I don't think age would matter for an accident like this because whoever is in the smaller car will still die or, in very very rare instances, be critically injured. Many SUVs still have the stiffer parts of their front ends positioned higher up than ordinary cars and if they strike above the B-pillar, the SUV will still power through the side of the smaller car regardless. Maybe new technology would make it more survivable for those in the SUV but no way for the smaller car.

I always do a quick calculation of the height of my opponent's chassis rails when deciding whether or not to give way on narrow streets. The good news is that chavs with stiffened and lowered suspensions tend to have chassis rails that are practically on the floor, so it's all good.

I'll tell you something about a near road accident I had encountered. It was 2 years ago, I was travelling 95-100 km/h on a rural open road coming across an intersection then, a driver in an Alfa Romeo coupe turned right in front of me. I had to slam on the brakes. Otherwise, this similar scenario would have happened if my car didn't have ABS brakes or worse still, brake failure would occur. It wasn't fun at all.

Yes the Smart car has a stiffer body than the Mitsubishi, but the bonnet area (crumple zone) would go underneath the Mitsubishi and then stop, but the 4x4 would crush the front end completely, and it weighs more, so it has an advantage there to, in this crash everybody would have died, but a Smart car is lower, lighter and will get destroyed by a 4x4.

& then there is HGV’s. An HGV chassis is two massive ‘ i ‘ beams that run the whole length of the vehicle. HGV’s have no independent front suspension as well. So stay out the way of an HGV.

@HondaCRX am sorry i sold mine brother. The transmission gave up on me every time i breath to hard on it .. Well Honda company started as a motorcycle company and in the early days when they shifted to manufacturing cars their prototypes had issues .. and honda problem (in the early days) was the transmission. mine was an automatic by the way. Still It will always be held in special place in my heart as my 1st car. And yeah Honda CRX is a really cool car by the way !! It was every 90s generation teenager dream car!! To be fair honda got some outstanding legendary indestructible collection from the 90s that can be seen rolling on the streets today. Sorry for the book.

Crikey. For a man who regularly drives around in a 1981 Triumph Acclaim with zero safety kit other than front seatbelts, this is truly terrifying. I diss modern cars for their ugly design and overcomplicated electronic gadgets, but you do have to admit seeing this, they do make sense from a safety standpoint. I love my classics, but if I had children, there's no way I'd put them in the back of one.

My mom was in a crash like this. She was in a Volkswagen Golf. She was hit from the side by a Nissan Titan at 30 mph. My mom was already starting to go through the intersection, but the Titan just kept going at 30 mph through the light. She came out with a few bruises and a few scratches.

The 4x4 was doing 60. I can't imagine that would happen in real life. One vehicle T-boning another at 60 because on any road with 60 as the speed limit there would be many signs warning drivers of a junction ahead, combined with the word "SLOW" on the road. Plus any driver with a brain cell would brake for a junction instead of trying to crash the gate at the speed limit. Plus the driver of the 30 mph car would have seen the 4x4 howling along and braked, hung behind the junction and watched the chaos.

What you actually are describing, is safety development. Newer cars are built tougher from the passenger space of the vehicle. Smart has to be tough from every direction only because there is no space for crumble zones. But even a modern small car, would still not survive well from this crash, because the speed is very high. When speed doubles, kinetic energy will be 4 times as much. Newer SUV's are more friendly, as their front is not so solid anymore, instead there is a crumble zone as well.

sure. I get why people like small cars. you can go fast, drive it like a little race car. you get great gas mileage if that's a priority.. which to many people it is. and some of them have some really nice features. theres lots of bad about them too. being so low its a lot harder to see traffic, if you do a lot of carpooling and need to haul ppl around lots its very cramped. if you decied to move furniture or anything larger than a couple backpacks you basically have to borrow or rent a bigger vehicle. sure, trucks and suvs are thirsty as hell, sure its harder to park than a little car. but I can do 10x's more with a truck than most people who buy a little car to save on gas(and trucks or suvs naturally have higher resale value than the vast majority of cars). safety due to sheer size and the ability to move almost anything without needing help is a huge deal for me at least, and for lots of other people as well, so I don't mind if my vehicles are a little bit thirsty :)

So you have a winter car/truck and a summer car? I presume that's because the gritted roads effectively rot the car inside out?
