rest of them is not worth eating.
@DieHardFishing7 жыл бұрын
I thought some of them looked a little different! Thanks for spreading the knowledge!

I’m new in fishing. I started last year (2017), I fish near Santa Cruz. Now in 2018 want to do some crab fishing. But I don’t know where to catch them. Are they in deep water, sandy or rocky area? Great video
@DieHardFishing6 жыл бұрын
There are some in the Monterey bay but they are few and far between. The ones I have seen are coming from 100-200 feet of water. If you want to catch them from shore, you can try crab snaring from a few beaches north of Half Moon Bay. I would give the Half Moon Bay Jetty a shot when the swell is low. I have a few crab snaring videos if you want a little more information on that.
@marine67 жыл бұрын
have you ever had any luck inside the harbor / jetty?

I have never tried but I do see other traps there sometimes on my way out so there must be some in there!

DHF, another good video. Do you find it better to catch crabs using cages with your kayak during high or low tide. When we snare we always prefer low tide and low swell days. Also, If you keep on catching lingcod, salmon, halibut, crabs with your kayak, your kayak purchase cost will break even in a couple of years :), very good investment !
@DieHardFishing7 жыл бұрын
I haven't really payed any attention to the tides so maybe I will keep track of that for next time. Hoping to keep improving on my "investment" this year!
@chimyshark7 жыл бұрын
for eating, dungeness crab >> rock crab, by 3x. thinner shell, more meat, and easier to pick. However, I prefer rock crab, because they are SO easy to catch. I go for least effort most quantity. Dungeness if anything are annoying, so I only target rock crab, and any Dungeness are a pleasant surprise.
@DieHardFishing7 жыл бұрын
Very true, I cooked the rock crab and I think I prefer the Dungeness as well. Just not enough meat in the rock crab.

Rock crab is definitely tasty crab, the body and legs are light and clean tasting but the claws tend to have a much gamier fishy taste and sometimes very meaty muscle claws.
@DieHardFishing7 жыл бұрын
True, I tried them out and they tasted pretty good! Not quite as much meat as Dungeness Crab but the quality is still there!

Rock crab is great eating, maybe not as sweet but good just the same.. Dungies are way bigger and have a lot more meat in the legs and body. Reds legs and bodies are tiny.. I always catch more Reds than Dungies and mix the two together for patties or for a salad, no biggie
@DieHardFishing7 жыл бұрын
I tried them and they turned out pretty good! Agreed that the dungies definitely have more meat.

I did that on my last video for a segment. I had lost my lens cover cap and it got a little dusty out there. Just picked up two new lens cover caps at the Amazon lock boxes at Safeway last night. they help, but I'm out there, I gotta remember to try and wipe the lens each time before I turn the Go Pro back on. Long sleeve tee shirts help and make it easy to do.

I heard you should leave the skin and fat on the chicken to give off more scent. I don’t know if that’s true, but might be worth a shot.
@ishwithfish7 жыл бұрын
i read that turkey legs with 'crab jelly' stuffed under the skin is a great combo. i'll try that next time.
@DieHardFishing7 жыл бұрын
I always throw the chicken in with all the skin and fat on. Not sure if it actually helps but its good for the confidence!
