This is a CRASH COURSE in REAL street defense against ONE opponent at a time, but can be applied against more than one. It is important to protect MOST those parts of your head that will leave you fighting with a handicap. You want to protect the following for the following reasons:
1) TEMPLE: Sense of balance
2) EARS: EQUILIBRIUM
3) EYES: VISION
4) NOSE: If BROKEN will cause blood to back into the throat.
5) LIPS and MOUTH injuries: NOTHING hurts worse than a mouth injury because of the ALKALI in human SALIVA.
6) SIDES of the JAW: They are the KO points.

Finally we get someone who no's there shit about self defense you no they no when they talk about fine motor skills which is traditional martial artists vs gross motor skills which is what comes out when your under distress

READ BEFORE COMMENTING: I am EXAGGERATING in some places in this video to make a point. I would, under most circumstances NOT choose to BEND INTO AN UPPERCUT. I am doing so here to show you how the SURFING of the head helps avoid maximum damage from the uppercut. If I DID bend into the uppercut, it would be for 2 reasons primarily: 1) To Damage the attacking hand with my ELBOW or 2) To meet the UPPERCUT BEFORE its point of power was reached.

Once again you deliver hard hitting (pun intended lol) truths on real fighting almost none of these bjj/mma gyms don't know.I love how you acknowledge factors that other people fail to realize such as the environment, person's mental state,etc.I always found those "guards " to be unrealistic as mkst people don't have conditioned limbs for such things.That's why it's best to have "soft" skills to avoid unnecessary fights.

The safe mode explanation is best I've seen. Now I understand that sm styles that use a lot of "shapes" will get into trouble cause its too complicated

Boxing is simple and straight to the point.I feel like people try to complicate fighting styles to overcompensate for their lack of physical and/or spiritual strength.

@@KWillo Exactly this, some people would be pathetically weak and instead of trying to become physically stronger they try to "invent" 10 step complicated moves to "beat" people who are physically superior, and end up over complicating stuff that is very simple at the base level.

My trainer out of North Philly in his 70s. I know and appreciate you're from the ol school when you said look at them hands coming under those hooks. It keeps you honest lol Another good thing, I'm 5'6 and slapping the straight shots from taller opponents became instinctual. I was not trying to get hit lol

After depleting his body and reflexes by draining himself 30 or more lbs to make weight, James Toney walked away after his fight with a prime Roy Jones Jr without being knocked out or seriously hurt by doing exactly what you describe in this video for a large part of their fight.

@@TheUmmahFightCamp It's funny, but you put this video out right when I needed it, after finding out in the gym that I really only had slipping and a shoulder roll for defense 😂 I went back home and picked apart James Toney's Super Middleweight fight with Ricky Thomas, and I finally realized how active his high guard was! He would squeeze his wrists, elbows, and forearms together to pick off straight shots from the outside, and placed them on the outside of his head and swiveled his elbows to either slide shots off or slip inside or back outside at hooking and uppercut range! I hear Toney talk about Rocky Marciano all the time, and one of the things that I think made them both so great and unbeatable when they were at their best was that they understood and used each guard supplementally and preferred to keep their hands free, rather than having to stick to any one "Style". I understand what Ali meant now when he said Marciano would have been difficult because he had no style! It was mind blowing when it hit me lol

Great instructional video as always sir! I have a couple of technical questions. 1. With the defense against hook punches, would this also work against a longer looping type of punch or a forearm smash type of attack? Im worried that turning my head will inadvertently expose the back of my head to the punch. Like when Roy Jones was knocked out by Danny Green, it looked to me in the slow mo replay, that Roy was trying to turn with the punch and ended up getting caught in the back of the head by Greens punch. Or, will the tilting of the head and/or a duck as you described take care of that problem? 2. In a sporting context, these would work all the same. I would like to know if the head tilt is safe to use against head kicks? Like, if someone fakes a hook then comes up with a head kick, can I still use this type of block, or will the force of a shin on my dome be too risky and should I adjust using a higher guard or something? Thanks in advance. Always appreciate your technique vids👍🏾

Could a long guard be a good general maneuver to get away from surprise blows or sucker punches? The only few street fights I've been in i felt instinctual to use it only when being surprised. I have never use it for a prolonged period though after the attack. Great video

Sayf, is it possible to condition your mind to not completely short-circuit when put under duress in a street fight situation? Would the only way to do this be hard (but safe) sparring? Thank you for the video, Sir. This channel has taught me so much.

Absolutely, I know this is an old comment and you very well may have gotten your answer on your own by now. But safe and technical sparring to improve your skills with hard sparring to test your skills occasionally sprinkled in is the way to go. Upgrading the hardware without damaging the software as the saying goes
