Fun fact: the Quaker Oats company wasn't actually founded by or associated with the Quakers, but used their image to seem trustworthy and wholesome. Unfortunately, the logo causes a lot of people to confuse them with the Amish.

:) I am a Quaker. I also wear a lot of de-glow, neon, and insanely bright/patterned clothing. Often times when religion comes up, and I tell people I identify as a Quaker they become confused. "HOW are you wearing those mauve leather-trimmed booty-shorts?" they exclaim in shock. I tell them that I am not an oat container.

I read in my US History textbook that Georgia was founded as the protective buffer between the more important northern English colonies against the French in Louisiana and the Spanish in Florida, not South Carolina, as you mentioned
@IanPilgreen9 жыл бұрын
+Abhi-Wan Kenobi South and North Carolina were both massively rich colonies. Their success in rice cultivation through experienced slaves generated revenue that few other colonies could match. Georgia, which was the last Royal Colony, was basically a big colony of ex-cons that were there to growl at the unruly Natives and Spanish in Florida if they got to close to the cash flow of the English Carolinas.

And Albany New York was formerly called Beverwyck. Beverwijk is actually a small city in the Netherlands, Harlem is named after the Dutch City Haarlem.... and Brooklyn is named after the dutch town Breukelen. We have a lot in common my american friends.
@milascave29 жыл бұрын
+VeniVidiAjax Buswic, etc.
@Sjurm949 жыл бұрын
+VeniVidiAjax Beverwijck hasnot necessarily something to do with Beverwijk in Holland. In New Netherlands the colonists hunted on Beavers and they traded their fur. So hence the name Beverwijck (if you look to the NY City flag you can see Beavers). But the name Beverwijk in Holland comes from Bedevaartswijk;, meaning pilgrimage neighbourhood. Some other funny facts: - Brooklyns official motto is Eendraght maeckt maght (old Dutch for: in unity, there is strenght) - The English colonists noticed that most common Dutch names were Jan and Kees, so they called the dutch the Jan-Kezen = Yankees - Americans use the word cookie (koekje) instead of biscuit. And dollar comes from daler (old Dutch coin)
@danielbuendiagarcia57569 жыл бұрын
+Sjurm94 Dolar actually comes from the american revolution, that was mostly financed by spain (although no one recognises it). The spanish coin was composed of two columns, representing cape finisterre in Galicia, northwest Spain and Melilla in northern Africa. This two places were thought to be the end of the world until Columbus voyage. Between the columns there was a band with PLUS ULTRA written on it, which means further away. The band had an S shape making the coin look like the dollar we know now

I think the Dutch must be taught this in school? But it is not really true. After New Amsterdam became English, the Dutch kicked the English out of Suriname in the Dutch/Anglo War, and the English tried to give New Amsterdam back to the Dutch in the treaty negotiation in exchange for part of the sugar colonies, but the Dutch declined. So basically: The Dutch won Suriname from the English. The English offered New Amsterdam back to the Dutch. The Dutch declined. -John

@jhcfight11 жыл бұрын
***** They had a choice. Both parties had the same financial difficulties to this war, so it ended with this treaty.
@NiekGAE11 жыл бұрын
***** They did... The Dutch were a great naval power back then, not only with the Dutch East India Company but in general. Holland and Brittain fought plenty of wars over the years, and it wasn't as one-sided as you think. Though war with Brittain wasn't favourable, Dutch power wasn't as feeble back then that they'd give up a profitable colony without a fight. The British wanted to control North America, so they gave a fertile piece of land in South America with all the sugar and spices you could wish for in return for New Amsterdam, thus preventing war. Dumbest trade ever offcourse, but back then it seemed like a good deal.
@gunterke11 жыл бұрын
NiekGAE Well, the Dutch indeed were a naval great power back then but they much prefered their East Indian trade empire where they made insane amounts of money on spices like nutmeg. The West Indies weren't as lucrative. Compared to the English colonial posessions in the Americas, the Dutch couldn't compete locally (especially during the Third Anglo-Dutch war when also the French and a few German states declared war on the Dutch republic). By the time the English took over half of the Dutch colony spoke English, both north and south of the colony there were English colonies And in the Republic there hardly was any interest to migrate (there was enough profit to gain in old Amsterdam). North America was quickly sacrificed for the much more lucrative Caribbeans where they could have plantations and slaves...
@NiekGAE11 жыл бұрын
gunterke Oh yes, don't get me wrong the English definately had the upper hand in North America. I just think Job Heger's comment signalled he didn't know the Netherlands were ever a force to be reckoned with. By the way I looked around a bit and as it turns out, New Amsterdam was captured by the English at the start of the second Anglo-Dutch war. The Dutch then captured Suriname. In the third Anglo-Dutch war the Dutch reoccupied New York/New Amsterdam. After the wars, which the Dutch both won, they were allowed to keep New Amsterdam if the Dutch were allowed to keep Surinam and some other small island. So it wasn't the peacefull trade I had in mind after all. Funny, I knew about the Raid on the Medway and all (or Journey to Chatham as we Dutch call it, funny example of how opposite sides view history) but I never knew what changes that war made to the modern world.

Interesting fact. When the Dutch controlled Manhattan they also controlled 9 of the 10 islands (all in the pacific) where nutmeg could be grown. England controlled the other one. Wanting a monopoly on nutmeg (incredibly rare at the time and so a great commodity) the Dutch invaded the final Island and forced the English people out. The dutch comprehensively beat the English in a small battle (can't remember the details) as the islands were far away from Europe and the British were vastly outnumbered (by roughly 9 to 1). To prevent war the Dutch offered England compensation in the way of a much less valuable (at the time) island: Manhattan.
