Already done yours! I've used it in total for over 20 nights outside including a 10 day trip to Italy and it worked perfectly! I used your hinges and upgraded some parts for better mantainance. I loved the idea of the walls on the lower part and used it when it was too cold with a decathlon mini oven inside to keep me warm. Now I'm working on expanding this area and at the moment it looks great! Thank you!

Nice build of course. Nifty table that. I have never used roof tent, so the idea is a bit foreign for me. Best solution I had when on the road was to sleep in the car. But I had a tent to put all the stuff in. In camp I put all the lugagge in the tent and there was lot of room in the car. Maybe even quicker set up time. Rooftent also takes more gas.

Great video, nice editing, and very cool to find that someone has already done an idea I've been thinking about for a while down south in Australia. Commercial RTTs are overblown in cost when good quality regular tents are so much cheaper and you just need a platform to get them off the dirt. I'm hoping to come up with a much thinner profile, around 15cm or about 6 inches, closed. Must have been a great trip. Love that you did this for a wagon. Thanks so much for recording your efforts and sharing.

I am glad you enjoyed the project. 15 Cm overall thickness is achievable but you can only use a 2 inch mattress - maybe an inflatable one? 🙂

Great build, I am glad that you had a bit of an adventure with it. I have a V50 and I wanted to put a commercial roof top tent on it. My issue is that the tent is +-80kg, then add two adults and I was not sure if the rails will take the mass. Ultimately I put the tent on a trailer. Your solution seems to be a lot lighter.

Sure it will take the weight. Car roof rack ratings 50-75 kgs mean that load that heavy becomes dangerous in case of accident, sudden stop etc. Roof rails will easily take 300-400 kgs while car is stationary

Really nice work and concept. Not sure of the practicality, however. With the Quechua (I've owned one), particularly that model (no vestibule) you have no protection from water ingress when entering or exiting. Manageable on the ground, not so on the roof. Very open ingress option. Where do you put your shoes? (You could set up small bags under the platform which can be reached while entering, but, again, not so good in the rain). Not a concept killer, but not a design I'd be happy with as is. Perhaps look at a clip on entrance idea? Trouble is, that starts to add to the complexity of set-up. An easy(ish) solution would be to add a single arched pole at the front (inserting into the platform in the same manner as most dome tents have their support poles inserted) with a simple fly which clips to the side of the platform further back. Easy to deploy. As for the walls, perhaps make them again but angled out. This would provide more room to make them usable. Not much shelter under the platform otherwise. You'll find most people who have the fold-out style roof top tents rarely use the walls either. They just seem to be too much trouble on what is designed to be a quick set up (whether these fold-out tents provide a quick set up is another discussion, one of the reasons I sold mine...). Again, very nice job.

Camping trips usually require a lot of equipment and it is pain in the ass to load and unload it from the car several times a day.

Yes indeed. Water got between the tent and the plywood and it was uncomfortable!

Genius ideea with that popup tent! Or just forget the hinges and use de normal ones applied over a wooden frame all around the edge of the both pieces of the playwood. It will be like a box. Do you know the backammon game box? Like so... With some water proofing solution on it you don't need that cover anymore.

Yee-naa-yee! Does not work mate. The box would have to be open on one end as the mattress needs to lay flat. Also climbing into the tent would be quite difficult. Not t mention the extra weight. 😉
