Real Life - Commando. This one-hour documentary follows a troop of Royal Marines recruits through some of the toughest military training in the world. Shows a less PC picture than 2003's 'Green Beret' and 2007's 'On The Front Line'. One scene cut out (naked bar) due to youtube TOS.

“Your mind is a weapon. It can beat heat, overcome hunger, eradicate pain, turn soft flesh into hard muscle. Want to know what it takes to earn the green beret? Start with what’s under it.” Good advice not just for Royal Marines, but life in general.

I'm not sure that is always true. People are all different and one size doesn't fit all. Square pegs in round holes spring to mind. I certainly wouldn't want to don khaki and anyway, am too short and suffer from asthma. Although I was twenty nine at the time of this doc, I turned 52 two months ago. I dislike being shouted at, too!

Have to agree. I joined the navy in 1998, spent lots of time with boot necks. Great lads, unbelievably tough as that’s not an understatement. Difference between the generation then and now - back then you just got on with it. No questions asked, instructors humiliated you, you either got on with or leave. No one made a fuss. Absolute generation of wankers these days.

In this course, you will experience pain. If you really want to pass, don't give up, no matter how much it hurts. Your muscles say "for facks shake, pleashe shtop! I can't take this shit any longa!" But you have to resist the urge to give up and say: "NO! Fuck off body instincts! This shit is for both of us!"

Brings back memories. We had Sgt Thomson on our Training Team when we went to CTCRM a few years later than this in 2002 as RMR recruits. Having recognised him from watching this programme before we joined, we were shitting it! 😆 To be fair he had mellowed somewhat, but needless to say we were still beasted to hell!!

Your defintely right in saying that. Having said that, they go hand in hand. Training may never give you the experience of real combat, but your not likely to make it through combat without that training.

The Royal Marines have an outstanding reputation, and it is not a bad thing that their training is harsh, physically and mentally demanding. When the chips are down in small unit tactics with relatively light weapons, the only thing that you have to rely upon is your training and your comrades.

Sometimes it scares me that they are just giving a personality to a bunch of kids that don't have them. Molding them into overly militaristic and harsh human beings.Yet I think I still think such heavy training is necessary. Its truly an achievement to become a Royal Marine.

Both the Royal Marines Commando's and the 75th Ranger Btn are elite light infantry units with specialised and intense training. Both are used extensively in support of main special forces units in cordon and dedicated QRF roles. It would be more accurate to compare Rangers to UK Special Forces Support Group. RM's have a tradition of being employed in maritime operations whereas Rangers don't have that history or link as they are an Army unit not Naval. They are not an easy comparison, I agree.

@moorevayne quite alot of the troops get backtrooped, i know that on commando on the front line, 9 out of the 50 passed out as originals, where as 25 from the original troop eventually passed out, some were injured and some just needed more instruction at various tasks and were backtroopered

What you're seeing here is the tip of the iceberg, this is what they're prepared to show the camera and what has been allowed to be released. But think what service the training team are providing here, they're physically and mentally changing people and the way they live their lives and will forever live their lives.

If you noticed Commando is a very Commonwealth term. The Americans don't use it. What they do is they call everyone non-conventional unit Special Forces but little known to most people is that there is a division, Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 SF is the real deal like Delta Force and Navy SEALs. Tier 2 is Green Berets, Rangers, etc., all the light infantry like the Paras, Royal Marines and former British Dominion Commandos.

@Dogmeat1950 Kingfisher Battle near Con Thien - In 1967, "Operation Kingfisher" was launched to destroy NVA forces just south of the DMZ. On Sept. 21st, the 2nd battalion, 4th Marines began a "search and destroy" mission and quickly encountered the entrenched 90th NVA regiment. After a day-long battle, the Marines had suffered at least 16 dead and 118 wounded while trying to break out of the enemy's kill zone. The battalion withdrew at dusk, 15 dead Marines were left behind.

I love my pals in the RMC we trained at 29 palms cali. and I wish them all the best when they return to Plymouth England. But it is comparing Shock troop assault Marines (USMC) to Surgical strike commando the only real similarities are we are usually both delivered from the sea. I said 'up to a point'. The US Army Rangers (along with Belgian, French and Dutch special forces) were heavily influenced the British Commandos of WW2, who in turn became the SAS, SBS, Parachute Regiment and Royal Marine Commandos of today (40, 42 and 45 Commando are the surviving units).

I was a sniper in the U.S.M.C., though i never had the honor of training with any Royal Marines, i did run into a fire team of the crazy fuckers at a bar in jacksonville florida. Being a Marine myself, just sharing the name is an honor, but drinking with the these dudes was a fucking blast. No different from American Marines, and just as fuckin hard. Two other Marines and I sat with these guys, shared stories, laughed our asses off and drank ourselfs stupid. Much respect to my brothers in arms.
