Fun fact: The Trabant in 1957, the Autowerke Zwickau P70 in 1955, the Lloyd 400 in 1953 and a Goliath model from 1950 were all production cars that had transversely mounted engines before the Mini. This is more commonly known, but the Citroen Traction Avante was also the first popular car with front wheel drive and came about in the 1930s, though it had a longitudinally mounted engine.
@mattiasjohansson17272 жыл бұрын
Yes. The thing is that they had relatively small 2-cylinder 2-stroke engines meaning that the gearbox could still fit at the end of the engine. Both Zwickau and Trabant were inspired by the pre-war 2-cylinder DKW engineering, so was the Saab 92 that also used a transverse 2-cylinder 2-stroke. What the Mini did was to be able to fit a 4 cylinder transversely by having an arrangement with the gearbox in the oil sump.

I think it's likely they choose cars that have problems(would be cheaper anyway), albeit ones that don't affect crash results. Any car model has accidents(including being hit by other cars). Newer cars are probably at least as likely to be able to avoid accidents, but still have a lot of crash safety features,

That puts more of the force into it's passengers (remember all those nasty bit inside you mentioned). I didn't need this stupid video to show this (& it doesn't, because the cars are empty). Having owned a classic Mini and been involved in two accidents in it, I can attest that, when it comes to collisions, a Mini is pretty much the most dangerous car you could be driving. It doesn't stop them being fantastic cars, though.

ava1990,how bad was the crash?were you going 60 mph in it?
@AVV_Beats7 жыл бұрын
In my first collision, the Mini locked up under braking on a frosty morning, and slid into the back of a car. I was travelling at about 30mph. On the second occasion, the car in front of me braked sharply. I did too, stopping before hitting the car, but a van behind me did not react quickly enough, shunting into the back of the Mini at about 30mph and pushing it into the car in front. The lack of headrests on the Mini model I owned meant I suffered pretty bad whiplash.
@edydj96717 жыл бұрын
ava1990,so you broke your neck twice?and did you broke other parts of your body too?
@AVV_Beats7 жыл бұрын
On neither occasion did I break my neck. I was unharmed in the first collision. Whilst the damage to the car I hit was barely noticeable, the damage to the Mini was substantial. In the second collision, the whiplash caused neck pain for about two years afterwards. Again, the damage to the van that hit me was minimal, the damage to the Mini was huge. If anyone had been sitting in the back seat, they would have been seriously hurt.
@TerpDaveW7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing the details of your experience. I can appreciate designs that are unique in history and applaud those who have the money and time to restore and maintain them for show value. But it is sad that some will restore a li’l car like the original Mini then give it to their teen as a first car, or perhaps worse, to use it as a “daily driver” in traffic where the chances of a life-threatening accident are much greater since so many more people drive pickup trucks and SUVs, because their mass and physical size give people a false sense of increased safety. HATS OFF to the testing group Fifth Gear for showing us that even though that Mini was very tiny and allegedly not designed for crash worthiness, the structure held up quite well in their simple backyard crash test. I wonder how it would perform if outfitted with a decent seat, three point seat belt with pretensioners and air bags in front and to the sides? Viewing current videos on IIHS or NCAP will make you gasp for air when you see how miserably most small cars perform, despite computer aided modeling and design! Sure MPG is an important concern, but what about the imminent risk of life and limb of you and your family or other passengers, every time you climb into these “go kart’s” from China, Korea, and even Japan!

Not sure why so many people are triggered by this test. You need to remember this was filmed in the mid noughties, probs around 2006/2007. It predates the scrappage scheme, and it's only around 7 years after production of the mini ended. The mini was still abundant back then, you could pickup a good example for less than a grand, it's not like today when even a poor example cost over a grand. Back then a poor example with have either ended up banger raced, or scrapped.

Give me the mini with a good set of seat belts every time. There is enough to crumple the main thing is the passenger area was not deformed. Having been in a few accidents in my earlier years when the mini and others were as good as it gets except with seat belts. I can tell you a mark 2 escort in a roll over at about 50MPH was almost the death of me as the roof collapsed to the height of the seat backs, my brother was creamed in a 1965 holden (0pel like but local design) sedan which made the front end only 20 inches high when he was hit and spun under a HGV trailer, My sister in law was hit by a HGV in a similar car which had the front from the fire wall torn off in the accident but the rest of the car looked perfect and was put back on the road with just the complete front end replaced as it all bolted on including the sub frame. The worst injury received in these 3 accidents was my brother had 16 fractures in his right knee cap since his knee hit the steel dash of his car when it stopped hard, I got a couple of bruises and my sister in law and her daughter had no injuries. Simply because we were all wearing seat belts.

the mini might be showing its age.. a little, but shows just how advanced it was. I love the look of the mini, its handling, even by todays standard is brilliant.

Stop smashing things up, how old are you, 5? There's enough destruction in the world - you could have given the car to a classic car club or to a family that needs it.
@Hammer01657 жыл бұрын
To be honest, that Mini faired surprisingly well. There was clearly some rust on the car, which should have made the impact more devestating, but still the passenger cell remained intact. Sure, the lack of airbags and designated crumple zones would pose a danger at higher crash speeds, but at 25mph, the G-forces of the impact in the Mini (which does, in fact, have proper seat belts) would not have caused considerably more discomfort than the airbag of the newer cars blowing up in your face. All in all, when used in city traffic, this only proves the Mini isn't significantly unsafer to the passengers than a new car. I wouldn't be too sure about pedestrians, though.

I agree to disagree. When the Smart car got crash tested, it was revealed that its stiff frame structure survived but didn't absorb the impact energy - which goes right to the passenger. Even in lower speeds, with the Tridion cell staying fully intact, Smart car passengers will suffer severe injuries due to Smarts inability to erase impact energy. I think the almost 60 year old Mini construction didn't perform bad at all.

this video again convinces me to keep my old mini alive as long as I will live. I am impressed that the MINi performed the crash test much better than I expected. The Mini scores in indoor space/outside size ratio over Alan new micro car. Roadholding exceptionally good, fuel economy acceptable and performance still enjoyable with a slightly modified 1300ccm engine. And it is a lot easier to repair than a modern car. I have a rare Innocenti Mini Cooper , it attracts a lot more attention and sympathy than any Ferrari or Rolls Royce. Of course Safety is an important issue. But I drive a lot more often than having accidents.

Well said. Sadly this video is full of 14 year old wankers preferring their mom's Hyundai over an iconic and fun car. They're not car guys anyways.

Chris Williams By saying the mini sucks what I meant is that it sucks compared to the Lexus the mini it self isn't bad its better than the Fiat 500 and Zastava 750 witch is a version from my country but still mini is a city car and the Lexus is a Limousine so they aren't in the same class it's still a good city car for it's time for today's standards it's unsafe and underpowered.

As an ex panel beater I can say that if the mini was more than a few years old the floor would be rusted out, as would the A post. No reinforcement in the door. Insanely loud and not good on fuel. The 1300 was probably less trendy but better. Nostalgia with little basis.

That could be said for most classic cars. I love Mini, the most + old jags and Range Rover Classics. God know why I like the latter? thirsty, slow and badly behaved. Nothing like me, of course! What fool, apart multi millionairs, collects classic cars?

As the owner of a 1980 Mini 1000, I'll throw my opinion in here. Obviously it sucks to see one in fairly good condition destroyed, and I hope Fifth Gear at least parted out what remained in good condition. Seeing how the mini handled a crash like that was interesting, but I wish they had done it in a more scientific way, i.e. measuring the internal forces on dummy's etc..

That's Nothing! We had a couple mini's in the 60's (old fart alert). The door windows were over lapping sliders and the only thing inside the door panel was your elbow! There was no inner door panel, no window regulator and no inner door crash protection. The door opener was a pull cable and there was a bit of vinyl glued to the inside of the outside door skin for trim. When I was 8 years old that actually felt a little concerning to me, but it didn't stop me from having a blast driving it around the farm roads.
