A thoroughly enjoyable puzzle. These kinds of logical puzzles arent my strength but I so enjoyed this starting with the given grey 5, If you have more puzzles with the same constraints please send them to the channel. I also have to commend the way Simon solves these puzzles managing to extract so much more from the given data. It is great learning watching him.

He spent about 12 seconds. I see your point, and it's a funny quip; at the time, Simon's instinct was to use the pen tool, and then he did what makes this channel continue to be successful. Instead of just showing the example, he explained how to get to the pen tool. The way Simon and Mark constantly spend time explaining things like that to new viewers is what makes this one of (if not) the best channels on youtube.

I got very confused early. I actually very quickly determined the exact grey line, with the 4s written, and the 23s pencil marked. And then thought "wait, how can I connect the blue?!?" I started to think that maybe the "lines" couldn't cross, but a line could cross through the circles. Which would maybe have worked? I actually gave up there and watched the video long enough to realize my blunder. In hindsight, it seems like it should have been obvious that the blue could/should go all around, especially since when I first started thinking about the puzzle, I started highlighting out random things and thinking to myself, man, these could go ANYwhere.

I just love Simon's dry humor. Some highlights from this solve: "Our between line would be made up of digits between the value of 1 and the value of... 1! And there aren't many of those digits." "I will do a little bit of cursory Sudoku" -said with a sly smile

Solved in 29:58, JUST under half an hour. I really liked how the gray line was forced, which then made the blue line go alllll the way around the puzzle. As Simon said, the 1s and 9s that forced the blue line to take a certain path was a beautiful bit of construction. I had the additional pleasure of not thinking about the green line until almost the very end: this left the 23 pairs throughout the puzzle unresolved until the very end, bookending the whole thing beautifully. Wonderful stuff.

There were a few times I placed a digit with "if this isn't this the blue line route will always be ambiguous". For example at 27:34 the blue line must go through the 4 on R2C4 because that's valid and nothing in the grid will ever change that so the line will be ambiguous unless it is forced to. Thus R1C5 must be a 1 (it can't be a 9 by sudoku) in order to keep only one solution for the line route.

Hm so it wasn’t obvious to me that the lines couldn’t intersect based on the rules. I interpreted overlap to mean that they couldn’t go directly over each other (as in pen tool line overlapping), because there are pencil puzzles with rule set like that (can’t overlap but can intersect), but now I see the rule set here is like the puzzle “circuits”.

33:34 I figured out the yellow circle in box 5 had to be a 1 before Simon since it's only other possibility was a 7. If it was 7, if the line went higher than 7 the other circle would have to be a 9, which is already in the row. If it went lower than 7, then the other circle would have to be a 5, and 6 would have to be in the line, which it can't.
@geoff544

You can tell from 23:50 - if the 1 is not in the yellow circle, then you get a 19 pair in row 5, box 6, and then there is no path for yellow.

@@Zaranathax 😁 If I'm asked to add a between-line clue into an empty grid, I'm drawing the circles as well as the line. To my mind, they're part of the between-line clue.
