This is my 2003 Cadillac Escalade EXT that cranks but does not start. It will start however if I bypass the fuel pump relay to force power to the pump as I demonstrate in this video. This means I likely have a bad relay or my computer is not sending a signal to start the fuel pump when the key is turned.
Try this BEFORE you replace your fuel pump.
Disclaimer: I’m not a mechanic or repairman; I’m just a person whose stuff keeps breaking so I try my best to keep it alive.

Friend had me look at his 01 escalade. It arrived with a dead battery I was able to jump start it and drive it around the block. I shut it off and started it up but its just cranks and doesnt start. I tried this bypass with no luck.

This would be good to check fuel pump before you replace thought most of the time it's the Passlock or Vats security system acting up that cause fuel pump not to turn on..

My 2000 escalade is odd no security problems it just takes ten tries to start in the morning the rest of the day it starts after two or three tries but starts right up when I spray some starter fluid into the intake I’m not sure if it’s my pump because it runs fine otherwise or if maybe there’s a fuel pressure regulator or something else down the line that’s preventing it from getting the pressure to start

Not sure but on mine the fuel pump primes for a couple seconds when you turn the key to the on (not run or start) position. I’ve experienced what you describe with old carburetor cars where the gas is slowly pushed and sucked up to the engine when cranking. You might want to try replacing or swapping your fuel pump relay and also look at the lower left hand corner (7 o’clock position) when you pull the relay out for a little hole that might be marked on your fuse diagram as PRIME. You can try jumping the 30 relay hole spot (it has constant power) with the PRIME hole to see if that causes the pump to come on. It should. If not, then the pump may be on its way out. Also, I suppose the fuel filter might be clogged. Hope that helps. Cheers.

Hey i have a 04 caddy same thing 6.0 and it stats up.and dies a frw minutes later and wont start many told me fuel problem or cam shaft senser is gone or sensers etc im not sure any ideas?

How long will it run before quitting? And then how long before you can get it started again and is that just by waiting or by pulling or tapping on the relay or taking a rubber hammer to fuel tank?

@@ChanceSummer it will start up and shut off 5 mins later and wont start up keeps turning but was told it could be a senser im not sure have to wait 2 hours to start it back up.and only runs 5 mins and its out

@@ChevyCruze410 wow, that is very specific so I’m thinking likely not fuel pump or filter or even relay. Sounds like maybe computer. Have your tried disconnecting and reconnecting battery to see if that clears whatever memory it has? Also, have you tried jumping relay like in this video to see if it will run longer than 5 mins? If it won’t, I personally would rule out relays and solenoids and the pump if it is always 5 mins. Did you check for engine codes to see if some engine fuel management or misfire is being reported? Sorry I’m not much help on this as I’ve never experienced that one before. If you are desperate you can always wire a 30 amp (only needs 15 but I always double to be safe) rocker switch and wire it directly to fuel pump and battery thus by-passing all computers. Basically, turn switch fuel pump comes on, turn switch off and fuel pump dies. Common in race cars not so much in road cars because it defeats the safety feature that’s supposed to turn off fuel in the event of an accident. Good way to test things though.

I guess I had something similar in a 1996 Jeep Cherokee where it would run fine for x minutes and then always die at idle and not restart until battery was disconnected and reconnected. It was the idle Control Valve. Cheap and easy to replace.

When i jumped it there was no power to the pump. IF it's the downline fuse where is it?? Thanks

The fuse is also on the engine compartment fuse box. The relay is before the fuse (the fuse sits between the relay and pump) so if the fuse is burnt out jumping the relay won’t do anything.

It might be labelled IGN, which is I suppose linked to the computer that tells the fuel pump to turn on or not. Of course, if all your fuses are good you can try swapping a relay from something else in the fuse box compartment to see if that makes it work. If no go, then the fuel pump could be dead. I had to replace mine.

Checked. Mine is labelled PRIME, to the left (bottom) of the relay. If that is burnt out, my pump gets no power.

If you have a voltage meter, you can start by making sure there is 12+ volts on the “30” terminal. It should have constant power. The relay essential works by switching (connecting) the power from 30 to 87 when the computer tells it to. All the jumper does is force power to 87 (fuel pump side). If it works, you’ll hear fuel going to the engine (fuel rails) right away. Let me know how it goes. Other guys in the future will want to know. Cheers.
