@@8bits59 he means that the car overall is not modified in structure, but for this kind of stunt is mandatory to take out the airbags because the driver already has a helmet and if they deploy they can cause unnecesary damage to a human body, and i say unnecesary because they already have the helmet so the head wont hit the steering, but the airbag will cause the same damages as normally, like wounds, burns because of the gas, whiplash, damage in the muscles, etc etc. But overall the car is not modified, just with the Airbag system deactivated.

I remember reading about yielding lampposts way back in the 1980s. The authors were impressed how car drivers might survive hitting one of those. However, (same as in this vid) they ignored that the lamppost would work like a mighty steel whip possibly snapping at bystanders and killing some in the process. Not much was heard from that idea since. But these sign posts seem to let drivers live without wreaking havoc among pedestrians, so: good job, deploy!

On controlled access and high speed roads these are probably a good idea. In an urban area where there are likely to be many pedestrians, if you can't survive hitting a sign post with your car, a pedestrian probably also couldn't survive being hit by your car at the same speed, and I think you'd be better off lowering vehicle speeds or improving pedestrian safety than worrying about the safety of drivers hitting road side obstacles.

The thing is, 1. When a car hit a lamppost or signpost, it usually is in a sideway position due to prior loss of control. That's why the Euro NCAP tests pole collision sideway. 2. I am sure the conventional signposts were already designed in such a way that they compromise the collision safety, wind resistance, and cost. I wonder how this would go according to those criteria. We cannot just think about collision safety without any consideration of cost.

Many if not all interstate signs here in the US use aluminum I-beams with slip footers. Slotted holes for the bolts that extend to the end of the connection plate and the base plate rather than regular closed holes in the steel plate. They're designed so that the sign pole "slips" off the base plate and they disconnect from each other. Former FDOT contractor edit: as an addition, street light poles are designed with a breakaway base and quick-disconnect terminals for the wiring so upon impact the base breaks away and the pole + wiring safely frees from the footer

That 2nd pole test was a COMPLETE FAILURE. He is lucky the middle bolt got stuck, if it were one of the two side bolts, the pole would go sideways, making the car jump sideways and everything will go sideways.

I don't think the first crash would be fatal. The car barely slows down at all, the crash energy is transferred into rotation. Car maintains speed, rotates, tires grip and it rolls. Seat belt on and you walk out like nothing happened.

The occasional sign post is nothing, compared to the millions of trees, and I have managed to avoid all of them. Should we have the trees removed too? Cowardice seems to be the order of the day, these days.
