Real Life - Commando. This one-hour documentary follows a troop of Royal Marines recruits through some of the toughest military training in the world. Shows a less PC picture than 2003's 'Green Beret' and 2007's 'On The Front Line'.

0:59 sums up recruit training perfectly. I generally enjoyed Lympstone but receiving conflicting orders and then being made to accept some form of blame for it pissed me off on many occasions.

Training is hard and the training team beast the lads for a reason...... it drums into them that being lazy, making mistakes, general sloppiness etc.... gets people killed in combat. If you get soft on recruits, they won't do as they're told and discipline will break down causing chaos.

@Mike Foxtrotter yea but it's task specific right. It's going to help them get fit lol. I remember getting made to do a river run with our day bags full of gravel so about 10-15 kgs. I was up the front and when I crossed the river I swam across, the guys behind me hadn't seen me swim and ran in, down to the bottom they went🤣🤣 It's normal to get thrashed, that instance was because the guys rooms weren't clean during an inspection. Ps I'm not a royal either...just a dirty old antipodean grunt

The problem is not that the royal marines are loosing people, it is that they are loosing people like Jamie. It's an old school, new skool thing. We were taught (back in 81) that if the officer got zapped, then the strippy could fill his place, and if the strippy got zappped, then the corporal could fill his place, and if the corporal got zapped, then the marine could fill his place. The Royal Marine was taught to think for himself, within the unit, as part of the unit

@SeeYouNextFall there is a 3 day course prior to the 32 weeks training known as the Potential Royal Marines Course (PRMC), it consists of various physical assessment and tests. If you are successful on completion of the course you will be given a date on which you can start Recruit Training which is the 32 week course. The aim of the course is obviously to route out the people unsuitable for Recruit Training.

American Marines learn all of the tactical and combat stuff at their follow-on schools. An Infantry Marine will spend 13 weeks at recruit training (boot camp), 8 weeks in the Infantry Training Battalion (ITB) and then more time training for their specific job (called an MOS), followed by on the job training. For other specialties (non-infantry), there is 13 weeks of recruit training, 4 weeks of MCT, followed by as many as 24 weeks of specific training for their job (41 weeks total).

Yes, the USMC and RMC are different. The USMC is, overall, like the Army, but can operate from air, land and sea. If you want an equivalent to the RMC it would be the USMC Recon Force or MARSOC. Don't insult the USMC, I'm sure they could beat any other Army in the world at Physical Training. That being said, I have great respect for all US Armed Forces and all its allies' armed forces.

Never been in any kind of military but this much seems obvious: if training relies on breaking the recruit's ego apart, and the recruit is determined NOT to have his ego broken apart, the whole training process is unfortunately fucked from the start. Maybe they need to find out how to get recruits to first WANT to have their own egos broken down. That comment about how "this place chips away at you" says it all really...the recruits feel like the training is taking something ( pieces of themselves ) away from them that they actually value, so they drop out, instead of chipping away at pieces of the ego that the recruit himself feels/understands to be faulty or that has no value.

Just give the instructors what they want and everything is relatively straight forward. The lad bitterly complaining about "standing up for rights" should not be in the unit. Not once did he mention that others of his peers would be counting on his conduct and support. It's a bit late in a 'fire-fight' to take the individual route, as opposed to being a fully functioning member in a cohesive unit. Difficult to inform combatants , that their back-up will consist of under achievers. ::(

100% I watched this documentary a few years before joining in 2004. It’s by far the most representative documentary on RM training there is. Commando on the frontline and commando school were both absolute dross. We had ‘Hollywood troop’ a few month behind us in training and they were spoon fed through the whole course. I ended up as one of 12 originals out of 57. Hollywood troop passed out 40 odd originals, an almost unheard of low attrition rate.

Could not the officer, at his leaving interview, having said he was someone the Corps wanted to keep, have questioned his reasons for leaving. (without the attendance of NCOs from the training team)? And so received an honest answer, So that perhaps, with time. properly selected trainers might gradually learn how to produce the best results from their recruits. The Colonel stated in his briefing to trainers that humiliation has no place in today's society. A recruit must expect his physical and mental limits to be tested beyond his own imagined extremes, or the green beret at the end of training isn't worth having. It isn't girl guides' training. Anyone aspiring to be a trained Royal Marine has to expect that if he falls below the required standard he will not succeed. Nor should he. His own life and more importantly the lives of others will depend upon his reliability within his team in a Commando unit. This recruit COULD have withstood the personal humiliation given by that sub-standard, bullying, too full of his own piss and self importance, stupid little Corporal. Believe me, conduct such as his in a Commando would very properly have HIS lights punched out - perhaps even a bullet in the back during a convenient firefight. All this recruit really had to say to himself was - 'Am I better than this little bastard? Yes, I f......g am! So balls to you if you think you can ever get the better of me.' As an ex-Royal Marine myself, too long ago now to call it any but a former life I would say this. Leadership is nothing less than example. It says to the trainee, 'You I can respect and listen to.' But only ever if he knows that he too is respected, just so long as he always gives 100% of himself

If you can't take proper care of your personal administration (the most basic of skills) then you're in the wrong business. To be a success it takes self-discipline, self-motivation, commitment and courage. If you're not self-reliant and can't deliver the goods then you'll spend weeks on the flank getting thrashed. Harsh, but it's a harsh business. If your kit isn't on the ball then it's obvious to the NCOs that you're a liability not worthy of moving forward.

Obviously, my comment has been misunderstood, I meant the USMC and RMC are different because the USMC is like the Army, because the USMC is its own large fighting force, not commando forces like the RMC. I never intended to say the RMC doesn't operated from air land and sea.

If you need a hug from the instructor then you're in the wrong game. You have to be self motivated to survive. It all changes when you get to your unit if you can deal with it. But you will be with professional soldiers, your peers, and there will be far more pressure to keep the standards up. I have to say, as a bloke that went through basic back in the late 80's - this looks like a walk in the park discipline wise.

I know the instructors are supposed to be hard and diciplined but i think this is too much, not once have they said "cmon your doing well, keep it up" or "you can do this, its a state of mind" they not showing juch encouragement to the marines

@RoyMM46 u c thats the problem, thats why you are losing the war in Afghanistan. You would think your gov and mod would learn for the past. You lost the Irish war 1919-21 due to your tactics and discipline, then guess wat caused a 30year war in ulster 1968-98? same reason yet again. Now you are deploying similar tactics in Afghanistan to that of Ireland. Does anybody in your government study History? "Those who don't remember the past are condemed to repeat it"
