Crabbing with Hoop Rings at Westport | October 2022

My friend Jon came up from California and we went crabbing up at Westport before a early season clam dig.

Sealions liked the salmon more! 😆 they stole a few and we ended up replacing with chicken

Tough break with all those soft ones. At least you got few to eat. I went up there last weekend to see the king tides. Looks like I should have gone crabbing too. 👍

Yeah, it's always fun to take the rings. Catch some crab. Have lunch in town, then head home to hopefully cook crab

Yeah, we were happy. We went back the next day and got 4! 😆 happy we got those 2 clam digs in too. I just had camera issues on the dig so no video of that.

Yeah, we had to work through a few to get some keepers, but the end result was a nice dinner. 😆

Ahhhh ..salmon heads....for good crab bait that keeps the crab buisy in the pot (ring)...there is no substitute!!..

Yeah, its a good bait but the sea lions in the marina were going after them and got away with a few! 😆

Why is it a bummer that he’s soft? What does that mean? He was HUGE!

Soft shell means they recently molted. The inside will be pretty much hollow ( no meat) you wouldn't want to keep it. In this state it's also illegal to keep in that condition.

I don't have the regs infront of me but I believe you can during part of the year. It was closed for pots when we did the video, Rings only
