It’s conditioning, not memory… “Baby Elephant Syndrome”, where a baby elephant is tied to a strong rope or chain at a young age and is unable to break free of the constraint. When the elephant matures, strong enough to uproot trees and surely break the rope, but the elephant has been conditioned to accept this constraint. Even if a weak rope is used, the elephant will not attempt to break free. The constraint is now in the mind of the elephant opposed to an actual physical constraint.

For anyone who is curious about why an elephant never forgets is a phrase its because when you have a baby elephant that you’re training like for the zoo or circus, you use strong enough rope to tie it to a stake, and the elephant remembers as it ages and gets bigger that if it’s tied up with a specific rope on a specific stake, it can’t leave a specific area. Even though it’s gotten older, larger and stronger.

The reason is when they are young and or put in captivity they are chained to a steel spike in the ground, and remained chained for a real long time, after being conditioned to not being able to pull free from the chain, they could then be tied by a rope around the foot with a small wooden peg and in their memory they can't pull free so they no longer try, very sad.

I know the real reason, when an elephant dies ,the rest of the herd will continue to visit the place that Elephant died for years and years and they move the bones around in a seemingly ritualistic way ,as if they miss that individual, it is also thought they may do this so that other animals think they can't die ( unlikely theory), but for many years explorers believed all Elephants had a grave yard that they went to to die somewhere in Africa, because they did not see complete dead Elephants anywhere,until they observed Elephants scattering the bones, to be honest nobody is really sure why they do this,
