Crankcase Ventilation and Diesel Engines

It's car and model specific - unfortunately for RYCO's argument I have a VW diesel. When your crankcase vent is ALREADY blocked and you have oil seepage visible on the exterior of the engine due to increased crankcase pressure, then this "oil catch can" cannot help. First, you need to unblock the existing vent. Then, install this device between the NOW unblocked crankcase vent and the engine air intake. Unfortunately, on VW TDI 1.9 engines, the blocked vent cannot be got at without taking off the moulded plastic cam cover. Why VW don't make this vent accessible from outside the cam cover for cleaning, ..remains a mystery. A job which should take half an hour turns into a three hour job with possible expensive replacement of cam cover gasket.

Good point you raise. You do need to check that PCV system is fault free and clean prior to installing a catchcan and should always check that the PCV system is working correctly.

How do i empty the Ryco catch can?

Hi John. If the catch can has been fitted with the drain hose pull back the red section until all oil has drained out. If it has been fitted without using the drain hose supplied, simply slide out the unit from its bracket and loosen the drain plug on the unit and let the oil drain onto a pan or bottle.
