This is the type of accident caused, not by excessive speed, but by people dawdling along at half the speed limit. Other drivers get frustrated, and overtake in stupid places because the selfish old duffer in a Prius is too timid to drive at the ambient speed. It's these people who are the real killers on the roads.

This is the most terrifying Fifth Gear crash test. Not the 120mph one, that one was clearly just circus level entertainment. This is a real scenario with ordinary cars and ordinary speeds, and the noise and destruction is just terrible to see and hear.

However, I think some people develop a false sense of security knowing they're behind the wheel of a vehicle with 4 or 5 star ratings when in reality they're moving at more than twice those test-speeds on motorways & highways, with closing-speeds doubling that! Worst thing is that with many drivers are obsessed with being somewhere asap & driving above the speed-limits, they often take ridiculous risks overtaking which often tragically have disastrous consequences, especially if a truck is involved! &B^{C?

Actually most accidents happen at 40MPH. How? Idk. But say u r driving at 70MPH, when some dumbass driving a Ford Scorpio who thinks he is driving a sports car pulls in front of u suddenly, u brake, and by the time u hit Scorpio Man U r doing around 35-45MPH

+StevieRay9O I agree, and people also are way too overconfident in their driving skills. They think because they might've managed to miss some bad accidents, that they're invincible, but they aren't. It's like when someone pulls out and the other car purposely speeds up. That is reckless driving.

A couple of years ago me, my sister, and my dad were almost in the same accident. We were driving an 02 astra and someone else was driving another car. As we were going down the A143 the other car overtook on a bend and if my dad hadn't swerved out the way at the exact moment he did then this would have happened. Kinda makes you think. Doesn't help that I drive an identical silver astra. I wanna upgrade to a safer newer car lol. Edit: spelling

Looked like a small overlap test rather than a frontal offset. If you look up the NCAP ratings for the SO, which was only officially introduced about 5 years ago, most modern cars didn't fare too much better.

Problem is that safest car would have long hood, that would scrap in one piece like tin can. But because they can't do that, they have to use more rigid design on the front of the car. Too rigid means no impact absorbed in the cars metal and you are the only one absorbing it all. Too "soft" means impact is absorbed, but not enough to stop metal crushing you. So you are dead either by metal and other components (soft version) or G forces (rigid version). In rally cars drivers survive because they have safety gear and because they are pretty much not moving at all (bucket seats and 4 point safety belt). But that can't be done in modern cars, because two cars colliding with roll bars would mean instant death by G forces applied to internal organs.

BluWarta92 You are right. Just to add - the roll bars are not as safe as they seem to be - road regulation laws don't allow 'em for reason: you are not obligated to drive the car with a helmet on the street. The road cars have flexible plastic interior panels, so you don't crash your skull when it bounce off the dash, the front seat or side-columns. So for driver, unequipped with bucket-seat, helm and collar would rather smash his skull in the exposed steel pipes. This is what actually is the helmet designed for - it's ment to be crashed - when a sharp object penetrate the shell, it get stuck in the foam, which absorbs most of the hit and the remain energy is re-spread on wider area, so the skull remain in one piece (not to mention they have expiration date 'cuz the glue, keeping the foam & shell together spoils). The type of the race car also input some requirements: rally is a time-trial type of race, so no overtakes, no other vehicles that may cause danger, so the cars are prepared to meet only the most common static objects: bushes, thees, rock piles... it must resist rollovers, mainly, and the speed is relatively low flat-out is around 200km/h, and on the tricky sections rarely exceed 90-130km/h. But when it comes to group-races like Le Mans.. DTM, there just a roll-cage is not enough. There are impact modules (the cones) - on sides & front, the pilot's seat is moved as possible to the middle, to open more space for these; the bolts - connecting the mid-mounted engines to the cockpit are designed to snap without damage the cage.. many other things.. (ok, I don't know 'em all..) :)

+Mau506 actually, it was more that all cars sucked. You're looking at two cars from the 90's, and crash safety back then wasn't what it is now. As they spend their time explaining, that this was an offset crash and older cars weren't designed with offsets in mind. Modern cars are significantly more beefed up at the front in order to distribute the load of an offset crash across the whole front of the car, making it safer for you because in a modern vehicle the energy of the crash goes into crusing the engine bay instead of the passenger compartment. In these 90's era cars, there's none of that beefing up and consequently half of the front of the car takes all the energy of the impact, meaning half of the crash energy still has to be dissapated into the passenger compartment. The body peeled off the chassis rails of both cars, and both cars had extremely thin roof pillars and doors. Volvo and BMW where among the best of the 90's, and this is the best that engineers had come up with at the time.

+Managarmr420 It is true that new cars are much more improved- But there is no way you could expect survival- The lab tests are 35-40 MPH- against a stationary block- These cars are moving at 60mph each way- The resulting force is the total mass x acceleration of 120mph- umm survivability low. Even worse as the offset means only half the structure was impacted directly- Both cars may have faired better on a direct impact although survival rates would still be low.
