Cracked Exhaust Pipe Repair: Welding a Broken Expansion Chamber

A very common occurrence nowadays is cracking or breaking an exhaust pipe. Whether it be on a car or street motorcycle, or on an off-road machine, thin exhaust tubing commonly fails, especially on two stroke engines. In this short video, we show how to easily fix this problem, with a little bit of welding and grinding.

If I can make a suggestion, when you weld up cracks, drill a 1/8" hole I'm the ends of each side of the crack. Will stop the crack from traveling. Learned that from an older guy when I first start welding. Has proven to work every time. Steel isn't as bad as aluminum when it comes to welding cracks tho

If i can also add something rather not grind down more of the material before the weld rather use a clean steel brush and clean the coating off with that you don't thin the material more than what it is already is and clean the weld up with a grinder after its been fixed to make it look presentable

Nice work. I have to do this to my snowmobile wye pipe... I’ve had to do this before to a Kawasaki Brute Force exhaust. I use a mig but a tig welder would probably be better.

I went through this several years ago with an Old 92 CR500, Made it 2 rides and new Cracks started along the Edges of the Weld, This material is just to thin. I Quit messing with it and Bought a new fmf Gnarly pipe 👍

After a few repairs we ended up doing the same thing. It's just too thin to stand up to the abuse, and any excuse to buy a new shiny FMF is good enough for us!

You have to drill hole before and after crack or the crack has to go somewhere otherwise will crack again 💯

Is this going to do anything to my bike if I ride it without fixing it .. and my pipe is rusted and brittle

It will lose a bit of exhaust air and maybe a bit of power, and eventually it might break. I say ride it til it dies, then buy a new one 🤙🏼

You probably can't make much by welding a cracked exhaust. But when your own pipe cracks, you certainly save a lot of time and money versus bringing it to someone else for them to repair

I have no idea, but whatever caused it the first time caused it to crack again, in two different spots. We finally scrapped it and threw on a new FMF, problem solved 👍🏼
