NiggaBlossom well I guess we don't have much left now do we. With our low population, our reservations under attack and many other problems going on we have to make a living too but I guess it wouldn't be the land of the free without pushing down the people who lived here in the beginning.

Agreed! I think I would have actually enjoyed learning history if my teachers had taught more of the "why?" questions addressed here, and shared the history instead of the mythology. It was such rote memorization of name-date-place, name-date-place.
@Gufberg
@Gufberg 10 жыл бұрын
Kate C. Thats interesting. Where i come from this is considered the old discredited school of History. Modern history teachers (again, where i come from) focus almost exclusively on the "why" and don't care too much if you misremember an event by a few years or a decade. And you're right, that approach is very conductive to the appreciation of History.

In the spirit of accuracy (leaving out the political innuendo), the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts does not nor ever did have the picture of an Indian with the words in a 'bubble' saying: "Come over and Help Us". That seal was used by the "Massachusetts Bay Colony". It was used from 1629-1686 when it was 'annulled' and then again from 1689-1692. So, yes it was used by the MBC, but has NOT been used for 324 years. To quote John "... the Massachusetts seal WHICH FEATURES (which infers it is the current seal) an Indian saying: "Come over and help us". (emphasis added). John, mispronouncing things is OK in this format, but not giving false/misleading information.

Red priest I am not among pigs. Well I am not happy that American indians were largely destroyed. And Peace should always be sought as much as possible, but sometimes peace is impossible, and then somebody got ta die. Would you rather be living in a grass and mud community tribal hut, and have to be in the position of destroying the United States, would that be better? And try talking about the great indian spirit which is related to corn or animals, maybe you could go into a shaman indian trance getting high on whatever. Indian destruction is real sad, but what would you have done, and What can you do now?

1. The first English Settlers came to the Chesapeake area (now Virginia) in 1607. 2. Both the European and the Indigenous traded goods that they had in surplus to those they did not. The English were happy to give up iron utensils, tools, guns, woven cloth, in exchange for furs and, especially in the early days, food which the Indians could easily part with because they had plenty. 3. John Smith is important to the Indian and European story because when he left Virginia for England after being injured in a gunpowder explosion, things between the Native Americans and the English immediately began to deteriorate. 4. The English went back to stealing the indians crops and also began stealing their lives (they killed a lot of the Indians) 5. In 1675, Native Americans launched their biggest attack on New England colonists in what would be known as King Philips War.

Hello John Greene, I do not know if you read the comments, however I do hope you pass over mine and give a quick thought, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your videos on history, they are very helpful, and I must say you can really teach, question, "Did you ever consider being a teacher?" Because you will be an extraordinary one! thanks again, I am sure to pass the AP U.S History Exam with nothing else but your help. Bye! :)

WildRosechan we’d be hundreds of years behind in technology. It’s a hallmark of human history that a stronger power comes in and wipes out a weaker one. It’s happened that way for thousands of years.

Listening to John Green tell me these things, and learning about these things in school in more, well, scholarly ways really affects my emotions. For example, I never read about the severed head on a stake kept outside the Plymouth colony....now I know.................

I'm older than my life expantancy as an american Indian living in america. Most americans are only mid-life at my age. History gives a context to understand our lives. Thank you crash course for devoting several percentages of your series' time and effort toward my people, to say something of the redman. This was never mentioned when I was in conform school. I disagree that dogs were a net downer for the nations. Many americans are realizing we are all on the rez now. or is your fridge full?

It's always weird learning Native American history, because in Hawaii, we learn about the crap that the Hawaiians went through, and it's always amazing how much more crappy other natives get treated. So thank you John, for teaching me more things I never learned in school.

It's also phrased English vs natives. In reality a huge percentage of native people fought on the English side. Entire tribes converted to Christianity and joined the colonies. There were also towns created for natives that choose to live like the English. I think it is so sad that these natives stories are always forgotten about when taking about the arrival of the English.

So as of like 30 minutes ago, this video may have possibly saved my life. I was at home and heard the door slam open and close while I was watching this for class. I had my neighbors come over to check cause my moms at the airport and my dad was thirty minutes away. Lately, there's been sightings of gang members in my area and one was caught a couple doors down with an AR-15. I called my neighbors and we didn't find anyone but we think if anyone did come in the sound of the video playing at full volume may have scared them off. So thanks John Green for helping me survive dual credit AND possibly scare away a robber.

Have you ever thought about translating the your subtitles into Spanish? The canned ones that the video does with an automatic translator aren't the best and sometimes miss out on context. II have a ton of students who struggle with the English being so fast and it would be very beneficial to them to have subtitles in their native language!

I met the Pueblo Tribe not too long ago and saw them greet the sun on the first day of the year. It was below zero weather and they were performing their rituals in loincloths and not much else, while we stood there in 4 layers of winter clothing freezing our behinds off. My first though was: how the hell did these people lose to us? Pueblos are tough as hell.

They followed mercantile theory, which basically said more land = more wealth = more power. They were in a constant war with France, so they took America to generate more work and thus more goods and thus more wealth. The whole plan was to just get as rich as possible so that they could be better than France.

I'm English so this is going to be fascinating. I'm interested in how the English behaved on native american soil before the country became the united states of america. Everything historical always seems to talk about americans with american accents etc. but I have always been curious about how it was to be English in native america.

5:15 "This was such a concern that in 1642, the Massachusetts general court prescribed a sentence of three years hard labor for anyone who left the colony and went to live with the indigenous people" I was thinking of using this info for an essay about Native American history comparing it to current events- has anyone found a different site that confirms this? I couldn't find anything but it would really help me make a statement. Thanks!

Hey I'm addicted to your videos. I couldn't find where to contact you directly so I'll just comment here. I've always had an interest in history and minored in it in college just for fun. Where did you learn so much and where do you work out of? I'm an American currently living in Spain and love the history here. If you ever need a topic, I wouldn't mind seeing you guys do Al-Andalus and Castile-Leon, or the Spanish Civil War (which was much more important than most people realize in shaping WW2). Just an idea for when you guys are looking for a topic. Anyway, keep 'em coming.
