Fun fact I learned from DYKG, the original Crash ran so quickly on its original consoles that people in the industry accused them of faking their demos with more powerful machines behind the scenes. Instead, they took advantage of physics to make the game play faster by filling the disk with a bunch of junk files on the interior of the disk, so all the playable parts were on the very edge of the disk which spins faster and resulted in shorter loading times. It also doubled as an anti-piracy measure as the crash files were huge for the level of internet that was popular back then.

@Thomas-te2lg7 жыл бұрын
Well to be fair, the first game (PS1) is pretty hard. I mean, trying to 100% that game is excessively difficult to the point I won't likely bother trying, the save system is cruel and outdated (even Bubsy 3D, one of worst 3D platformers in gaming history, had a proper save system and that game was in development around the same time as Crash Bandicoot), and some of levels in the game are freaking maddening (and I'm not talking about Bridge to Nowhere, The High Road or Slippery Climb, those levels are hard but they don't induce rage in me, Castle Machinery and The Lab on the other hand anger me to no end, I still haven't beaten The Lab). The later Crash games are nowhere near as hard as people make out to be, I have completed 95% of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and this is my first time playing the game, and it really that difficult, although it took about 50 minutes to 100% Cold Hard Crash.

Honestly my biggest issue with the collection is that the devs tried to make the level design be exactly the same as the original games but by not having the exact same programming for the jumping, this leads to moments of frustration in the first game that was tightly built around the precision platforming. Also the design of forcing you to 100% a level without dying to get regular gems was actually a programming error in the original, only the colored gems were supposed to be a one life challenge.

Kids used to be limited on how many games they could play, they had to squeeze them for all their worth, so they played the same game over and over until they got good at it. Now that games are more easily available they jump from one easy game to another and hit a brick wall when there's one with a little bit of challenge. Pathetically enough, it's apparently grown-ass adults that seem to have the most trouble with it; there's nothing 'professional' about these journos.

at the very least these old games are being exposed to a newer generation and that makes me happy. i love oldschool platformers, and hell i love 3d platformers. and both of those are very sorely lacking nowadays... mostly the 3d ones. not to mention how devs have just conditioned themselves to almost always make a game this streamlined process of rewards. that's fine every once in a while, but sometimes i want an actual challenge, and a game like crash provides that. though personally speaking the fact professional reviewers are so milktoast that they can't handle crash bandicoot, it's just... fuckin sad. yeah "Dark souls of platformers" tell that to all the kids int he 80's who were stuck playing the original ninja gaiden.

I'm kind of surprised you didn't mention that N.Sane was rebuilt practically from the ground up, as the dev team had little access to the original game assets due to them not being preserved (ironically the thing you were bringing up in this video). In this case I certainly can't find a fault with these remakes - practically 95% from scratch all over again and people are reporting how mostly true they still feel to the originals. What else could be done in this case? These remakes still preserve the essence of Crash, or try their hardest to meet it. As for game critics being unable to play Crash well...while I agree that they shouldn't rate N.Sane low because of the difficulty (these are intended to be true to the 90s games and should be judged accordingly) remember that kids have fewer responsibilities. I'll be honest with you, I'm focusing on more important stuff these days than video games, so naturally I'm not gonna be as hardcore (or even interested in it). These people have jobs, families. Of course, one could argue playing games is their job, but I'd argue "write us articles on deadlines, games be damned" is their true job ;) I personally would be okay if a critic admitted this openly while keeping in mind the spirit that N.Sane is intended for.

I think it was that and like a few character stuff. But the reports claim it was very few. Even the original code, had they had it, would have reportedly been unusable because it had weird stuff done to it to make it work on the PS1 hardware. So, for what they did here, it's pretty impressive.
@selensbelgiangachikoi31906 жыл бұрын
The fact that game critics are unable to play Crash well is mainly because game critics on the big platforms (IGN, Metacritic, etc) hardly play games... especially not finish them. Let's not forget they also dislike gaming as a whole anyway.

6:20 - Metroid Zero Mission is VASTLY different from its NES original, so there's no harm in adding in the first game as a bonus to compare. And both of those games were pretty short, all things considered, so mayhaps the inclusion was done to add some content. Meanwhile, we're getting three Crash Bandicoot platformers that do little more than update the grafiks, add time trial modes for Crash 1 and 2 and make Coco a playable character all throughout. Having the PS1 originals bundled in would seem a bit redundant (also, one can download the originals if you don't mind jumping back a console generation).
@PsypherWolf7 жыл бұрын
StaySkeptic I don't think that was the reason. Someone mentioned that the original games' files are unavailable, the assets are likely long lost so there would be no way of getting back the originals without redoing everything; at which point it's easier to just do what they did with the N. Sane trilogy.

In the remake on ice the landing animation will stop your momentum on the ice slightly, which is stupid.

@@fawfulmark2 Tekken 3 and resident evil 2 aren't in the league of Crash. They mask pop in by using the old school technique of having screens for RE2 and Tekken 3 is only a small fighting arena. Crash games were far more technical than both in graphics and loading. N64 games can't compare because they're blocky af because the PS1 can handle polygons more detailed. If you watch the video released this year where Andy Gavin is interviewed about the making of Crash you can see how he and the team went to Sony in order to find a way to unlock the PS1's hidden potential that was locked away by Sony's library. He also revolutionized loading technique so bigger levels could be made by not loading everything in at once. Tekken 3 definitely just slaps a level into RAM without any need of splitting the fighting stages into parts. RE2 I'm sure does the same as well.

I feel the same way about the Spyro remaster. The original Spyro trilogy had an ageless style and charm that the Pixar-esque, bloomed out remakes ruin for me. I think it's because worse graphics back in the day forced designers to make really concise, expressive characters. Maybe it's nostalgia goggles, but the enemies and NPCs in the remakes just look generic to me.
@sonicroachdoggjrraven32634 жыл бұрын
It’s not nostalgia goggles, don’t worry. As a child, the first Spyro game I played was the god awful Enter the Dragonfly and I had only played from then onwards and when Skylanders was revealed I was really sad that they changed him. Fast forward to 2018 and boom. I felt so happy to see they would reintroduce Spyro again. I went and bought the ps1 game on ps3 in excitement. When it finally came time to pick up my preorder I played the game and I see exactly what you mean. I really love the old chunky low poly models from the originals and they had such a warm charm to them compared to the new light bloom filled plastic look. I do still really love the new look, but the old one is more comfy.

5:10-5:20 is inaccurate af tho.... that's an alpha build of hang eight, the final build has hang eights room look MUCH darker.... infact they did it BECAUSE of these exact complaints.... most ofthe footage ur showing is previous builds. they dont actually show off the vibrant colors they actually DID end up putting into the game. like what about the levels in 2 that were set in "afternoon" lighting. those looked PHENOMINAL. i do agree with ur ending statement though. the fact that this game is MUCH easier now than it ever was and everyone is claiming it as "the Dark Souls of platformeers" brings me needless joy. it also gives me a lgeitinmate chance to ay "git gud"

I'd respect the N Sane Trilogy if they'd package the originals inside. Maybe its pointless, but it helps make the clear the choices and difference VV took when tackling the remake. Mostly, they made the hardest levels of Crash 1 ironically much harder (High road's platforms had a much larger margin of error in the OG), the end of Crash's jump now dramatically ramps up in speed, Ice physics are now rather inconsistent regarding momentum, enemy/platform hit boxes have peroidic bugs which cause some levels (like Hog Wild) to have screwed up hitboxes, etc. It's a nice remake, but its disappointing being only 30FPS, and by design it is no way a replacement for the originals like a true HD remaster would offer. But I guess its worth the price, and I'll buy it again if it releases on PC with 60FPS

0:15 Running through the SSR11's underpass chicane at full throttle in the first Gran Turismo is still pretty exciting. Sure, the physics engine is completely different, but it's real enough that it really helps to take a racing line around corners and be aware of the track's gradient.

I cannot agree with you on this video. I dont understand your exact point. You are saying that the remake is unnecessary because you can just play the old game, but then bash the remake because it is different from the old game? If you want the old graphics and style just play the old game. The remake changes things including graphics, that is one of the things that makes it interesting to play, it's an old experience with a twist. I don't think many people just want an exact replica of crash(ps1) that is released for the ps4(I am pretty sure you can buy and play ps1 games like crash exactly how they were, on the ps3 and maybe ps4). I for one am interested in SOTC remake, SOTC was an amazing looking game even back on ps2 and I cant wait to see how it will look on the ps4, and if they add or change a few things I am all for it, I own SOTC remaster on PS3 anyways so if I wanted the "exact same" experience I would play that instead. I will agree that releasing both the original game along with the remake/remaster is something that makes a lot of sense, especially when there are so many changes. Unfortunately, this involves potential money loss so no company would be willing to do it.
@omarct7 жыл бұрын
Then just play the original. What is your point? What exactly did you want from the remake? I am guessing you didn't want a remake at all. If so then why do you care if they make one? You are basically repeating the guy in the video.
@Miyazaki687 жыл бұрын
The issue isn't what WE get out of it, its what others who have never gotten to play the original before get out of it. I'm not interested in buying the same game again, or the same game with a few new things that make it worse, but i do care about game preservation. If they aren't preserving the original games when remaster or remaking, then the games are being lost, especially when the old consoles break down and have stopped manufacturing and we can no longer easily play the old versions legally.
@brandonontama24157 жыл бұрын
Miyazaki68 You do realise a good remake can prevent that right? And screw game preversion especially when the original did not age well.
@Miyazaki687 жыл бұрын
Sonic Badass prevent what exactly? And I would rather have people play the original game regardless if some people think it hasn't aged well, then have some inexperienced shovelware company trying to change the original vision, because that shit never works out unless the original team and director is involved (see, resident evil remake)
@omarct7 жыл бұрын
Miyazaki89 The problem with your argument about game preservation is that all the games that have been remastered or remade are easily playable on a PC with an emulator. So there was never a problem with playing the original exactly as it was. It feels like you guys are bitching about nothing. Complaining for the sake of complaining. Just because you aren't interested in experiencing old gems in a new way doesnt mean others arent. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to play FFXII remaster is because of all the things they added including the revamped class system. If I just want the same old experience I can just take 20 minutes to download the iso for my ps2 emulator.

I didn't like the way the graphics and environments in Ocarina of Time 3DS were brightened up either. It completely changes the tone of the game, the feel of entire areas and the themes that were being conveyed in them. Take the Sacred Forest Meadow area, for instance. One of my favorite locations in all the TLoZ series. In N64 graphics it's this dark, misty place but with the same visual quirks of the whole Lost Woods/Kokiri forest area. This set the meadow apart from the Kokiri village as this warm, cozy, whimsical environment. The Sacred Forest Meadow was like a darker, more foreboding antithesis of that, conveying the feeling that the forest area is not as safe or wholesome as the innocent Kokiri kids seem to believe and maybe has a dark sinister history. This theme ties into a major presiding theme that reoccurs throughout the whole adventure. But with the whole game glossed over in ninty's irritating cartoon-style they've got such a raging hard on for, that message is lost. Don't even get me started on the Graveyard or Shadow Temple and well. Those places look down right ridiculous bathed in toon gloss. And it completely wrecks what are supposed to be the games most overtly freaky areas.
@ImusakHctividar6 жыл бұрын
I can certainly see your points in the vid, though there is one thing that they did that I would say ramps up the difficulty slightly. From what I've seen the platforms aren't physically boxed-shaped anymore because the edges have slight curves, which means the precious platforming has to be that much more precise, otherwise people might slide off the edges of a platform. I've seen it happen then play a little myself to experiment. It's not noticeable if you're good enough to land in the center of the platforms, but if you're still new and might otherwise just barely make it in the originals you'll instead just miss the mark.

I thought overall it was a decent remake that makes it more accessible but I had some complaints as well. The music, while good, lacked the punch the original track had on some stages (in particular, the chase levels), and some of the sound effects are missing/weak. The color palette made some boss fights unnecessarily more frustrating, such as Cortex in Crash 1. You can barely tell the blue and purple projectiles apart from one another. Also, adding the two-at-a-time box collection from the filled crates made some of the bonuses in the earlier games aggravating at times because they weren't designed with that in mind. The first game were dumbed down with hints telling you how to find secrets as well; I guess it just saves time now that the internet is a big thing, so it was somewhat forgivable at least. I also was disappointed that they didn't make the hitboxes better in a remake as well; in fact, some enemies felt even worse (Seals in the second game especially), and the some of the new camera angles give you more poor depth perception than the original game.

Ok then, I'll rephrase my question. Why do so many people seem to want this remake of Shadow of the Colossus? Is there something wrong with the original game? Is it in desperate need of updating? The HD remaster of Shadow of the Colossus isn't unapproachable by new audiences by any means besides that fact that it's exclusive to the PS3. Why aren't we just getting a port of the remaster to ps4? Because then it can't be priced at a full $60.

Hey! You didn't even mention the amazing animation work done on the characters in the N.Sane trilogy. The new graphics style really brings to life models that were previously dull, static polygons in the original games. I think of things like Coco's frustration as her battery dies, and Cortex's feigned drama to get Crash's sympathy in the floating head warp room talks from Crash 2. It's incredibly campy and cartoony, and it's great! I just wish there were more cutscenes to take advantage of them.

I absoloutly agree. The atmosphere has changed drastically. And atmosphere is such a delicate and subtle thing that most people aren't even conscious of it and the tiniest changes can screw it up. So I definitely prefer the atmosphere of the originals. And to me, graphics get outdated quickly, but good atmosphere is timeless. It's a shame that this N Sane trilogy couldn't preserve it.
@rhysf.5055 жыл бұрын
Yup. All of these remakes suffer from the same problem and that is turning everything into a babyish Pixar movie. The PS1 games always had a level of edginess that Nintendo and Sega didn't, which I enjoyed. Now they've completely gotten rid of that with both Spyro and Crash.

To be fair, part of the reason so many people are struggling with this new remake is because they removed some of crash's innate mobility, but didn't adjust level geometry to compensate. Crash can't make it as far in one jump now, and he has a hitbox shape that allows him to slide off the edges of boxes and other shapes. This means any tricky levels just became even more difficult to get through.

So, the slide not being in Crash 1 was my one big niggle with this remaster however, a 2017 game 2with Sony having a mid-step console out for almost a year running a 30fps on both consoles is kind of ridiculous. I don't think that Shadow of the Colossus comment was very valid. Wanting nicer graphics for a game you like doesn't mean the maturity of the game isn't for you. Personally, I want it so I can own it on PS4 and won't have to buy a PS3 or PS2. I've never played it, but I want it for the game and not the visuals. But i can understand being a bit more picky about the art design in a game like Shadow. I think it's also to capitalize on The Last Guardian.

The Angry Little Alchemist Ehhh. There's a possibility that some atmosphere and such might be overlooked. I think it'll be pretty for it's own good. @Zeburaman20057 жыл бұрын
+The Angry Little Alchemist Are you arguing that the original graphics didn't have any impact in a game revolving around its foreboding and gloomy atmosphere? Preposterous! I can understand wanting an updated version for your hardware, but they could simply make the HD Remaster available on PS4. At least that one didn't fuck with the graphics, stripping the game of its ambiance.
@TheXBRGUY7 жыл бұрын
Uh...that's literally the exact opposite of what I was saying. How could you misunderstand that badly? "But i can understand being a bit more picky about the art design in a game like Shadow." Also, I don't see many people arguing that the game is less foreboding or gloomy in the remake. There's certainly negatives to the remake but even Matthewmatosis, a HUGE fan of the game couldn't really say anything negative about the remake. Just that something was a tad off. Hopefully they fix whatever it is before it releases
@Zeburaman20057 жыл бұрын
It's probably because you used the term "nicer graphics", which is a bit too vague and that mislead me. As a film buff and hardcore gamer at heart, I often found that simply overhauling the visual aspect of a game (or film) while keeping the exact same gameplay (or synopsis) could prove extremely detrimental, and even self-defeating, to the experience as a whole. Of course, I would hold back my full opinion until I can actually play the game. Is the remake out yet? I'm a tad out of the loop these days regarding games releases.
