its called practice. i know, its an overused word but im saying the truth. try starting off with objects than using shapes as proportions for humans. you can also look up references for help with shaping them. these are my tips as an artist.

Siempre me gusto el estilo artístico de McCracken. Es tan simple y efectivo en tantos sentidos. No es tan complicado y es lo suficientemente práctico para que los más pequeños aprendan a crear personajes. En este caso, Wander es la perfecta representación de como crear a un personaje simple con un poco de tu creatividad.
