2:50 UHM ACKSHULLY: Gates do have a range limit in StarGate though it is relatively rarely brought up (and depends on the type of gate). If you travel to a distant gate you do so by hopping gate to gate across the network and the network has a definitive edge. You can boost the output to get to a far away gate out of network but with the energy required it is generally a one way trip and you need another way back.

In Star Trek, we know the consciousness goes through the entire transporter process from that episode where we follow Barcley through it. . Nightcrawler "can" teleport to places he can't see, but he doesn't know that. He actually slips into another dimension, travels to where he wants to and slips back into ours with no memory of the other dimension.
