Thank you for the review. My sweetie gave me the Scan 'N Cut as a Christmas gift, and I'll admit to opening it a little before the holiday (like 3 weeks before!) A couple of tips. #1 After the mat has lost the stickiness, use a 1/2" piece of tape, either blue painters tape or clear tape on each corner. This will hold your paper down enough so that it won't slip around. #2 Keep your paper inside the 12" x 12" narrow blue lines. Otherwise the rollers won't move the mat correctly.

Nice review! About the mats - I'm an active user of this machine and love it. At first the mat is very tacky, I pressed a piece of paper on it a couple times and lifted and it made it just right. NOW, there will come a time when the mat loses its tack - in that case, I use a bit of Tacky Repositionable Spray on the back of the paper (or on the mat itself) and it works like a charm. I also use an old gift card and rub the paper to the mat so it sticks well.

What kind of tacky spray do you use? These mats are getting expensive

Thank you so much for making this video, I've had my Scan n Cut (model CM110) for years... and it's stayed in the cupboard I've been really hesitant to use it. I have used my SnC quite a bit now since getting it about 3 weeks ago. First of all if you expect to get great results you MUST use the plastic spatula that came with the unit or you will not get good results, as you found out in this video. Also you will have better experience with using the device when you follow the directions as listed in the manual as I can attest to as well. The low-tack mat I use a lot & am fairly pleased with repeated use & the level of tacky-ness it has. I notice you loaded the machine after you touched the load button; I load my mat & get everything ready & do not press on the mat while it is loading & that is a tremendous help in getting it to perform the best.

I recently viewed all the videos at the Brother website & then saw the machine in action at the Houston Quilt Festival. Of course things like the lack of mat stickiness were never mentioned. Thank you for bringing that up & also the fact that it did not always read the objects correctly (butterflies) was also helpful. I thought perhaps there would be less of a learning curve on this machine than the Silhouette. I don't have any electronic machine but had seen the Silhouette Cameo at my local Archivers when they first got it in. The clerk said it had a steep learning curve. Didn't feel I had the patience for that. However the cost of the Silhouette is almost half that of the Brother. (Was never interested in a Cricket after reading all the negative reviews on various sites) Guess I'll stick with my metal dies & Big Shot for now. I would enjoy seeing what else the Brother can do with things such as fabric, embossing, cutting different thickness, etc. as compared to the Silhouette. Maybe one day I will venture into the electronic dept. of paper/fabric crafting. Videos such as yours will certainly weigh heavily in my future decisions. Thank you for all your unbiased reviews. They are really quite helpful & informative. Keep up the good work!

I just got my machine today. I was a little confused on how to use it because the printed directions are not clear and I have never used a Cricut or other Die cut machine before. Your video was very helpful. I thought I was doing something wrong because things didn't stick to the sheets very well so I'm glad to see it wasn't just me. I think I'm going to love this because I do want to cut out my own designs. Thanks again! Oh, and to answer below. You can move stuff from your PC using the flash drive. When you search for the image you want, you have access to the flash drive to pull images. I would guess the possibilities are endless. One more thing.. my machine came from Amazon for $399 and did include both blades and both mats.

I do some amateur bookbinding. Will the cutter cut out patterns on goatskin and sheepskin which are about 1 - 1.5mm thick. Also will it cut out buckram and similar materials? How often do you have to change the blades and are they expensive. Many thanks for your help.
@crafttestdummies9 жыл бұрын
+Colin Smith Colin- I have seen samples of the SNC with leather, but have not tried that myself. Buckram should be easy. As for the blades and cost, that is dependent on the thickness of the materials you cut and your location. I suggest Googling that. :)

So here's the deal- if you love the Silhouette, just get the PixScan mat for $14 bucks! (I have a video on that, too.) The SNC is really for folks who are computer-averse. I am having a huge learning curve with this. I own Brother Embroidery machines and software and have used them with the greatest of ease but this really is quite the challenge. I am not having luck scanning in an image when the image is on colored card stock. I have created some text that is outlined with a Christmas tree, I use the draw to draw first, then I scan again to then cut out just the Christmas tree outline only. because this is on green card stock my image is so faint that it's not picking up the image. I have gone into tools and tried turning off the background, making it lighter and making it darker, to no avail. I'm wondering why this image is so poor. I don't see a light go on inside like a typical scanner. Do you think I have something wrong with my scan n cut?

Lil StampBug You can use the Pix Scan mat with the Silhouette and get it to cut out your stamped images. The Scan & Cut is easier to use, and is great if you don't like to use a computer. If you are computer-savvy and want access to an extensive library of designs that are very economical- about $1 each, then the Silhouette is better for you. I'll do a head-to-head comparison of scanning & cutting in late April.

I'd really like to know how it performs with stamped images AND does it scan stamped images that are colored? What I basically want this machine for is to replace having to buy expensive dies that go with the stamped images. I do know from watching other YT videos that if the design of the stamp has any "broken" lines, ie like a faux stitching, that the SNC machine does not recognize the image. As well, how many times can you use those tacky mats when cutting images, as they are $25.00 for the Standard Mat on Amazon.ca AND is there another mat that could be used on this machine? My apologies if I've asked too many questions but I am on a disability pension so if I did decide to purchase this machine, it will take me a year to save up for it. Thanks so much for your review....really appreciate it!

The possible application of this machine fussy cutting stamp images intrigues me. I have never owned a die-cutting machine of any sort so I apologize if this question is common knowlegde: will this cut a peice of paper that has an adhesive back? Like if I apply Scor-Tape to the back of a sheet of paper (without removing the other protective barrier), will this gunk up the blade? Will it cut at all? Fussy cutting is one thing; trying to adhere the delicate image is another.
@crafttestdummies11 жыл бұрын
Angela- the only issue with applying adhesive first (like scor-tape or xyron) is that then it won't adhere to the sticky mat. I've never had it gunk up the blade, but those paper liners are silicon-coated and so they don't stick to the mat. Better to cut first, and then run it through a Xyron.

OK watched Part 1. I agree with you the best feature of this machine is its ability to pre-scan the background and allow you to choose where on the base to do the cut. (If I understood correct.) Have never seen that before -- that is nice. Also re the newbie errors, no sweat IMHO, we are all newbies with newer technologies -- and learning from each other. One more question if you happen to be reading this (;0) -- I understand one of the features of this machine is its standalone capability (not connected to the computer). Do they at least give you an option to do that?? I like a standalone capability, but ability to connect would also be nice.

Right now there is no connectivity. You can download SVG files onto a USB and then transport to the SNC, but that is all.

Very helpful video. I've been looking at this machine, and was wondering if there were bugs to work out of it. I'll probably wait for the second generation to come out before sinking some big $$ into it.

Thank you for this video. I want to buy a machine but not sure which one.

can you cut tissue paper or cloth like paper in the scan and cut ??
@crafttestdummies11 жыл бұрын
I've never had any luck with tissue in ANY machine that uses a sticky mat- it's too delicate and will tear. As for cloth-like paper, I'll try it. I have some stick-backed canvas I'll put through the next round.

Can you cut your image in an oval shape, just like if you were putting an oval die around and image and cutting it? Thank you
@crafttestdummies7 жыл бұрын
Yes, and I actually did that technique in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6q9nax5arejotE You just position one image inside the other! It's very simple.

Can you put a 1.5mm thick magnetic paper through this printer?

Not a printer. It's a cutting machine.

Hi, Can it cut multiple items all on the same mat?
@crafttestdummies10 жыл бұрын
Sure can. Just place your images where you want on the screen, and it will cut them out on the same place on the mat. You can even load the mat with different papers to make it more efficient.

Did you see the wolf I scanned and cut? Or what kind of designs are you talking about?
@slimdiva12311 жыл бұрын
CraftTestDummies what about a drawing that I do myself. I did see the wolf and I guess that does answer my question. i have been drawing paper dolls just wondered if it could scan the image store it and cut as many as I wanted.
@crafttestdummies11 жыл бұрын
Gailavon Galloway You could scan a doll, create a cut file, and then use it over and over. However, it might be just as easy to draw your doll, and then do "scan to cut" so that it's unique to each doll. Does that make sense?

I'm not having any success with any cutting. I've tried different blades and pressures. I bought the Rhine stone set and sticker maker. I'm pretty bummed out. I spent over 500$ and haven't been able to cut anything!

Is there a reason you are not using the scanning mat to scan?
