When is Thanksgiving? Colonizing America: Crash Course US History #2

In which John Green teaches you about the (English) colonies in what is now the United States. He covers the first permanent English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the various theocracies in Massachusetts, the feudal kingdom in Maryland, and even a bit about the spooky lost colony at Roanoke Island. What were the English doing in America, anyway? Lots of stuff. In Virginia, the colonists were largely there to make money. In Maryland, the idea was to create a colony for Catholics who wanted to be serfs of the Lords Baltimore. In Massachusetts, the Pilgrims and Puritans came to America to find a place where they could freely persecute those who didn't share their beliefs. But there was a healthy profit motive in Massachusetts as well. Profits were thin at first, and so were the colonists. Trouble growing food and trouble with the Natives kept the early colonies from success. Before long though, the colonists started cultivating tobacco, which was a win for everyone involved if you ignore the lung cancer angle. So kick back, light up a smoke, and learn how America became profitable. DON'T SMOKE, THOUGH! THAT WAS A JOKE!
Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. Modern Native Americans have varied perspectives on Thanksgiving and the start of European colonization in America. Chuck Larsen's Plymouth Thanksgiving Story reveals a new native and anthropological take on the famous first Thanksgiving meal: www.commonlit.org/texts/the-p...

Hi John, did you know your Crash Course videos are official high school curriculum now? My son is a high school student in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in Houston, and even though it's Saturday night, he's diligently watching your videos and taking notes as instructed by his teacher. (Truth be told, he's always loved Crash Courses and introduced me to them a year ago.) Thanks for making education fun and, most importantly, concise!

Thanksgiving is based on the harvest of the crops. It occurs in the autumn because that is when you have had a whole year of (hopefully) successful harvest. If you waited until november in Canada to harvest your crops, they would be dead. Autumn is the harvest season, ours is shorter and occurs earlier thanks to our latitude with respect to most of the U.S. Therefore it makes sense to have it earlier.

MegaMentholMan HA!!! You just made my day. I gave you 5 different wars where Native Americans slaughtered colonists across 24 years and the best you can say to defend yourself is "you're racist." What a thought provoking and intelligent defense. You know, just because you don't like the fact that native americans slaughtered thousands of colonists across 5 different wars doesn't make me racist.
@MegaMentholMan
@MegaMentholMan 9 жыл бұрын
You conveniently cherry pick historical events without learning why and how they happened. You also take your information from biased sources. So, yes. You are racist to use such information to paint an entire race of people by only 5 acts over many years.
@domenik8339
@domenik8339 9 жыл бұрын
MegaMentholMan It was FIVE wars over 25 years!!! Five!!! All started by the native americans! There's no cherry picking to be done, those wars and the tobacco industry growing are the only part of american history in that time. They happened because evertime the americans sent a peace treaty the native americans attacked them AGAIN.

Let me begin by mentioning how good, useful, and fairly objective your videos are. I would like to commend your team on the achievement. I also had a question. Question: At the time that you mentioned the second Chesapeake Colony (Marlyland) you used two words: Proprietary and Land grant. So who is getting the money and whose is giving away land? I am not sure if I understand the land ownership structure yet. Thank you!

I live in Brazil, and I was studying about Brazil's colonization. So I searched it in English and found this video. My classmates always ask how I could be from the US and not know it's history (I came when I was 8), so thanks to you now I know exactly what to tell them.

You are aware that that phrase was on Woody Guthrie's guitar? I assume the reference is deliberate.

Great Pierre I know it was still inspired by some big music figure. Might've been Guthrie.
