I subscribe to the theory that Brandon Sanderson has a brother or brothers he keeps in the basement, like Peter Griffin does (but in the shed). They write fantasy for certain privileges, among which is not having to hear recitations from the Book of Mormon.
@ligemerrill6368
@ligemerrill6368 3 жыл бұрын
@@alexmarkadonis7179 Hey! I agree with all of that, except the last bit. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints aren't religious lunatics or fanatics at all. We don't listen to recitations from the Book of Mormon all day at all. At the same time, though, most of those I know wouldn't consider listening to it all day to be any more of a punishment than listening to any random book all day while you were trying to focus on getting something else done.

@lige Merrill. I was raised by a crazy person from the Church of Latter Day Saints. You can't speak for the entire church. She would stand on the basement stairs in the dark, reading to my brother and I from the scriptures. My mother terrorized us. There are crazy people in all religions.

I'm so happy you chose Hobb!! :) I've never felt like I understood a character as well as I know Fitz. And if I didn't know otherwise, I would've thought based on your description that you'd read the Tawny Man trilogy as well, because the way Fitz deals with trauma only continues to be more impressive as he grows older. Hobb also brilliantly ties in the magic to that struggle and makes some painfully beautiful analogies to real life, imo. Such a great fantasy series.

I have a vivid memory from a high school history course, reading a firsthand account by a Sri Lankan who witnessed the first arrival of Portuguese colonizers in the 15th century. The account was something like "their ships docked and were like no ship we had seen before, and their ship could fire a stone 100 leagues and smash a marble building." I think this is the horror side of an Age of Discovery epic fantasy: those people colonialism stepped on had fully formed societies. It is literally akin to aliens with unfathomable weapons and technology pulling up to Earth and going, "what up?" and then sinking New Zealand just to prove a point. Writing from the perspective of those people, as this literally unimaginable force comes to claim them as subjects, that's the true horror to be found here.

Books Rebound Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read most of Kay’s novels and I loved them all (especially Lions, Tigana, Under Heaven and The Sarantine Mosiac). But read enough of Kay, and you begin to see the repetitiveness of his prose. Beautiful, yes, but it can be superfluous as well. Kay’s sex scenes, in particular, bug me. While Martin is blunt and vulgar, Kay is overly poetic bordering on pomposity. One in Tigana comes to mind, immediately. GGK is one of my favorite authors, but too much of a good thing can become jaded.

Let's be real; the reason why the romance in "His Dark Materials" is so underrated is because the story completely changed from the end of book 1 onwards and randomly entered weird religious territory before having a bizarre and slightly contrived ending. Great list Daniel! The only change I would make is replace the "romance" category for "themes" and put Tolkien in that one. But other than that, it's a near perfect list in my mind.

OMGGGG I guessed most of it!! kkkk I loved that u chose red rising because that was my call as well as u were saying. In my case I would choose character development from jordan, and take out rothfuss and chose tolkien prose instead, i think tolkien had a delicate aspect its often ignored because all the other aspects of his stories are so amazing, but in unfinished tales u can see him go all out with his prose and its quite amazing...specially the Beleg story, which is my fav.

Frances Hardinge** would be a must for me with her great world-building, unique characters and settings - and her prose, definitely her prose. Scott Lynch for grittiness, darkness and cleverly constructed webs of plot. Tolkien for his sense of scale, lore and grandeur. Phillip Pullman for his ability to cleverly blend complicated things into intriguing and understandable ones; and definitely his ability to use romance - The Amber Spyglass was heartbreaking. **Please read her stuff Daniel. She writes YA fantasy, and I think you'd enjoy her work. Read Gullstruck Island, and you won't be disappointed. Fly By Night, Deeplight and A Face Like Glass are her other books, and they have amazing concepts, worlds and characters. SERIOUSLY READ HER, you don't know what you're missing! I know this is books, but I also want to give a shout out to three brilliant fantasy series. Merlin (BBC) - its a little daft in places, but I'd certainly take elements of comedy, friendship and love from it - there are two deaths in the series which are two of the only things that make me cry or get my heart aching, but I won't spoil it. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance* (Jim Henson Company/Netflix) - definitely take its brilliant character work, its gorgeous setting and incredibly unique villains. Doctor Who (BBC) - I know the last few series have been a mess; but the sense of wonder, darkness and brilliant sci-fi concepts are excellent things to take inspiration from. Not to mention it has a great MC in the Doctor, who, no matter how bad a plot, has carried me from 2005-2017 (Capaldi was amazing). *Daniel you need to watch it, dammit! It's sooo good!

For me Setting would be epic high Fantasy with traditional fantasy races as well in a more Pirates of the Caribbean atmosphere with a slight modern sprinkle. Tone for me I chose Scott Lynch, Character Development Christopher Paolini, Action and Fighting Brent Weeks, Villains George R R Martin, Hero Tolkien, Plot Neil Gaiman, Magic System Lev Grossman, world building Patrick Rothfuss, Battles: Brent Weeks Again, Romance Marissa Meyer, Pros Laini Taylor

You're tempting me here--Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin novels are some of my favorites, and the idea of a fantasy story at sea and in lands newly discovered by Europeans--albeit a couple of centuries earlier--is intriguing.

On the battles - all the reasons you give for Weeks (right after you passed up Erikson) all apply to Erikson as well, arguably more so. Remember Coltaine's Chain of Dogs in Deadhouse Gates? They were a tiny force being pursued by armies many times their size across a continent that had risen in revolt against them, all while ensuring the safety of thousands of civilian refugees. Their enemies even had powerful spirits and sorcery. Sounds like exactly the things you were talking about ;)

i get the sanderson pick for world building, but tolkien did build middle earth with relativly short books, Lord of the rings is one book is about as long as Way of Kings. Yet it fills out the world of middle earth way more by itself then way of kings does alone. While still having a great plot and story, all contained in one book. So i would say based on only your points tolkien actually did it better. I am trying to look at it without all of the world expanding content tolkien put out later, just focusing on what is in the LOTRs.
