@@romevang Ah ok sounds like shitty fan tuning, then. The big weakness of those late Intel 15"/16" MBP is that if both GPU and CPU are utilized at the same time, the VRM overheats and forces the CPU to go down steeply below base clock. Just a note about the storage, as I just finished working on one of these myself: the pcie slot for the storage is rated for gen 2x2, not just the origi al drive. If you use an adapter and install a gen 3x4 drive, you will not get the 3000mb speeds you discussed in the video (in my testing, it appeared capped out at 1200mb post upgrade, much like what you said the original drive was capable of). That said, it is much cheaper to get an off the shelf nvme and an adapter than it is to get a used original drive if you intend to upgrade, so there still is benefit.

Using a 110-115 W TDP Xeon, thermals are a bit better. Disconnecting physically the slave AMD Dxxx card makes thermals much better. Even so, using the opencore gimmick to unlock the use of eGPU using TB2, makes it a bit more current for today's use. Special concerns with the ECC controller on the Xeons that could render you ram useless. There is 3D printed base you can mount this with a noctua fan and improves air flow though the triangular thermal core, makes it better. Repasting everything also helps. You can install different AMD Dxxx cards if one of them fails, but is cheaper to put opencore and use an eGPU, though limited to TB2 20gb/s.

@AwSomeNESSS2 жыл бұрын
This would've been an interesting form factor if Apple actually offered upgrade boards for it. Like, if in 2015 they released Haswell-E and Firepro W7100 boards, I think they could've gotten some longevity out of this form factor. Instead it never changed until being outshone by the iMac Pro as the stopgap solution till the new tower.
@eduardocarrasco88302 жыл бұрын
@@ingusmant Hi there, at some point when I had this Mac last year, the D500 and D700 card were really hard to find and people would sell them for like 500-700 USD each. When I had mine I didn't remove, just disconnected the slave D300 and the computer started normally. The slave Dxxx card does not have any monitor output wired to it, all is managed through the master one. Only helps on processing that's all. This is why using opencore, using a TB2 to TB3 adapter and an eGPU, goes so much better boosting performance on apps.

Mine worked great until upgrading to the second version of Big Sur. There was a memory hole that apple finally patched caused by Safari. I still have one of the GPU's showing one of the GPU's memory being maxed out in iStat. I'm having sluggish performance. Any ideas on a fix?

3:15 NVME but not a standard socket. Doesn't sound like Apple at all!

Didn’t those cost more than 15k when max out at the time?

Hey Jeff, thanks for the insight - have always loved the aesthetic of this weird but wonderful machine. Are you selling yours now? 👀👀👀

Is it possible to use purge wrangler to make a external graphicscard work? I used purge wrangler to make an eGPU work on a 2015 iMac with only Thunderbolt 2. Sure the transferspeed is lower than TB3, what means lower performance but maybe worth a try.

I feel your pain, getting that far and having to break it back down and reassemble because you forgot one little non-standard part that made no sense being there... sub'd!

i bet if they had added more fins to that heat sink it would've been more capable of cooling the higher end GPUs, the fin gaps on that thing looked like they were a mile wide

Out of curiosity, how does it work as a windows machine?

Two thoughts: - The screws: Just _how many_ different sizes of screws are on that thing (plus, possibly, how many different lengths of the same size...)? Even if this isn't exactly designed for end user maintenance - boy, they _really_ must hate their maintenance techs at Apple... - The common heat sink: Yup, that must be about the absolute worst idea of the whole system - the CPU heating (and over time killing...) the GPUs. Why not give each of the three sides their own (unconnected) baseplate plus fins, all reaching into the same common air channel (all in the same end shape as the original heat sink)? That way, every side of the triangle can heat up for itself - plus, going by the angles the fins are going off from the CPU side, pointing at the GPUs, the GPUs don't seem to get nearly enough fins to achieve adequate cooling when getting under any kind of higher load...

The combined heatsink thing is what makes my Thinkpad T410s basically useless. The nvidia NVS3100 makes the i5 520M overheat in no time...

The cooling fins could have been a rolled finned aluminum cut for each part that would neatly slide in without touching each other

One small correction to your video. The "Trashintosh" DID support external GPUS through Thunderbolt. I ran mine for almost 2 years with an external Nvidia 980ti. I know, as shocking as that sounds, it was actually a perfect setup. Then Apple had a major MacOS update come out that PURPUSLY killed the external GPU function. I was constantly in contact with the support team that made my External CPU enclosed, and they informed me "Apple didn't just not include the drivers needed they REMOVED the APIs that the drivers depended on to communicate with the OS." just a couple weeks later Nvidia offishaly ended Mac Support, and I was left with a $1500 Brick dongle. But even after all that. I was a VERY early adopter for this computer...I was on the phone ording one at 2am when they started to sell them. In retrospect, yes I paid WAY too much for it. But I am a 3D freelancer and took it with me to 3-4 different studios that I was working with. So in my case it was my work horse for almost two years, and it DEFINETLY payed its self off. In fact Its still up and running as my Storage and license server.

Sounds a bit like when Sony screwed up "Other OS".

Hello! My Mac Pro has 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5! Do you think I can upgrade that?

How will it perform if you install Ubuntu or Pop!_OS? Since it will fall from Apple long-term support pretty soon, extending it's life is a rational chioce.

I think it is one of the most beautiful computers ever made. Along side the Macintosh 128k and the iBook Clamshells. I’d say the current MacPro is also quite beautiful, and the current M1 iMac.

So what about Windows? Maybe liquid metal thermal? I know you shouldn't with copper but would be interesting to see. I suppose either way you can't get around the hard coded 100watt limit.

Wondering how this machine performs when running windows (bootcamp) . Mostly for gaming
